2

Fold the flaps on the ends of the three card strips so they are going in opposite directions. Attach the card strips evenly across the top opening of the box. Cut the acetate into 0.5cm strips.

3

Attach the figures and sentiment to the top of acetate strips. Attach to the card strips at slight angles, as shown, so they appear to explode out of the box. Finish with gems, ribbon, a bow and a jingle bell. cardmakingandpapercraft.com

WIN FAB PRIZES!

Feathered friends I made these penguin cards using the template from issue 170 of Quick Cards – they were so fun to make! I used First Edition Black Out papers for the body of the penguins and washi tape for the headband. I added gems and a bow for an Art Deco look. The feathers were cut in black and white card from a set of First Edition dies called Birds. The scarf was cut from Trimcraft Baby Steps paper and the eyes are die-cut circles with small googly eyes in the centre. I really love the Shape Up templates in each month’s issue. They were the deciding factor when it came to renewing my subscription to the magazine. May Jones, Lincoln Hayley: Wow, you’ve made two beautiful penguin cards, May! It’s great to hear you love our Shape Up feature – why don’t you try your hand at mittenshaped cards on page 47?

Magical steps This is my first attempt at a step panel card, which I made using the instructions in issue 168. I am always on the lookout for new card shapes to try out and so I love the Card School feature in every issue of Quick Cards. I used Trimcraft’s Magic of Christmas paper collection to decorate my card. I love the way the panel card shape shows off all the different papers. I’ll definitely be making more of these cards with other papers in my craft stash. Cathy Clowes, Street Hayley: You’ve done a fantastic job with the step panel card, Cathy!

May used issue 170’s penguin Shape Up template to create these cute, googlyeyed critters!

Four-legged friend Here is a card I made using the pug card feature in issue 167. I needed to make a card for a family who own a Rottweiler, so I thought the pug card would be perfect to adapt! I love all the designs in your Shape Up features, please keep it up. Thanks for a great magazine! Adele Floyd, Maine, USA

Charity make While I was in hospital, my son bought me a card making kit, and I was instantly hooked! After making cards for the nurses, I decided to make fundraising ones – usually for cancer or military charities (I met my late husband while serving in the army). Here is one of the pink ribbon cards I’ve recently made. I love making cards and learning new techniques – your magazine is great for new ideas. Margrit Forrester, Wolverhampton Hayley: I’m glad to hear our magazine inspires your charity cards, Margrit!

Fine vintage Here is a birthday card I made for my crafty friend. She introduced me to découpage, so I used the technique on her card! She lived in France and loves wine and cheese, so the ‘A Fine Vintage’ sentiment is perfect. I also added strips to hold the voucher I bought her. Hopefully she’ll like the card as much as I enjoyed making it! Tan Wui Wui, Singapore

Wui Wui’s découpage card looks good enough to eat!

My favourite animals to create cards with are hedgehogs and foxes, so I was delighted to see the Hattie Hedgehog stamp that came free with issue 168 of Quick Cards. I decided to make a simple card with subtle colours so that all of Hattie’s cuteness stood out! I added some Glossy Accents on the flowers to give it a little shine. Janice Schulz, Ohio, USA Hayley: You’ve done a lovely job with the inking, Janice! cardmakingandpapercraft.com

Here is a card I made for my husband for our golden wedding anniversary, which was last year on the 13th of August. I made the little die-cut book in the centre of the card to look like the ‘This is your Life’ book. This card is very special to me as my husband sadly passed away suddenly at the end of May this year, but I am gradually starting to begin to craft again after losing him. I love your magazine and have been reading it since the very first issue. Shirley Clarke, Bury St Edmunds Hayley: I’m so sorry to hear of your loss, Shirley. Your anniversary card is so thoughtful – what a very special memento to have.

Hayley: Your découpage skills are first-rate, Wui Wui – what a thoughtful gift!

Just for you

Ann used issue 169’s cover gift to make these cute Christmas teddy cards

Your magazine is wonderful! I live in the US, and came across Quick Cards in a craft store here. The articles, tips and letters are great, and the step-by-step instructions for making the cards featured are very helpful. I also love the free gifts you include with each issue. While travelling in the UK this summer, I was delighted to find issue 165. Here is the card I made with the free stamp and papers, which I wanted to share with you. Donna Rae Grove, Donna’s South Carolina, USA couture card made great use of issue 165’s cover gift

Special sister

Hayley: If you like trying new card folds Kathryn, turn to page 29 for U-fold cards!

I loved the free gifts in issue 169 of Quick Cards – here are two cards I made using them. I was inspired by one of your features which joined two different patterned papers together. I thought I would join all four of the papers together in a square, matting them on red card and covering the joins with pretty ribbons, which I then topped with the bear and red foil card. I coloured the bear and the poinsettias with watercolours. Thank you again for such a lovely cover gift. Ann Curtis, Cambridge Hayley: You’ve certainly been busy, Ann! Your teddy bear cards are beautiful.

Hayley: Your dressmaker card looks so chic, Donna!

I made this step panel card for my sister, as I wanted to make a different style of card for her special day. I used papers from my own craft stash and a variety of stamps and dies to create the cloudy sky background. I finished the card with a scalloped yellow circle and a bird stamp. Thank you very much for the inspiration. Kathryn Ween, Australia

Add hearts punched from metallic gold card to each corner and use a hot glue gun to add a ribbon bow to the top of the image panel. Die cut a circle of white card and add a sentiment from the Peace on Earth transfer pack. Foil with matt gold foil and mount onto a scalloped circle, cut from gold metallic card. Punch a hole in the top of the sentiment tag and tie to the ribbon bow using metallic cord to finish.

Mount a 13.5cm square of green striped digi paper onto a 14cm square of kraft card. Add to the front of a 14.5cm square card base. Cut a 10.5cm square of kraft card and a 10.5cm square from the full background sheet of the O’ Christmas Tree transfer pack. Place the background carrier sheet onto the kraft card and use the lollipop stick to transfer the glue onto the card. Lay the green foil on top, rub in place initially with your finger and then cover with the backing sheet and finish off with the lollipop stick.

Remove the foil swiftly and add the foiled panel to the card front. Use a large circle die to cut a circle from green striped paper. Foil onto this a Christmas tree from the O’ Christmas Tree transfer pack and then a sentiment from the same transfer pack foiled with matt gold foil. Layer the circle onto a scalloped circle die cut from gold card and add to the card front using foam pads. Add a wooden heart button to the foiled panel, then wrap a length of green ribbon around the top of the card, tying into a bow to finish.

fixes GOT A QUESTION?

Stuck for ideas, or having trouble mastering a new technique? Our team of experts is always happy to help! SARAH JACKMAN READ Creative card designer and keen crafter

My daughter was showing me her silver crackle effect nails, and I was wondering if there were any products that could replicate this as I really love the effect? Pat Hickman, Coventry Becky: I love the crackle effect and once you have mastered this technique you can use it on various projects. You’ll need Artiste Crackle medium (available from www.docrafts. com), sturdy cardstock and acrylic paints. Cover the card with your preferred base colour (this will show through the crackle). Once dried, apply a layer of the crackle medium brushing all strokes in the same direction. Leave to dry, then apply a single layer of your chosen top shade, this time with your brush strokes at right angles to those used for the medium. As the paint dries, it’ll crackle and your base colour will begin to appear.

Shaker fun

Your gift

My two nieces have become really interested in card making, and I was wondering if you could suggest a fun project for us to all make together? Cathy McDonald, St Andrews Sarah: I have the perfect project for your nieces to enjoy – a classic shaker card! You can use any spare figures and sentiments that you have left from this month’s Frosty Friends pop-up box card kit. Let your nieces choose a figure and a sentiment and mix with papers and cardstock from your stash. Attach the cardstock to the card front, then die cut a circle through the front paper layer. Glue acetate behind the aperture and attach foam tape around it. Layer a contrasting paper on silver mirri board and attach a figure in the centre. Punch out snowflakes from silver paper and add to the aperture, with some glitter. Remove the backing from the foam tape and attach on top to create the shaker element. Finish with gems and a sentiment.

My mum loves flowers, and I was thinking of creating a floral-themed Christmas card for her. Could you recommend some paper flowers I could use? Jennifer Priestley, Portsmouth Vicky: That sounds really thoughtful, Jennifer. Hobbycraft’s Heritage Christmas range is lovely; it includes packs of red and gold poinsettias (see www.hobbycraft.co.uk). The Little Birdie Festive Floral Fiesta kit from Merly Impressions is another option. It is an embellishment kit with various flowers and foliage, which you could create a centrepiece with. Or, you could make your own with flower dies already in your stash. Roses work well for Christmas – just make them in seasonal colours to give them a festive feel!

fixes Waste not, want not I’ve been having a clear out of my Christmas papers as I want to refresh my cupboard with spring designs, but I don’t want to throw them away. Do you have any ideas on how to use them? Victoria Smythe, Truro Vicky: It would be a shame to throw all of your paper scraps away, Victoria. I try to use up all my papers, even the smallest pieces, and never throw anything away! You could make a contemporary Christmas tree card like I’ve done here. Start by cutting a panel of card 11x15cm and cover it with paper. Cut

6x1.5cm strips of Christmas paper and fold each one in half. Arrange a tree shape by gluing five strips of paper to the bottom of where you want the tree to begin. You can also incorporate small lengths of ribbon into the design. I have decorated the tree with brads, but you could also use adhesive gems. Once you’ve finished your tree, attach the panel to the centre of a 15cm square card blank with foam pads. Add a festive sentiment, in the top left corner, to finish.

You could use this technique for a birthday card by arranging the papers into a balloon

Add personalised sentiments to make a truly special present!

Die-cut Santa

Pop-up present

Across the miles My daughter is about to go travelling and she’ll be away for Christmas. Have you got any ideas for a card that I can give her to keep her festive spirits up? Sarah Golding, Dublin Anne: How exciting for your daughter, Sarah! Why not make a pop-up box card as they fold flat for easy posting but really have a wow factor. Try printing your own sentiments as then you can make it truly personal. Cut a 7cm strip of card and cut and fold using a pop-up box card template. Put glue along the tab and stick to make your box. Cut two 11cm strips of card and score 2cm at each end. Fold these, add glue to the ends and then stick to the inside of the box. Glue Christmas trees and Santa to the strips using small pieces of card. Cut squares of paper to decorate the card and finish with embellishments. Why not practise with this issue’s free gift? Turn to page 6 to see more.

Make the most of your trimming offcuts with this terrific tree

Merry Xmas

I have been given a die-cutting machine for my birthday and am thinking of making some die-cut Christmas cards. Have you seen any cute Santa die cuts? Carol Ellis, Ipswich Anne: There are always lots of new designs out for Christmas crafting and one of my favourites is Eline’s Santa from Marianne Designs. It cuts all the elements separately and then you piece them together. Tonic Studios does a similar style in its Rococo Santa Claus Trio, which is great value for money as you get three variations – giving you lots of options for creating scenes. Depending on your machine, you can also buy steel rule dies which are deeper and cut a wider range of materials. Sizzix’s St Nick Steel Rule die (available from www. sizzix.co.uk) can be used with felt, fabric and chipboard, which gives you many design options.

Sizzix’s Santa die will add some festive cheer to any card

Sprinkle Flower Soft to guarantee a white Christmas!

Snowy scenes I have been making some wintry scene cards and want to add a dusting of snow. However, I don’t want to use glitter as I want it to be realistic. Do you know of any products that’ll do the job? Lucy Williams, Llandudno Sarah: If you want to create the perfect snowy effect, then Flower Soft in Polar White is ideal; you apply glue then sprinkle Flower Soft on top. It’s perfect for adding a snowy finish to your card design (www. katysuedesigns.com). WOW! Embossing Powders’ White Puff Ultra High is used in the same way as normal embossing powder, but when melted rises three times higher. Add glue to the areas you wish to add snow, sprinkle White Puff on top and melt with a heat tool (www. wowembossingpowder.co.uk). cardmakingandpapercraft.com

How to.. 3D house cards

1 Cut a 14x28cm piece of white card, and score vertically down the centre. Rotate the card to landscape and then score it from top to bottom at 7cm, 14cm and 21cm.

I’ve been given a set of watercolour paints, and would love to paint my own cards, but I don’t feel confident enough to create my own scenes. Are there any stencils that would help with the shading? Anne Holmes, Leeds Becky: You can achieve some beautiful effects when using watercolours with a little practise. The nature of the paints means they’re best used in a wet form so I wouldn’t recommend using them with stencils as it can be difficult to prevent bleeding. However, if you are nervous of painting your own designs then I would suggest stamping your outline with waterproof ink such as Ranger Archival Ink and using your paints to colour. There are many scenic stamps to get you started, such as Clarity Stamp’s Cottage and Hedge stamps (available from www.claritystamp.com), which features line art that indicates where shading is required. Practise on scrap card to perfect your watercolouring technique.

2 Look for the scored square shape in the middle of the card. Score diagonally across it in both directions. Cut a 2cmwide strip from each corner of the area outside of the square.

Build your colouring confidence with scenic stamps to guide you

Spot of bother When applying gems to my designs with a glue gun, I often leave strands of glue on the card. Is there a way of avoiding this? Victoria Carson, Dorchester

3 Fold the diagonal folds as mountain folds and tuck in the sides to form the roof shape. Fold the walls in to form a cross shape that will stand up. Glue the roof folds to secure.

Anne: That’s a great question Victoria, because most of us who use a hot glue gun will have come across this; it’s very frustrating and can spoil the look of your finished project. One useful tip is to apply a hair dryer or heat gun for a few

Christmas bliss My wife and I are spending our first Christmas together, and I was thinking of surprising her with a handmade card. Can you help with a card design, please? Kevin Locke, Harrogate Becky: Congratulations to you both – your first Christmas together as a married couple is such a special time. I thought a pair of penguins would add a really romantic touch. I punched a decorative flowery border along the base of a tent-fold card. I then covered the tent-fold card with nesting panels cut from the First Editions Winter Wishes paper pack as I really like its soft contemporary palette. Add simple strips of peach and blue patterned paper to finish the background, as shown. Layer up die-cut hearts and place a penguin couple holding a punched heart in the centre, adding glitter to the star and the penguins’ hats for extra sparkle. Embellish the card with gems, stars, a personalised printed greeting and a silver bow, as shown.

seconds over your work and the glue strings will melt and disappear. Just be careful that you don’t hold it there for too long, as the rest of the glue may melt and your embellishment will come loose. To try and avoid leaving strands in the first place, make sure your gun is fully heated up before applying and keep the nozzle clean in between applications. You could also try twisting it quickly in a circular motion to break the thread before moving the gun.

Give your yuletide cards a vintage makeover with our retro papers! I couldn’t wait to get started with these gorgeous papers. I die cut candy canes from the striped paper and used the spotty paper to make a snowflake border. The final touch was to add two cute gingerbread people. Jackie Trinder

As soon as I saw the beautiful house papers I knew that I wanted to make a card featuring a ‘From Our Home to Yours’ sentiment. I think the colour combinations are striking and modern, but you can still use a traditional style. Jennifer Chapman

Sketch Challenge

Wrap up your greetings cards with a quilted patchwork this Christmas…

E

ach issue we’ll bring you a new sketch to inspire your card making – this month’s design has been created by Quick Cards’ Art Assistant, Emily. Why not take inspiration from your winter throw and create a patchwork-effect card for Christmas! Emily has made a super-simple template with just a few elements to inspire our designers this month, and we think you’ll be amazed at what they have come up with – and our clever reader design team too! There are lots of helpful tips as well, so you can have fun designing your own cards. Remember, we love to see what you make, so when you’ve had a go at this easy quilted challenge, send us a pic at [email protected]. We’re looking forward to hearing from you soon! A sketch is a basic template that can be used to help you get started with designing your card. You can follow the sketch exactly, take a few elements from it or simply use it to inspire some creativity – the choice is yours!

Kitty’s top tips • Creating various squares for the background is a great way to use up all of your festive paper scraps.

Kitty Frampton Kitty has gone really festive with her Santa’s little helpers design. The kraft card beneath the patterned paper gives the card extra texture and almost looks like a pile of presents!

64

• Using a pre-coloured image for the topper is a perfect timesaver if you have lots of cards to create for friends and family. • Choose patterned papers that match the topper for a fully colour-coordinated card design.

We also asked three of our readers to try out our sketch; here’s what they made…

Julie’s top tips Julie Gibbs Julie’s use of machine stitching and a hessian ribbon has made this card feel ever so cosy and rustic, and is really evocative of a festive bedspread.

• Keep your finished look simple by only using patterned paper on alternate squares. • Add machine stitching to give extra texture. If you don’t have a sewing machine, draw on faux stitching with a marker. • Choose a large sentiment to deliver a fun festive message.

Wooden toppers add rustic charm to any card

Teresa Smith I mounted die-cut squares in two different colours onto gold heat embossed card. I then cut an aperture for the sentiment which I framed with silver gems and a black banner. Emily says: Your card is a real showstopper, Teresa!

Sue Nicholson I used Lili of the Valley Christmas papers and an icicle die to complement the cheery snowman stamp on this patchwork scalloped card. Emily says: I like the way the snowy papers and hanging icicles give this card a frosty feel, Sue!

Becky’s top tips Becky James Becky has used baker’s twine, parchment and festive shades of red and green to great effect to create a wonderfully traditional patchwork card.

cardmakingandpapercraft.com

• Choose text-based papers as part of your background as a novel take on a sentiment. • Frame the central topper using adhesive gems in a complementary colour. • Parchment or cream paper add a vintage feel to your card – perfect for a timeless look.

Rachel Gillham I created a quilt effect using paper scraps marked with faux stitching. I coloured a partridge stamp and attached it with foam pads. Emily says: The glittery touches and use of different papers make your quilt look so cosy, Rachel!

What’s on Don’t forget these important Christmas dates…

We asked our online fans… what cutting-edge crafting tool would you invent? I’d invent craft storage to look like Cher’s wardrobe in the film Clueless, where I could look through all my stash to decide which pieces I wanted to use together. Dawn Deacon I’d invent a craft table that cleans itself, puts everything away after you have finished and then folds itself up out of sight. Karyn Wilder I would invent a tool to hoover up the stray glitter and embossing powder from my desk, clothes and skin at the touch of a button as my husband is fed up of waking up in the morning with glitter on his face. Celebrity cards You’ll recognise Stephanie from her shows on Create and Craft TV!

Our celebrity crafter Stephanie Weightman is starting her Christmas card making in style! t’s that time of year again when I start batch making Christmas cards for my neighbours, colleagues and friends. They’re a little bit quicker to make than the cards I create for my nearest and dearest, but they still need to be impressive. This year I’ve been inspired to make cute and quirky cards using the Bert and Gert’s Christmas stamp set. So, some of you may be asking, “who are Bert and Gert?” Well, Bert and Gert’s is run by Birmingham-based brothers Mark and Jason Wilkes. Bert was their paternal grandfather and Gert their maternal grandmother. Now there’s a family business with a very family name! I just love their story – Bert was an artist and Gert got both boys baking, knitting, sewing and enjoying various other crafts. Jason still has the knitted hat that he helped Gert to make for him. It was a time when the mantra was ‘make do and mend it’ –

I

today we call it upcycling! It reminds me so much of my family, and it is wonderful to hear that other families are enjoying crafts that have been passed down. Bert and Gert’s organised over 150 arts and crafts events all around the country last year, with over 3,000 businesses taking part. They aim to give support and a platform for small businesses and you can catch them (and me!) at Crafting Live in Peterborough from 11–12 November. So, as the sentiment goes… ‘Have a cool yule’. Now, where is that penguin stamp?

STEPHANIES’S TOP TIPS FOR…

Stamping To get the best results when stamping, always make sure you are working onto a good solid flat surface. A glass mat is perfect.

1

When inking your stamp, take the ink pad to the stamp, then slant it to the light so you can see if the stamp is shiny. If it is patchy, then add some more ink.

2

Try to apply even pressure to the stamp and avoid rocking it otherwise you risk blurring the image or creating a shadow.

3

Always store your stamps and inks away from direct light, somewhere that’s not too hot and not too cold or stamps can go brittle and inks will dry up.

4

Keep stamps in great condition by cleaning them with alcoholfree wipes between each use.

We chat to Paula Gorry from Stampin’ Up! as the brand celebrates 10 years in the UK

S

tampin’ Up! has been keeping us inspired with unique stamps and papercrafting products for over a decade in the UK and Europe now, through its network of demonstrators. We caught up with UK Business Development Manager, Paula Gorry, to find out what it’s like working for this unique company…

How did you come to join Stampin’ Up! as UK Business Development Manager? I was approached by a representative from Stampin’ Up! 11 years ago. I visited the office in Riverton, Utah, and met with our co-founder and Board Chair, Shelli Gardner. I was so inspired by Shelli and this incredible global creative community she has created. I felt an overwhelming sense of family and connection and I knew instantly there was something very special about Stampin’ Up!

What does your average day look like? My role as Demonstrator Development Manager involves establishing relationships with Stampin’ Up! demonstrators at all title levels and helping them experience a rewarding journey with Stampin’ Up! My passion is personal development and I help demonstrators to develop through coaching and mentoring. My daily activities are quite varied, as you can imagine. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is the opportunity to gather with demonstrators in person, whether that’s at smaller gettogethers out in the field or at our large Stampin’ Up! OnStage events which happen every six months. This is when we bring together demonstrators from all over the country to showcase forthcoming new product releases, offer business and creative tips, and celebrate achievements.

has given me the opportunity to help others and this has been a blessing in my life.

Where do you look for inspiration? I see inspiration all around me, both in my personal and professional life. I am inspired every day by our dedicated Stampin’ Up! staff and when I talk to demonstrators. I am inspired when I receive a handmade card, knowing that someone made it just for me. If I am having a stressful day, getting creative with stamps, ink and paper is a tonic. My husband and children inspire me and I love how they have connected with Stampin’ Up! through me.

What are your favourite Stampin’ Up! products right now? It’s so hard to pick a favourite. I love the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with Christmas, and so I would have to say that the ‘Quilted Christmas’ suite featured in our Autumn/ Winter range stands out for me. It’s retro with a contemporary twist and I plan to use it in my Christmas makes this year.

Do you have any crafty hobbies? I really enjoy making focaccia and gnocchi. My husband and I have an Irish and Italian heritage and spend a lot of time cooking for our big families. Also, I recently organised an employee ‘Alfresco Cooking and Crafting for mindfulness morning’ – we made focaccia and gnocchi, and crafted table settings. It was a great way to de-stress.

Crafting with stamps and inks is Paula’s ideal tonic to cope with the festive mayhem

2017 marks the 10-year anniversary of Stampin’ Up! in the UK and Europe… While Stampin’ Up! is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Europe, we are proud to be celebrating 30 years globally next year. Building relationships is at the core of what we do, and our mission statement is: ‘To love what we do, and share what we love, as we help others enjoy creativity and worthwhile accomplishments… in this we make a difference!’

What have been the highlights of the past decade for you? Stampin’ Up! never ceases to amaze me in the way we can help others in so many ways. We help people to discover creativity, make new friends and form relationships. We offer an escape from the stresses of modern day life and help people make something that means something. Finally, we offer entrepreneurship, the opportunity to develop your own business and tailor it around you and your family.

Why do you think Stampin’ Up! is such a hugely popular brand?

What do you love most about your job?

I think it’s down to our product quality and our stunning and beautifully coordinated designs. At Stampin’ Up! we recognise that every project and every stamper is slightly different, which is why we offer unique styles of stamps. Plus, the passion and commitment from Stampin’ Up! demonstrators inspires and helps others in their creative endeavours.

I love this industry because it’s such a dynamic and passionate environment to work in and one that offers much scope for personal development. I often get asked, ‘How do you stay so motivated after 10 years?’ I simply answer that I have a passion to help people move forward and Stampin’ Up!
