1.1.3 Benefits Cloud-based Architecture for Smooth Network Evolution U2020 is a future-proof solution for managing mobile networks of different RATs. It uses a microservice architecture that allows for long-term network evolution. U2020 enables operators to continuously improve O&M, while retaining valuable O&M experience of earlier network management systems. 

U2020 is a centralized wireless network management platform. Its server software consists of base version software and mediation software. −

The base version software implements system functions.

The mediation software mediates connections between U2020 and the NEs it manages.

The open structure of U2020 allows it to manage wireless networks of different RATs (such as GSM, UMTS, LTE, and NR), WLAN, eRelay, SingleDAS, core network, STP, NGN, and IMS. As networks expand, U2020 can be scaled out accordingly. 

U2020 manages co-MPT base stations and provides centralized O&M for GBTSs, NodeBs, and eNodeBs, improving SingleRAN O&M efficiency.

U2020 manages NEs in the CloudEdge and Service Anchor solutions. These NEs are virtualized as apps and share standard hardware resources on demand.

U2020 provides standard CORBA, SNMP, file, and alarm streaming interfaces to interconnect with systems from other vendors, such as AirCom, Inspur, Remedy, Vallent, MyCOM, and Bright Oceans.

U2000 can be upgraded to U2020, which saves hardware costs.

U2020 provides a unified web portal to support more efficient and simple web O&M experience. U2020 also supports flexible service deployment and rollout.

U2020 provides services 24/7, making network O&M more intelligent and automatic.

U2020 provides efficient, comprehensive VNF life cycle management, helping users easily and efficiently operate and maintain cloud networks.

Powerful Network Management Centralized management of large networks requires high system performance. In addition, hardware reuse and smooth scale-out are critical market requirements. To meet these requirements, U2020 provides: 

The virtual cluster system can be scaled out by adding service VMs. It allows multiple OSSs (such as U2020, emergency system, and Trace Server) to be clustered together.

Reduced OPEX 

The Configuration Management Express (CME) adopts a wizard-based, template-based, and graphical mode, together with the powerful configuration planning function, network-wide data check function, and configuration data comparison against the baseline cell function, to securely and efficiently support full-process data configuration of the entire RAN. Through CME, users can create sites in batches remotely, expand network capacity rapidly, optimize networks efficiently, and reparent base stations conveniently. In this way, CME makes configuration more efficient and more accurate.

iSStar, an enhanced maintenance platform, enables O&M personnel to customize service processes by programing and allows U2020 to automatically handle O&M tasks in batches.

U2020 provides the following functions, including network health check, remote and batch upgrade of NEs, automatic planning of base stations, automatic optimization neighbor relationships, remote commissioning of base stations, device panels, maintenance-mode alarm setting, RAN sharing management, and small cell indoor location visualization.

The above functions help O&M engineers improve work efficiency and lower the operating expense (OPEX).

1.2 Architecture 1.2.1 Overview This chapter describes the basic structures of U2020 hardware and software. U2020 works in browser/server mode. The U2020 software consists of the server software and NE adaptation software. A web browser is used on a client and the server software and mediation software run on the server. U2020 provides a web portal for unified O&M.

1.2.2 Hardware Structure Hardware Structure The U2020 hardware typically consists of a U2020 server, U2020 clients, and various networking devices. Figure 1-1 shows the hardware structure of U2020. For details about U2020 networking solutions, see 1.3.2 O&M Solutions.

1.2.4 External Interfaces The U2020 provides multiple interfaces to interconnect with external systems and software. Table 1-2 describes these interfaces in detail. Table 1-2 External interfaces Northbound Interface

Description

Security Policy

CORBA interfaces

CORBA interfaces comply with 3GPP Release 6 specifications.

These interfaces support SSL and non-SSL connection. SSL is used by default and is recommended because it is more secure than non-SSL protocols.

Through CORBA interfaces, the NMS: 

Manages U2020 alarms.

Sets performance measurement tasks.

Queries U2020 configuration data.

Queries and delivers configuration parameters in batches.

CORBA security interface

Through this interface, the NMS manages U2020 users and user permissions, including creating users and maintaining user data.

Alarm streaming interface

The U2020 forwards NE alarms in character streams to the NMS in real time through the alarm streaming interface. Then, the NMS obtains the list of active alarms from the U2020.

Command line interface

The U2020 forwards MML commands between the NMS and NEs. The NMS uses MML commands over this interface to operate and maintain NEs.

TL1 northbound interface

This interface is used to interconnect the EMS with the OSS. Through this interface, the OSS or NMS provides services and performs O&M for:

Security Policy

In addition, the OSS or NMS uses the TL1 northbound interface to manage NGN resources and SHLR, AGCF, and SoftX3000 services, and to enable automatic reporting of notification messages. The U2020 saves alarms; performance, configuration, and inventory data; and LTE trace data into files. The NMS then obtains the files through the file interface for processing.

File interface

If the CME is installed, the file interface can be used to integrate operator data planning tools into the U2020. This allows data to be automatically planned, modified, and activated for network O&M, such as site deployment, site relocation, network parameter optimization, and neighbor relationship optimization. Alarm SNMP interface

The U2020 forwards alarms to the NMS in real time through the alarm SNMP interface. The NMS then processes the alarms. The alarm SNMP interface supports SNMPv1, SNMPv2, and SNMPv3.

This interface supports FTP and SFTP transfer. SFTP is used by default and is recommended because it is more secure than FTP. For details, see related U2020 northbound file interface developer guides.

The alarm SNMP interface supports SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and SNMPv3. SNMPv3 (using a user-based security mechanism) is recommended because it is more secure than SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c (using a community-name-based security mechanism). When you upgrade the U2000 to the current U2020 version, make sure that SNMPv3 is used. For details, see U2020

Management capability

Hardware specifications

Reliability specifications

Safety specifications

EMC specifications

Environmental specifications

1.6.2 Management Capability The U2020 management capability is measured by the number of equivalent NEs and is used as a basis for configuring the U2020 server. The U2020 management capability varies with the OS version and database version, regardless of hardware configuration. The management capability is determined by: 

Types and versions of physical NEs Physical NEs of different types and versions consume different U2020 resources, and are converted into different numbers of equivalent NEs.

Number of performance counters Reporting all performance counters of an NE requires different U2020 hardware capabilities from reporting only KPIs. Therefore, NEs reporting different numbers of performance counters are converted into different number of equivalent NEs.

Performance measurement period NEs report performance data to U2020 at certain intervals. Processing performance data reported every 60 minutes requires a different amount of U2020 hardware resources from processing performance data reported every 15 minutes.

For details, see the equivalent NE calculation table in U2020 V300R019 Management Capability. You can obtain this document from Huawei technical support. For any question, contact Huawei technical support.

The database VMs include the database VM for the CME configuration change history management component (CMHDB), which is an optional VM.

For the core networks whose management capability is 400 equivalent NEs or more, the app VMs do not include the FMA VM. The specifications of the FMA VM are the same as those of the other app VMs. The FMA VM is optional and it needs to be added in the CloudEdge scenario.

Management Capability Evaluation Principles When U2020 meets the requirements for data storage capability and number of concurrent users, the data processing capability of U2020 is evaluated based on hardware resources (including the CPU, memory, and database) used by U2020 during operation. CPU usage is the most important indicator reflecting hardware resource consumption. When running at the maximum processing rate, U2020 must meet the following requirements at the same time: 

The free memory space on the master or slave server is greater than or equal to 6% (one sixteenth) of the total memory space.

Performance data and northbound data (exported by NE) of each period on the master and slave servers must be processed before the next period begins. Processing specifications are as follows: (a) If the period is 15 minutes, data must be processed within 10 minutes. (b) If the period is 30 minutes, data must be processed within 15 minutes. (c) If the period is 60 minutes, data must be processed within 20 minutes.

Within 24 hours, the average CPU usage on the master or slave server does not exceed 60%.

Within a measurement period (excluding the 5-minute period), the CPU usage cannot exceed 80% for longer than 10 minutes.
