Introduction To Strike, Dip & Dip Direction
Engr. Sultan Ahmed Khoso
Introduction • Strike, dip & dip direction, refer to the orientation or attitude of a geologic feature, mainly used
during the geological mapping of an area.
• Strike is the direction of a line produced by the intersection of an imaginary horizontal plane with an inclined bed. When two planes intersect a line is formed. If one plane is the inclined rock layer and
the other is a horizontal plane, representing the surface of the Earth the direction of, a line formed by their intersection is called the strike of that unit or that feature. • Dip is the angle between the imaginary horizontal plane and the inclined bed, measured in a plane
oriented at 90 degree to the strike line. The dip is the maximum angle of inclination of an inclined plane and is measured perpendicular to the strike.

Definition of Strike, dip & Dip Direction
Fundamentals of Strike and Dip • Symbols that come upon when studying maps are shown as under: -The longer line of the symbol represents the strike of the feature on the maps ,
-The shorter mark indicates the direction of dip on the maps. - BOTH ARE PERPENDICULAR TO EACH OTHER, - And the small number next to the arrow is the value of the angle of dip
Fundamentals of Strike and Dip • The angle of strike can be ANY value between 0° and 360°, and • The angle of dip can be any value between 0 and 90o
Case Study Example : If Rock layer is oriented at 330° from North to West (i.e. N330oW) and tilted by 10° from North towards East (N10oE), What will be the Orientation of Rock Bed in Geological Map.
