AECOsim Building Designer (beta) TUTORIAL Nor Cal Bentley Bash 1. Open Master.DGN (sample file delivered with AECOsim) a. Read the “readme” note that pops up about AECOsim Building Designer b. Explore the user interface and note: i. Familiar MicroStation layout 1. Pull downs for File through Help 2. New pull down for Building Designer 3. Main at top left 4. Tasks down the left side (click down arrow to open up) ii. New pull-down for Building Designer 1. Architectural –preferences for the “Bentley Architecture” tasks 2. Space Planner- may say “load” or “unload” depending on modules wanted.- space planner can do stacking and blocking 3. Structural- Structural Modeler preferences 4. Mechanical- Bentley Mechanical preferences 5. Electrical-Bentley Building Electrical preferences 6. Dynamic Views/Drawing manager…. 7. Datagroups 8. Family and Parts 9. Verify configuration 10. Floor Selector and Floor Manager 11. Misc other iii. Step through main commands in the tasks…. 1. Architectural Design 2. Structural Design 3. Structural Import/Export 4. Structural Analysis 5. View control and status same as MicroStation c. A few ways to navigate: i. Double click view heading to maximize or return view. ii. Right click in context iii. Hover over object to see all detailed material information iv. Hold shift-data button to pan a view 2. Create a new file for making a simple model: a. File>New b. Navigate to “Design Seed” c. Name it your name d. Window>tile e. Double click heading of View 3 to maximize isometric 3. Build the structural model first (note database is limited in this beta version) a. Click Structural tasks to open and see all the tools b. Click Place Steel Column Primary c. Observe the tool settings…. i. W10x45 column (huge but ok for our exercise) ii. Review settings. Use the defaults. Note 14’ long column iii. Place the first column anywhere then, using AccuDraw, 1. Place a second column 30’ to the x direction 2. Then a third column 25 in negative x (toward you) 3. Then fourth, 30’ back to line up with the first. iv. Next, select Place steel Beam – Primary. 1. Note the tool settings. Use the default, place by two points. 2. Snap on the top of the first column. Note that the beam goes to the bottom. To fix that, go to bottom of screen and change to floor 2 a. Click on icon b. Double click floor 2 or single click and click Set Active 3. Snap to center top of each column. 4. Zoom into one of the corners and see how Structural modeler cleans up the joints. 4. Next, build walls around the columns: a. Close structural tasks.

b. Open Architectural tasks c. Change back to floor 1 d. Click Place Wall (or press W 1) e. Note settings. 1’ thick wall, 14’ high f. use center of wall for placement g. snap to bottom center of each column and place four walls. Place doors (T 1) a. Close Place Wall by clicking on element selection arrow or by clicking on place door b. Select HM_Drywall I 2 Lite_Double_Unequal door (click lower left of settings) c. Click on front wall at lower left corner (thereby selecting the front wall for the door) d. Using AccuDraw, place the door 10’ along the wall. e. Click to place the door, and then click again so the door is swinging inside. Place Windows (T 4) a. Close the Place Door dialog b. Select the Place Window icon c. Place windows on all four walls similar to door procedure d. Using the Copy command, copy windows in each wall ensuring alignment with AccuDraw. Place Floor Slab a. Switch to top view b. Select Place Slab (A 1) c. Change “Place By” Flood d. Thickness to 1:0 e. Click inside room f. Left click again to accept g. Right click to end command h. Back to isometric view to be sure your floor slab was created. Change display style to smooth. (try others) Cut a drawing from the model: a. Drawing Manager task b. Open drawing manager dialog c. Click new drawing d. Name it e. Region + top view 4’ f. Save g. Calculate all h. View it i. (dimensioning etc not active yet) j. Drawing manager is the same for all disciplines Close architectural tasks a. Change back to Floor 2 b. Open HVAC Grille …

i. Click “place top square ceiling diffuser” ii. In top view, place conveniently c. Open HVAC Rectangular i. Make sure your views are arranged to top, front, right, isometric ii. Click on Place Rectangular Elbow (E1) iii. Place using all three regular views. iv. Use Rotate, Move and Copy to place correctly d. Place ducting with automatic elbows and joints i. Change floor to “none” ii. Click Place rectangular duct iii. Using center of duct to center of elbow, snap duct to elbow iv. Make two horizontal runs (note automatic elbow) v. Then change AccuDraw to Front view and head down into building vi. Observe how baffles are added and all fittings are added automatically e. Clash Detection i. Move the ducting so that it interferes with one of the steel columns ii. Click Coordination tasks 1. Chose Clash Detection 2. Click Create New Job. 3. Name it clash 4. Choose Levels method 5. Shift select all the “M” levels and drag into set A (red set) 6. Shift select all the “S” levels and drag into set B (blue set) 7. Note: the components were put on their correct level automatically 8. Click Process 9. Note there should be a couple of clashes and those are displayed f. Electrical coming but not available in this beta
