Other targeted areas of this course include:      

It is important to note that, while we are not using the same materials, this course meets the Michigan Merit Curriculum Essential Questions, Standards, and Benchmarks designated for the eleventh grade curriculum (http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/English_Grade_11_181576_7.pdf). Literature will be analyzed using the overarching theme of “Transformational Thinking.” The emphasis will be on decision making, idea development, and problem solving. Course Expectations: We will be covering copious amounts of material; therefore, it is imperative that we have a smooth-running, efficient classroom. In order to ensure a learning environment in which everyone can learn, there are some rules that everyone must follow. 

Be prepared. Everyday you will need to bring the following materials:  3-ring binder with dividers  Vocabulary  Handouts  Assignments  Journals  SAT Prep  Miscellaneous information  Paper, blue or black pen or pencil, and highlighter(s)  Assignments/Handouts

Be   

conscientious. Commit yourself to being prepared for each class. Care about what you do in class – take pride in your work and responsibility for your learning. Pay attention to lectures and directions. If you have questions, ask. This will alleviate any confusion or misunderstanding later.  Use the time you are give wisely.  Speak and behave in a manner that is appropriate to a learning environment.

Be in class. Attendance in class is essential to your learning.  Tardiness will not be tolerated. Your fourth and eighth tardies will result in detentions. Your eleventh tardy will result in loss of credit.  You should be in your assigned seat when the bell rings, not entering the classroom; this will result in a tardy.  Returning to lockers to retrieve forgotten materials will also result in a tardy. 

USE LANGUAGE THAT IS SCHOOL APPROPRIATE! My classroom is a place of respect; I will NOT tolerate swearing, teasing, or any inappropriate interactions.

Absences are expected but should be kept to a minimum. You are allowed ten (10) absences – excused or unexcused – per semester. The eleventh absence results in loss of credit.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to make it up. You will be given as many days as you were absent to make up the work you missed. Do not complete this work during our class time; it is homework.  If you are absent for a test or quiz, you have one week to schedule a make-up. If you do not show up for the make-up test/quiz at the agreed upon time without advance notice, your grade will be reduced by 50%. If you do not show up a second time, you will receive a zero. If you have not made up the test/quiz within the allotted time, you will receive a zero.  If have an excused absence on the day that a long-term assignment is due, you must turn it in on the day that you return.  If you are absent for a film, it is up to you to make arrangements to watch it. Many assignments and assessments contain information (or require you to use information) from the film. It will be crucial for you to make this work up as soon as possible.  Skipping is not tolerated. You will not be allowed to make up work you missed, nor will you be allowed to turn in work that was due. All unexcused absences will be considered skipping.  You will be marked absent if you leave the room for more than six (6) minutes.

Pay attention to due dates. All assignments must be turned in when they are due.  Homework: due at the beginning of the hour  Classwork: due at the end of the hour  Assignments for unexcused absences will not be accepted for credit.  Late assignments will not be accepted for credit.  Computer/printer problems are not an excuse for missing an assignment.  Things that may adversely your grade on assignments:  Copying  Sleeping  Doing work for other classes  Writing notes  Unexcused absences  Using your phone  Sending or receiving text messages

MEDICAL ENGLISH 11:

EXPECTATIONS

The following expectations are basic to classroom behavior and ethics. Since this is a fast-paced class, please know that you may be asked to leave the program if you choose not to meet these expectations.

1. Commitment I am willing to complete all of the assigned work thoroughly, be cooperative, have good attendance, and be organized.

2. Preparedness I will be prepared for class every day. Preparation will be measured by such behaviors as having materials for class, having completed assignments on time, participating in class discussions, and appropriately demonstrating that learning has taken place.

3. Work I will work hard every day to achieve success in this class. My work ethic will be demonstrated in my attitude, my attendance, and my efforts to complete each task in a thorough and timely manner.

4. Discipline I will behave respectfully toward my teacher and peers. I will observe all classroom and school policies.

5. Honesty I know that I alone am responsible for my work and that cheating is never an appropriate way to accomplish my goals. Cheating destroys trust and does not reflect true learning; therefore, I will never knowingly engage in any act of academic dishonesty.
