Sewing and embroidery These Christmas ornaments are embroidered and stitched together with embroidery floss. In case you´re not familiar with one of the stitches, you can practice the stitches a few times on a felt scraps before working on a ornament. None of the stitches are difficult, but can take some practice to get perfect. Always keep your stitches and the space between them the same length. Be consistent with your sewing tension. Or, if you want to keep embroidery to a minimum, you can sometimes glue on certain elements, instead of embroidering them. You can experiment and use your imagination to customize the project. These illustrations will help you with any unfamiliar stitches.

Working direction

1. Appliqué Stitch: Stitching a felt piece onto a felt surface. Place the appliqué on the background felt. Make tiny stitches perpendicular to the edge of the appliqué. 2. Overcast Stitch: Simple stitch over the edge of the felt. Also called whip-stitch, is used to attach two pieces of felt. This isn´t a decorative stitch, so always use floss that matches the colour of the felt and make the stitches small and neat. 3. Straight Stitch: Use a simple straight stitch to create a motif. 4. Satin Stitch: The satin stitch is composed of parallel rows of straight stitch and is often used to fill in an area with floss. The make very nice eyes and noses on softies. These illustrations will help you with any unfamiliar stitches. 5. Blanket stitch: The blanket stitch is both decorative and functional. Use this stitch to accentuate an edge or to attach an appliqué. 6. Back Stitch: This simple stitch creates a solid line so it´s great for outlining shapes or creating text. A backstitch gets its name because you create it moving the needle a stitch backward before moving it forward to create the next stitch. 2

1. Use the templates (see page 11) to cut two bulb shapes from the blue felt and two topper shapes from light grey felt, cutting along the bottom with pinking shears, as indicated.

2. Sew the light grey ornament topper to the bulb front by creating straight stitches that

correspond with the zigzag you cut with the pinking shears. Repeat this process for the bulb back.

3. Carefully, make two tiny holes with the tip of a very sharp pair of embroidery scissors. 4. Insert safety eyes and connectors at back. 5. Embroider the face. Thread an embroidery needle with two strands of black

embroidery floss and embroider the face onto the bulb piece, checking against the picture to get the placement right. The eyelashes are made using a small straight stitch for each eye. Make eyebrows by sewing two tiny straight stitches for each one and placing at a slight angle. Embroider a small, curved mouth with a few back stitches.

6. Align the two head pieces together, right sides out. Thread an embroidery needle with

one strand of floss (using floss that matches the colour of the felt) and sew the pieces together with a small overcast stitch. Leave a gap and fill it with toy stuffing. When the padding is distributed, overcast stitch the gap closed.

7. Paint the cheeks using artist pastels. Rub the pastel on a piece of paper and then apply the resulting powder with a soft brush.

You can make different lights to create a garland, changing color and face expression. There are many nice ways to embroider eyes and mouth using safety eyes, back stitch and straight stitches. Just try out what you like best! 4

String together simple felt balls and the lights to create this Christmas garland. Make a loop and tie a knot at one end of the baker twine. Measure 6 inches from the loop and tie a knot. With the large darning needle, stitch through the top of the felt ball with the barker´s twine. Tie a knot at the other end of the ball. Measure 2 inches from this knot and tie another one. Repeat this process until you have added all balls and bulbs to the barker twine. Tie a hanging loop at end of the garland. These lights also make lovely single ornaments. Simple add a hanging loop at the top of each light. With the large darning needle, stitch through the top of the bulb with the barker´s twine. Pull the ends of the twine up, and knot the tails to create a hanger.

Materials: . Green felt (4”x7.1”) . Scraps of red, brown and flesh tone felt. . Embroidery needle. . Embroidery floss. . Pipe cleaner. . Star button.

. Scissors. . Artist pastels (pink and red). . Toy stuffing . Baker twine. . Decorative beads . . Red ribbon.

1. Print the pattern pieces on page 12 onto paper and cut out to make templates. This

ornament has a lot of separate pieces: cut two tree pieces from green felt. Cut two legs from brown felt. Cut a gift piece from red felt and cut two arms pieces from flesh tone felt. Finally cut one piece from flesh tone felt for the face.

2. Fold the legs shapes in half. Thread an embroidery needle with one strand of brown floss and overcast stitch around the edges using small stitches, leaving the top open. Use pliers or an old scissors (don´t use good scissors to cut wire, it will ruin them) to cut a pipe cleaner 3.2” long. Fold the pipe cleaner in half. Using the picture as a guide, push the legs onto the pipe cleaner.

3. Carefully position the hair at the top of the face piece. Adjust the hair so that it´s centered correctly and pin in place. Sew the hairline onto the face using tiny running stitch.

4. Referring to the illustration, place the tree front onto the face as shown. Attach the tree

to the face with appliqué stitches worked with one strand of green floss. Keep the stitches small so you´ll barely see them when you´re finished. 5. Embroider the face. Thread an embroidery needle with two strands of brown embroidery floss and sew the eyes using three curving backstitches. Make the eyebrows by sewing two tiny straight stitches for each one and placing at a slight angle. Embroider a small, curved mouth with red floss and a few back stitches.

6. Use a little craft glue to stick the gift piece onto the tree shape and sew it on, using one strand of red floss.

7. Use a tiny dot of craft glue to stick the arms shapes in position. Thread an embroidery

needle with one strand of flesh tome embroidery floss and sew around the arms with a small, neat appliqué stitch.

8.

Thread a beading needle with one strand of green floss and sew on the beads for decoration. Randomly, cover the tree and the tree back with beads. Sew the button star at the top.

9. Pin or glue the legs in place on the body shape, using a pin or a small quantity of craft

glue.

10. Align the two tree pieces together, right sides out. Thread an embroidery needle with

one strand of green floss and sew the pieces together with a blanket stitch. Leave a gap and fill it with toy stuffing. When the padding is distributed, blanket stitch the gap closed.

11. Add a bit of color to it cheeks using an artist pastel or powder blush. Sew on the bow in place.
