A NOTE ON KRONECKER MATRIX PRODUCTS AND MATRIX EQUATION SYSTEMS H.

1. If A (aij) is an (m, n) matrix and B is an (s, t) matrix, the (ms, nt) Kronecker product A (R) B is defined as A (R) B (aijB).

One of the important properties of this product is that it enables us to convert matrices into column vectors. For this we need the following definition and theorem.

DEFINITION 1. Let A.j denote the jth column of an (m, n) matrix A. The mn column vector vec A is then defined as

where B’ is the transpose of B. It has been shown that Definition 1 and Theorem 1 can fruitfully be applied to problems of matrix differentiation [2]. In this note it will be shown that they can be applied to a more general class of linear matrix equations, including linear matrix differential equations. Firstly, four standard properties of Kronecker products have to be related, all of which may be proved in an elementary fashion 1, p. 223 ff.]. The matrices involved can have any appropriate orders. In Property 4 it is assumed that A and B are square of order m and s, respectively. (The same order assumption will be made in Theorems 2 and 3, which will be presented further on.) PROPERTY 1. 3. The same sort of technique can clearly be applied to the equation AX + XB C, all matrices having the same orders as in the previous section. We rewrite the equation as

This condition has been established by Bellman [1, p. 231] along analogous lines. In case C 0 we can state: Necessary and sufficient for the equation to have a nontrivial solution is +/ 0 for some and j.

4. Another interesting example is the equation
