Strength in numbers Reliable EMD* power assemblies

We know power assemblies. We’ve produced tens of thousands of them, providing years of dependable service. Our power assemblies for EMD 645 and 710 engines are built for the toughest applications possible―designed with finite element analysis and solid modeling to eliminate defects and validated through extensive life, endurance, and reliability stress testing. Our one-piece liner matches the OEM’s design for airflow characteristics while preventing water leaks and improving cooling.

Patented One-Piece Liners Our one-piece liners feature a proprietary design that removes the possibility of water leaks through the external water jacket and improves water flow for better cooling. These liners offer greater rigidity and durability and are available with a hardened upper bore (HUB) or a standard, plateau-honed or chromed bore.

Power Assemblies from GE for EMD* 645 and 710 engines High-Strength Cylinder Heads Class 50 iron alloy, hardened valve guides and the elimination of core plugs make our cylinder heads the most durable on the market, delivering maximum performance and cooling efficiency. Every head is tested for water integrity and clean passages.

Long-Life Pistons GE’s pistons are alloy cast iron for high strength and our laser-hardened ring lands exhibit superior wear rates. For easy break-in, we apply tin or phosphate coating.

Durable Rods, Carriers & Pins We use premium-quality steel and proprietary forging and hardening processes to produce long-lasting connecting rods, carriers and piston pins.

Six Sigma manufacturing in a dedicated facility We produce new and remanufactured power assemblies using state-of-the-art equipment, tooling and processes, developed and refined according to Six Sigma quality standards. Manufacturing takes place in our Latham, New York, facility, which is designed and equipped for efficient, repeatable production of EMD-compatible components. The facility is certified to ISO 9001 and AAR M-1003 standards.

Proven performance from the #1 EMD* reman turbo supplier GE remanufactures more turbochargers for EMD 645 and 710 engines than any other manufacturer in the world. By remanufacture, we mean in full. It’s never a basic rebuild. It’s a total reman. Our process includes thorough parts inspection, repair and replacement as needed, alignment and doweling. We also test every single unit for mechanical performance and vibration characteristics.

Our remanufactured turbochargers feature: • Inconel turbine blades for high temperature resistance • Computer-matched compressor diffusers with nozzle rings • 100% new bearings, gaskets and hardware in every unit • Modified D-ring seal between the main housing and compressor bearing support to reduce potential pinched seals • An external clutch option for both 710 and 645 turbochargers

Better engine rebuilding starts with a better engine building

We’ve dedicated significant resources to our goal of performing the highest quality EMD* engine rebuilds. We’ve dedicated an entire building―760,000 square feet of efficient workflow design, state-of-the-art equipment and advanced tooling. To that, we’ve added an expertly trained team of craftspeople who follow a rigorous 14-step engine rebuild program―involving nearly 250 detailed process instructions and including 18 quality checkpoints and extensive testing of every engine. As a result, when you choose GE to rebuild your EMD 645 and 710 engines, you get exceptional product reliability and fast turnaround.

From A Customer Perspective “Over the past two years, Helm Financial has performed three quality audits at GE’s San Luis Potosi engine rebuild plant. The improvements and investments made by GE in this facility definitely show the company’s commitment to producing a quality product that exceeds customer expectation. Changes have been made on several fronts, where customer feedback, internal processes, vendors and field experience have been documented and acted upon to achieve maximum benefits. GE’s engineering team with EMD experience is a valuable addition to any customer’s purchases. Expedient response and expertise provides ‘peace of mind.’” Francois Bernard, Vice President Helm Financial Corp.

EMD* 645 and 710 engine rebuilds by GE Accuracy to within thousandths of an inch We use the latest CNC machining technologies in our EMD rebuild facility. Parts precision and strict line bore process control increases reliability. A major Class I railroad recently cited our advanced CNC machining capabilities as among its key factors in giving our EMD engine rebuild program a 98% supplier rating. The railroad noted the capabilities as evidence of GE’s commitment to quality and service over the long term.

Eight hours or more of multifunctional testing Before it leaves our shop, every EMD engine we rebuild undergoes at least eight hours of break-in, load and emissions testing in one of our two advanced test cells. We assess temperatures, pressures, leaks, total horsepower, vibration, fuel consumption, engine protection, over speed and fluids quality. We also test for a full range of emissions―NOx, particulate matter, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons―including a full hour of testing at Notch 8 to validate compliance with EPA requirements.

In addition to providing advanced machining and testing capabilities, we’ve undertaken a wide range of quality initiatives and engine line improvements designed to further enhance our EMD engine remanufacturing services. Our EMD engine rebuild facility is certified to ISO 9001 and AAR M-1003 standards.
