By the ideal book, I suppose we are ro understand a book nOI limited by commercial exigencies of price: we can do whac \Ve like wirh ir, according to whar ¡es nature, as a book, demand,\ of Art. Bur we may conclude, 1 think, that its maker will limit us somewhat; a work on differential calculus, a medie,tI work, a diccionary, a colleerion of sr3resmen's speeche~. of a [featise on manners, sueh books, though they mighl be handsomely and well printed, would scareely reeeivr ornament with che same exuberance as a volume of Iyric,¡l poems, oc a standard c1assic, oc such like. A work 011 Art, I think, bears less of ornament than any other kind of bOOh (NON BIS IN IDEM is a good motto); again, a book that mu'l have illusrrations, more oc less utilitarian, should, 1 think, have no actual ornament at alt because che ornament 3nd the illustration must almost certainly fight.
