THE ULTIMATE LEGATO MASTERCLASS Beginner

INTRODUCTION Thanks for checking out my Legato Masterclass! First, in case you’re not sure what legato means, it’s an Italian term which comes from the word for “bind” or “tie”. Basically, it means that the notes are joined together, with no gaps between them. In other words, we use hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides to create a smoother sound, instead of picking every note. Through the three sections of this masterclass, I’m going to take you methodically through the basic techniques and then apply them to different scale and arpeggio patterns, gradually increasing in speed and complexity. The first thing to do is to practice hammer-ons and pull-offs. Let’s start with exercises for each. HAMMER-ONS Hammer exercise 1 This is a chromatic pattern, where you pick the 1st fret notes and then hammer on with each of your other three fingers. Hold all notes for their full length and try to make every note loud and clear. The Tab just shows the exercise at the first fret, but for extra practice, you could move it up the neck. Hammer exercise 3 Now we’re creating a smooth line using all four fingers. It’s always worth looking closely at your legato technique. Is your finger landing accurately on the string, just behind the fret? Is your finger moving far enough to create a loud sound, but not so much that you waste energy? When playing legato, it’s always important to stop unwanted noises from the other strings. When playing hammer-ons on the low strings you need to mute the high strings under your fretboard-hand fingers…

But when you’re playing on the high strings you mute the unused low strings with your picking hand…

PULL OFFS There are four pull-off exercises. As with the hammer-ons, our primary aim right now is to get a loud, clear sound from the legato techniques. Again, take the time to look closely at your technique. The pull-off is NOT simply the opposite of the hammer-on. With the hammer-on, your finger hits the string at a 90° angle. For pull-offs, you need a sharper angle, so your finger-tip can pull the string slightly sideways. Pull-off exercise 1 Here, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers are pulling off to the 1st finger, on all strings. For extra practice, move the pattern to other fretboard positions.

PERMUTATIONS A good way to practise the legato over scale patterns (or any pattern) is to use permutations. Basically, this means taking the notes on each string and playing them in a different order. We’re using familiar 3-note-per-string scale patterns, so each string has the notes 1, 2 and 3 (this is nothing to do with the fingers). As an example, here’s the 3rd fret G major scale pattern… So, what we do is create permutations based on those numbered notes. Permutation A – 3 1 2 3 2 1 Permutation B – 1 3 2 1 2 3 If you check out the Tab file for Permutation A Exercise 1, you’ll see how it works. Our basic pattern (312321) is applied to the three notes on each string, so you get a six-note legato pattern on each string. Then we have seven exercises (for the seven mode shapes) for each permutation. For all 14 exercises, you’re playing 6-note legato patterns on every string, picking just the first note. Again, try to make the hammer-ons and pull-offs loud and clear, but keep the dynamics consistent. It’s no good playing one REALLY LOUD pull-off, if the next hammer-on is weak and weedy! Also, it’s good to practise with a clean and overdriven tones. Both are necessary… accuracy and muting are more important with distortion, but strength and dynamics are more important with a clean tone. SLIDES Another cool part of legato technique is the slide. Specifically, we’re talking about a slide joining two notes, not the quick random slides at the start and end of notes. There are three slide exercises to get your technique into shape. Slide exercise 1 The Tab and video show all three exercises on the 3rd string, but it’s important that you practise them on all strings. The pattern also involves hammer-ons and pull-offs, so this is a full test of your legato technique. You could practise this first exercise with different pairs of fingers… 1-2, 2-3, 3-4.

SOLO & LICKS In the full solo, I’ve tried to demonstrate how I might use legato techniques in my “real world” playing. It’s up to you how you use this solo… learn it, steal a few licks or just jam over the backing track! The whole solo is in D Dorian (D E F G A B C) and you can also use minor pentatonic (D F G A C) or blues scale (D F G Ab A C). I’ve extracted some licks from the solo and added a few more to create the 10 isolation licks. These give a more focused way of incorporating legato into your playing. Lick 1: The first note is a bend from the b5 blue note (Ab) up to the 5th (A). There’s lots of chromatic legato lines here, using the notes in between the regular minor pentatonic notes.
