OBJECTIVE : Talk about news events using the simple past passive.Talk about natural disasters using the simple past passive + by. Use expressions like Guess what? to tell news.

Grammar: Simple past passive In sentences with active verbs, the subject is the “doer” and the object is the “receiver” of an action. Use active verbs to focus on the “doer” or cause.

In sentences with passive verbs, the subject is the “receiver” of the action. Use passive verbs to focus on the “receiver” or when the “doer” or cause is not known or not important. A student found a bad on a bus. A bag was found on a bus. The authorities closed the airport. The airport was closed. A teenager saw two bears in a yard. Two bears were seen in a yard. The accident didn’t injure the passengers. The passengers weren’t injured.

A 500-pound bear was found (find) asleep in a basement on Tuesday morning. The bear was woken up (wake up) by a workman, who said he “freaked” when he realized it was a bear. Wildlife officers were called (call), and the bear was taken (take) to a state park.

A sporting goods store was broken into (break into) yesterday and 50 bicycles were stolen (steal). A white truck was seen (see) outside the store around 5:00 a.m. However, security cameras were damaged (damage) during the break in, so thieves were not caught (not catch) on camera.

Millions of stolen banknotes were found (find) in a police raid this morning. Police believe the money was stolen (steal) from a city bank two years ago.

The highway was closed (close) for several hours last night after a car was hit (hit) by an oil truck. Hundreds of gallons of oil were spilled (spill) onto the highway. Two passengers in the car were taken (take) to the hospital. The driver of the truck was not injured (not injured).

Aftershocks were felt in several towns.
