INK DIFFUSION EXPERIMENT I. INRTODUCTION:

Diffusion is the movements of molecules from high concentration to low concentration. By using a drop of ink in water as a representation, we can see how the particles move, as well as how long it will take to spread and how does the temperature affect the diffusion. II. MATERIALS:

 Dropper (1)  Liquid food color (any color)  Clear plastic cups (2)  Half cup- cold & hot water  Stopwatch III. PROCEDURE:

1. Pour cold water into one plastic cup. 2. Pour hot water into the other plastic cup. 3. By the use of dropper, put a drop of food color into the first cup (cold water) and record the time. Do the same at the second cup (hot water). 4. Observe and record the results. IV. RESULTS AND OBSERVATION: A. Cold water with ink

During the experiment, when a drop of food color is added in the cold water, it diffused slowly with 11.07 seconds. B. Hot water with ink

During the experiment, when a drop of food color is added in the hot water, it diffused a bit faster than with the cold water with 9.73 seconds. GUIDE QUESTIONS: 1. What happens when you add food coloring to hot and cold water?

The food color will spread throughout the container. 2. Does diffusion happen faster in hot or cold temperatures? Why?

The diffusion happens faster in hot temperature because high temperature has more active molecules.

3. Differentiate simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion based on your own understanding.

Simple diffusion is when particles does not need an assistance for it to pass through a plasma membrane. While in facilitated diffusion, particles move through a carrier. 4. Give at least three real-life examples of diffusion.

4.1. When you’re inside an LRT that is jampacked and when you get off. 4.2. Breathing in and out 4.3. When spraying perfume 5. Why is diffusion important to living things?

Diffusion is important because it is the process of the movement of molecules from low concentration to high concentration and vice versa. It occurs in our daily life that we can’t live without. Without diffusion plants will wither, humans and animals won’t breathe. V.

CONCLUSION:

Therefore, I conclude that the molecules of hot water make the particles of the food color spread faster in the container. It is because hot water has more active molecules than the cold water. The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of diffusion.

OSMOSIS IN PLANTS I. INTRODUCTION:

Osmosis is the process of a solvent that pass through a semipermeable membrane from low concentration to high concentration. By using a plant as a representation, we can now observe the process of osmosis. II. MATERIALS:

 Celery (2 sticks)  Flowers with white petals  Clear empty plastic bottle (3)  Liquid food color (any color)  Water  Dropper (1) III. PROCEDURE:

1. Fill each bottle halfway. 2. By the use of dropper, put a drop of food color into the first and third bottle. 3. Cut the celery and put one stick into the first bottle (colored water) and second bottle (water) 4. Cut and put the flower into the third bottle (colored water) 5. Observe and record the result IV. RESULTS AND OBSERVATION: A. Celery WITHOUT food color

The celery placed in the bottle without food color sustained its color. B. Celery WITH food color

The celery placed in the bottle with food color grew with colors in its leaves. C. Flower/s WITH food color

Osmosis is the process of a solvent that pass through a semipermeable membrane from low concentration to high concentration. 2. How do plants drink?

Plants drink from their roots, the roots absorb water through osmosis.

3. How did the food color reach the leaves/petals?

The food color reached the leave/petals of the plants because the water that had been absorbed by roots is being conducted upward through its xylem. 4. How do cells deal with osmosis?

Cells of plants will swell up and become hard when it is filled with water. 5. What will happen if you leave a potato submerged on a highly concentrated NaCl solution? Explain.

The potato will become flexible and dark in color. It is because the water inside the potato diffuse across the semipermeable membrane from high concentration to low concentration. 6. What is the importance of osmosis in living things?

The importance of osmosis is to help our environment to maintain its balance. V.

CONCLUSION:

Therefore, I conclude that first, osmosis is the reason why the petals/leaves of the plants changed in color. Second, the potato that we used also changed its physical form because the water inside the potato moves out by osmosis. It changed from firm to flexible and fresh color to brown. Lastly, osmosis can be used to explain how plant cell absorb water from the soil and how can we determine how plants do the process of photosynthesis.
