Book - page 29 - C 1. T / 2. F / 3. F / 4. F / 5. T / 6. T Script: Fisk Teens Intermediate presents: Discover with Fisk Trips of a lifetime Memorable places. Amazing environments. Exciting things to do. Today we will take you on a trip to different parts of the USA. Places that are certainly important for Americans and interesting for tourists to visit. We will show you the most important aspects of each place and what you can see and do there. So, enjoy the trip that is about to begin! The first stop is in one of the most famous cities of the USA: New York. It is one of the largest cities in population in the world. The city receives a little more than 50 million visitors every year. To begin our trip in The Big Apple, let’s go to a very famous building in the city: the Empire State Building. It is 381 meters high and has 102 floors. Another important place to visit and maybe one of the most memorable sculptures in New York is the Statue of Liberty. The people of France gave it as a gift to the United States. The statue is a symbol of freedom. Finally, we go to Central Park. The largest urban park in the USA, it is probably the most famous park in the world. Besides having several lakes and beautiful bridges, it also has a zoo and a castle! This is definitely a place you should visit! Now, traveling through the USA we will visit a city famous for its theme parks. If you thought Orlando, you’re right! Walt Disney World Resort and the Universal Orlando Resort are located there. Let’s take a closer look at the parks. Walt Disney World Resort opened on October 1st, 1971. Now, it has four amazing theme parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom. There are also 2 water parks and more than 25 hotels. It is surely a place to visit. The Universal Orlando Resort is the second largest resort in Orlando. The resort has two theme parks: Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure, where you can visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Not a big fan of theme parks? How about shopping? Well, in Orlando there are outlet malls where you can find famous products at awesome prices. Entertainment, excitement and shopping, all in one place. Lights, camera, action! That’s what you’ll probably hear on a movie set, just like the ones in Hollywood, our next stop. Hollywood is in Los Angeles, California. It is an important location for the movie industry, and a place where a lot of celebrities live. A beautiful, but busy area. If you have a dream of becoming a star, this is the place to be. A famous place in Hollywood is the Walk of Fame, a sidewalk with the names of famous actors. There are more than 2,400 stars on the sidewalk!

13 13

Now we can’t go on without mentioning one of the most famous views, the Hollywood sign. A company created it in 1923 as an advertisement and never took it down. Today, the city takes care of this important sign. No visitor can get close to it anymore. Flying to the last city, we arrive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. An amazing city that has a lot to offer its visitors. Starting with one of the most beautiful places in the USA, the Great Lakes. Five huge lakes form the Great Lakes and they border the United States and Canada. Lake Michigan is the only lake totally inside the United States. Milwaukee is one of the cities on Lake Michigan. The lake in this area is very clean and appropriate for swimming. However, the water is very cold. Maybe too cold for some people. There are a lot of parks near the lake where people can walk or simply enjoy themselves. Another important place in Milwaukee is the Milwaukee Art Museum. The Museum has an original design and more than 25,000 works of art, attracting a large number of tourists to the city. Well, there is much, much more to see in the USA. Lots of beautiful and interesting places. Now you can plan your next trip and we really hope it will be a trip of a lifetime! Discover with Fisk TRIVIA 1. Andy: I thought you were friends. June: We were, when we were three! Phillip: Now all she does is annoy me and make me get into trouble. Vanessa: I have to disagree, Phillip. You are never nice to us. Andy: Really? Phillip: Oh, now that’s a lie! Simulator controller: Next, please! June: That would be us! Phillip: What? We were here first! Simulator controller: Sorry, boys. Only two at a time. Philip: See, Andy? They were here arguing with us just to cut in line. Those girls are really smarter than they look. Andy: Wow! They were smarter than us. Book - page 39 - D 1. Phillip should take it easy. 2. The boys rode on a driving simulator. 3. June's revenge was to put a hot dog on Phillip's car seat.

I helped my mom organize the house for the first three days, so I didn’t have time to get to know the neighborhood. Well, on Monday, my first day at school, I got up late, didn’t have breakfast and got lost on my way there. When I got to school, everyone was already inside the classroom. The principal took me to class and introduced me to the teacher and to the kids. That was really embarrassing. During lunch I sat by myself. I’m kind of shy, you know. At the end of the school day I was a little more relaxed, but still shy and alone. I don’t think anyone likes the first day at a new school. But this I know: nothing is bad for a long time. Things always get easier as time goes by.

Video Activity Book - page 53 - A The biggest advance in car racing is the simulators that Formula 1 is using nowadays. Engineers create machines to simulate situations that can train a pilot to deal with emergency situations. New race cars are able to give pilots a warning when something is wrong. Script: Fisk Teens Intermediate presents: Discover with Fisk Simulating Life Can you imagine yourself driving a very, very fast sports car? Well, imagine no more. Go to an arcade and play on a driving simulator! Simulators are machines that simulate any kind of real situation. There are many different types of simulators and today we are going to show you a few. There are simulators that are able to train people like airplane pilots. And there are video game simulators. Let’s start by showing what training simulators are. A person has to study hard and practice a lot to be able to fly an airplane. That’s why there are flight simulators: to train future pilots. They spend hours using the machine to practice every detail in the flight routine. Future pilots use the simulators for training for emergency situations. An advantage is that simulators are cheaper compared to flying a real airplane. The biggest advance in flight simulation came with the video game for computers in the 1980’s. It began as entertainment, but soon became a useful tool for private pilots that started to practice at home. The driving simulator is another kind of simulator that is very popular among people that like arcades and among vehicle professionals. Getting in a car simulator and driving like you are in a real car is really a great experience. Entertainment, research and special training are the main reasons for using driving simulators. Important medical companies use simulators to test how a person reacts to a certain medicine while driving. Training professional pilots is also an important aspect of driving simulators. Formula 1 teams normally design a new car as a simulator before they build the real car. New technology helps us in many ways, but maybe the one that we like the most is when there are new games for our entertainment. Video games have been part of our lives and when they simulate a reality, they make playing a game an awesome adventure. Almost every big amusement park has a ride simulator, and it is a success. Movements up and down, side to side, wind on their faces, 3D visuals and many more effects all work together to simulate some kind of adventure. Sometimes the simulation is so real that many people feel sick. That’s why it is really important to read the instructions and warnings before you play on one of these. And, please wait at least 2 hours after you have eaten. Home video games are also advancing. Have you ever played a video game without the controllers? Well, that is possible! All you have to do is stand in front of the TV, a machine will identify you and you can start playing. You jump, move side to side and run in place. You and your friends can play beach volleyball or go rafting. Awesome fun without leaving home! The future of video games is exciting. Advanced technology allows players to feel like they are inside the game, just like a simulator, but without the machine. Some years ago people would say that it was impossible to interact with a TV, that it was impossible to play golf or soccer in your living room. But it is possible. Simulating life is fascinating. It lets people get into situations they might not have had the chance to live in real life. Besides that, simulating helps people become better professionals and makes our world a better and safer place to live in. Discover with Fisk

Script: Fisk Teens Intermediate presents: Discover with Fisk Hawaiian luaus Aloha, friends! Let’s visit the beautiful state of Hawaii and learn more about its most famous party: the luau. Hawaii is the newest of the 50 states of the USA. Eight main islands form the state of Hawaii. This American state is famous for its beautiful beaches and surfing. It is also the most isolated population center on earth. The capital city is Honolulu. It is the largest and most important city in the state. There is a lot to do and see on the island. You can visit beaches, mountains and the Pearl Harbor Memorial. When talking about Hawaii, maybe one of the first things that comes to mind is the luaus. So we can’t go on without learning how this tradition started. In the early days of Hawaii, men and women couldn’t eat their meals in the same place nor eat certain kinds of food. However, this changed in 1819 when King Kamehameha II decided to end this tradition. He ordered his people to prepare a huge feast and he sat next to men and women. Together they ate a delicious meal, breaking the old tradition and creating a new one: the luau. The first luaus were huge feasts and the host would invite a lot of people. The decorations were beautiful, with plants and flowers. The host would arrange the food on the floor where everyone would sit and eat typical Hawaiian dishes with their hands. Luaus today aren’t as big as those in the past, but they continue to be fun, with lots of eating, singing and dancing. Maybe the biggest difference is that people don’t have to eat on the floor or with their hands anymore.

39 39

In Hawaii, luaus are a traditional way to celebrate a baby’s first birthday and a lot of other celebrations. Three things are important when organizing a luau: typical food, Hawaiian music and tropical decorations. There are a lot of typical Hawaiian dishes, but the ones that are always present in luaus are pork, poi, chicken and coconut. Probably the most important moment of a luau is when the Hawaiians present the main and most famous dish to the guests: the pig coming out of the imu. You might be asking yourself, what is an imu? Let me explain. An imu is an oven in the ground where it cooks the pig for 6 to 8 hours. The moment of taking the pig out of the imu is special. The guests stand around the hole and observe the ritual. A luau in Hawaii would not be complete without a pig cooked in an imu. Another typical Hawaiian luau dish is poi. Poi is part of a plant and looks like a potato. The curious part is that Hawaiians classify poi according to how many fingers you need to eat it! One, two or three fingers. There are also a lot of different drinks at luaus. From fruit juice to alcoholic drinks. People decorate every glass with flowers, a piece of pineapple or little paper umbrellas. You can also drink them straight from the pineapple or coconut. Very tropical, isn’t it? At luaus, it is very common to see people wearing flowered shirts, dresses and shorts. Hawaiian women usually wear the typical hula skirts. However, the one thing that no luau can be without is the flower necklace. The necklace of fresh flowers has a name: lei. Every person at a luau should wear one. It is the symbol of friendship and when people see one, they immediately think of Hawaii. Anyone can wear a lei. A very common use for leis is greeting visitors entering Hawaii. It is a way to tell each visitor that he or she is very welcome on the island. There aren’t any rules for wearing a lei, but one thing no one should do: refuse to put on a lei. It is also very rude to take off a lei immediately after someone gives you one. Now what is a party without music and dancing? Well, a luau definitely has both! Hawaiian music and the hula dance are very famous. Hula dancers make movements with their hands and bodies often imitating the ocean, trees or even animals. It is a very beautiful dance that shows respect for nature and for the gods. Hawaiian luaus normally happen at the end of the day on the beach or close to it. A lot of people believe the sunset is a way nature has to be part of the luau. So when night falls, people light torches and make bonfires. Friendship and happy feelings are the special ingredients of the night. People seem to forget their problems and are calm, relaxed and simply happy. And the good thing is that you don’t have to go to Hawaii to have a luau. It’s not hard to organize one. You can adapt some recipes, drinks and songs. Just be creative. Invite some friends and have a great time. Aloha in the Hawaiian language means hello and goodbye, but it also means peace. A great way to celebrate the good things in life! Aloha, friends! Discover with Fisk TRIVIA 1. How many main islands are there in Hawaii? (Eight.) 2. What is the capital city of Hawaii? Script: Fisk Teens Intermediate presents: Discover with Fisk Top 5 worst types of people Have you ever had trouble with someone at school? Do you know anyone that has? Perhaps the worst thing about society is people with terrible behavior. People that don’t really respect others and that, in the end, are the ones that need help. Thinking about the types of people we find at schools, we ranked the top 5 worst of them. Number 5 on our list is the gossip. A person that enjoys talking about people behind their backs. This person spreads rumors and often invents things. A gossip is always observing other people and finding things to say about them. But why does a person gossip? Generally, a gossip is a person that is jealous of someone and doesn’t have the courage to face this person. Many times, a gossip feels that he or she isn’t as good as someone, so he or she invents stories to make this person look bad. Even a simple comment can create chaos and end up hurting someone. So, how do you deal with a gossip? If the rumor is about you, try to talk to the gossip. Tell him or her how you feel and make it clear that you don’t like it and that it is wrong. Show this person how strong and confident you are. Now, if you hear a rumor, just don’t spread it. Coming in fourth place on our list is the cheater. This person likes to cheat on tests, during competitions and even on the simplest things, like cutting in line. A cheater likes to break rules to take advantage of a situation. He or she can cheat in a lot of different ways. Cheating on tests is one of the most common, but when a person pretends something is his or hers when it isn’t, it is also a way of cheating. That happens when someone copies things from the Internet and says that he or she wrote them, or when someone takes an idea from another person and says it was his or her idea. A cheater is just an insecure person. When a person understands that he or she is able to do something and doesn’t have to break any rules to do it, cheating becomes useless and silly. Number 3 on our list is the liar. Lying is one of the most terrible things a person can do because it destroys any trust between people. A lot of liars have serious confidence problems. They don’t really believe in their qualities and tend to make things up in order to seem to be a smarter and better person or to make another person look bad. Liars and gossips are similar, but the difference is that a liar doesn’t always talk about another person. He or she will frequently tell a lie to have some kind of advantage or to try to get out of trouble. What a liar doesn’t understand is that when he or she lies a lot, and people find out about these lies, no one will ever trust him or her again. Liars normally get hurt by themselves and they end up having no friends. The troublemaker comes in second place. This type of person is always getting into trouble and a lot of times putting the blame on others. Troublemakers get into different kinds of trouble at school, at home and in their neighborhoods. They break and vandalize things. Their behavior is far from being nice and polite. They often get into fights and arguments. They simply don’t respect people or places. In the classroom they fool around, talk too much, ignore the lesson and disturb everyone there. They won’t obey the teachers and they don’t respect other students. They do all the things students mustn’t do at school. At home or in their neighborhoods they run wild looking for something mischievous to do. Troublemakers have no sense of responsibility. They make people get angry and stressed out. They think they are having the time of their lives. But actually it’s sad because something is really wrong with them. There is not much you can do to help troublemakers. These people need professional help. So stay away from them. And number 1 on our list, the worst type of person ever: the bully. Why? Simply because this person is a gossip, a cheater, a liar and a troublemaker all in one.

52 52

There seems to be a bully everywhere we go. At school, at the park and even in our neighborhood. These types of people enjoy making other people’s lives hard. Bullies make other people feel hurt, afraid or uncomfortable, and they repeat these actions again and again for a long period of time. Bullies do that because they want to feel they are better than everyone else feeling stronger and more popular. That way they get attention from other kids and even adults. There are basically three types of bullying: physical – like pulling or hitting, verbal – like name-calling and insulting, and relationship bullying – spreading rumors or refusing to talk to someone. There is also cyber bullying - bullying on the computer, especially through social networking sites. Bullies get into trouble, lie and cheat. They don’t respect other people’s feelings. They don’t care about anybody but themselves. The truth is that these bullies are having some kind of problem. It is safe to say that they need more help than the person they attack. A lot of bullies need professional help because they can’t really help themselves. So, how do you deal with bullies? Well, try to avoid them the best you can. Talk to an adult and never plan revenge, especially a physical one. Stand tall, hold your head up and be confident. You’re not the one with problems, the bullies are.
