Reading

Before Reading

A. Look at the pictures. Do you ever use a watch? Why do you think this watch is Martha’s favorite thing?

Reading Strategy: Read for the main idea • The main idea is the central purpose of every text. Supporting details can help you find the main idea of an article. • Try to understand the most important ideas first. • Check new and unfamiliar words later.

B. Read the text. Underline supporting details to help you find the main idea. My Favorite Thing I’m Martha. This watch is the most important thing I have. It’s my favorite birthday present from my grandfather. It’s his old watch, and the date on the back, is 1953! It’s very old. It’s also very big because it’s a man’s watch, but that’s OK. Every time I look at it, I remember my grandfather. He is very clever and kind.  I really like old things. Of course I have new things too! I use my tablet every day, but I don’t think I can give it to my child one day. That’s why the watch is special. Some of my friends say we don’t need watches any more because we can check the time on our phones. But I think watches are beautiful.

After Reading C. Answer the questions. 1. Who is Martha’s favorite thing from? 2. What year is on the watch? 3. What is the problem with the watch? 4. What does Martha say about her grandfather? 5. How often does she use her tablet? 6. Why does Martha like watches? Give two reasons.

PROFESSIONAL ZONE Strategies:

Reading and Writing

• Read an informational text • Use vocabulary in context • Use capital letters • Write short sentences

Is a career in agriculture right for you? Agriculture is the science and practice of farming. Farmers grow and sell plants or food crops. Agricultural scientists study better ways to grow crops. Farmers need business skills to run their farms and sell their products. They also need to understand farming methods that will help them produce the best harvests. Farmers can learn

from experience, but many of them have college degrees in business or agriculture. Agricultural scientists have college degrees. They study plants and soil to improve farming methods and keep crops safe. For example, they find ways to control harmful pests and weeds and to improve water and soil conditions.

Watering Bonsai A. listen to the audio and fill in the missing words. listen again to check your answers. Bonsai is the (1) _______________ art of creating miniature or very small trees. Bonsai are fragile and need special care. The watering schedule is very important because the (2) _______________ must never become completely dry. Bonsai usually need to be watered once a day during summer months when the sun is strong. They need less water in the fall, about two or three times per week. During winter, they only need to be watered about once every two weeks or so. Another important factor is (3) _______________ does the watering. The amount of water a bonsai needs depends on the soil and the size of the pot. It helps to have only one person water the bonsai.

This person is in a better position to understand the water level of the soil and how much water the tree needs each time.

B. Choose the correct answers. 1. Which detail tells why bonsai trees need less water in the fall than in the summer? a. In the fall, the soil does not dry up quickly. b. In the summer, bonsai trees are more fragile. c. The sun is stronger in the summer. d. The soil dries up quickly in the fall.

2. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? a. The bonsai is fragile and needs special care. b. The amount of water depends on the type of soil. c. It is best to have the same person care for the bonsai. d. The amount of water depends on the size of the pot.

C. Work with a partner or in a group. Discuss what you would like or dislike about a career in agriculture.
