Facial Expressions •

"Facial expressions have been extensively analyzed by Paul Ekman and his collaborators in relation to the emotions of anger, fear, happiness, sadness, disgust, and curiosity (Ekman and Oster)... Essentially, what these authors found is that if actors are instructed to produce just the facial prototypes (contraction of specific facial muscles) related to each of the mentioned emotions, physiological changes occur which are different according to the facial prototype." (Levenson et al.).

"Pure facial mimicry obtained with these prototypical muscular actions undoubtedly produces universal emotion signals. However, the resulting expressions may appear to the observer as artificial masks rather than as re-created emotions (personal observation). If more elements of the emotional system are activated, ... the emotional output is more vivid and closer to a natural emotion."

"The qualities which fill and permeate each muscle of the entire body, will provoke within you feelings ... and stimulate the depths of your own psychology." (Michael Chekhov)

The relationship of facial muscles to emotions has been analyzed at length mainly by Eckman & Oster (1979) and by Izard (1971). A smaller number of experimental studies have dealt with thepostural system (e.g. Riskind, 1984; Kudoh & Masumoto, 1985; Duclos, Laird, Schneider, Sexter, Stem & Van Lighten, 1989). •
