a. Speak out! Whether you want to act, sing or dance we will help you develop your techniques by rehearsing with our experts. We also offer help with script writing and poetry.

Ellie used to be in a choir but now she wants to experiment with different kinds of music. She loves rap and writes her own poetry. She would like to continue singing if possible and is happy to rehearse a couple of times a week.

b. Impro Style At our club you never know what to expect! Our story telling, acting, dancing and poetry recitals use improvisation techniques and we encourage our members to try new things. We never work with scripts so whether you say it or dance it, we don't care, just as

George wants to explore different kinds of performing. He’s happy to try anything and is keen to develop his writing skills. He doesn’t like dancing. He wants something with lots of rehearsal time because this helps with his confidence when performing.

Six months ago, if I had answered that question honestly, the answer would have been no. But now, all that has changed and I am the healthiest and happiest I have ever been! I have always loved junk food and I used to eat it whenever I could. But even though I was eating and drinking all my favourite things I never felt very happy. I used to feel tired and depressed and that meant I just stayed at home watching TV. I used to think to myself, 'I wish I could be more active and go and play with my friends', but I could never find the energy. Then, one day my parents asked me to go to a lecture with them. They told me it was about theatre but that wasn’t true! My parents were worried about me and wanted to help me so they had decided to take me to a lecture about healthy living. It was the best idea they have ever had. The lecturer spoke about all the damage an unhealthy diet can do and explained how it can make you feel really unhappy too. He also gave advice on how to improve your diet and involve more exercise in your life. Since then I have made lots of healthy many changes to my diet and I take regular exercise too. I feel great and I don’t miss the junk food. I do allow myself one exception though... Pizza night with my friends. But we always share. And if I can do it, anyone can!

The headmaster, Mr. Bellamy, said he felt proud that the students had shown such interest in the matter and he encouraged them to act. To begin with, I did it to just for myself and I never thought I would show anybody else what I had written. But one day my brother found my notebook and read my stories and he told me I should send them to a publisher. At first I was really angry. I’m always fighting with my brother anyway so you can imagine the fight we had after he read it. But the next day I saw a competition in the newspaper for young writers and I decided to send in my stories. I didn’t hear anything for a long time and in fact I have no idea what happened with the competition but one day I got a phone call from a publisher who wanted to meet me. The day I met her she said they wanted to publish my book! It’s a book of short stories, the same ones my brother read, and I can’t wait to see it in the local bookshop! 2 Read and write true (T) or false (F). A Photographic Journey by Andrew Carol Last week a photographer called Adam Potts came to our school and told us all about his work. His photographs showed the most incredible locations but his talk wasn’t just about these places. Adam is an ‘eco-warrior’: he loves photography, but his main concern is raising awareness about global warming. He hopes that his images will inspire people to start caring for our planet. After the talk we had a chance to meet Adam. He was really friendly and stayed with us for over an hour answering our questions. I asked him a question about the photographs he took after the terrible earthquake in the Philippines. I wanted to know if he was continuing to help the people there. Adam told me that with the money he raised from selling his pictures he was able to set up a charity based in the Philippines which gives temporary accommodation to homeless families and is also involved in the construction of new eco-friendly housing using recycled materials such as plastic, metal and wood. I was very impressed with Adam’s work and his passion for saving our planet so now I’ve decided I am going to become an ‘eco-warrior’ too. Although, perhaps I will have to find a different way to spread the word because I take awful pictures!

1. The photographer talked about only one subject. 2. The photographer is worried about how we are damaging our planet. 3. There wasn’t enough time after the talk for the children to ask questions. 4. Adam used the money from his photography to help earthquake victims. 5. Only new matertials are used in the construction of the houses. 6. Andrew wants to be like Adam in the future but thinks his photos aren’t good enough.

Listening Transcripts 1

1 Becky: What happened to your knees, Jack? Did you fall over playing football? Jack: No, it happened yesterday, after school. B: Oh, were you climbing trees again? J: No, not this time! My sister and I were running with the dog and I just tripped and fell over. Luckily nobody saw! 2 Becky: Francesca! How's your holiday? Have you tried zorbing yet? Francesca: No, I haven't, not yet anyway! But I plan on trying as soon as I've done the bungee jump. B: So you haven't tried it yet? F: No, this morning we went white water rafting instead. It was terrifying but incredible. 3 John: Hi Sam, are you ready to meet now? Sam: Nearly! I've just filled out the last page of the summer job application form. J: Oh, OK. Have you looked on the Internet for all the information you need for your project? S: Yes, I've already done that. So, I just have to feed the dog and then I'll come and meet you. J: All right. See you later! 2

Charles: Hi Alfie! How was the competition morning? Alfie: It was amazing, Charles! I can't believe it's only midday and it's already over. I need to show you my medal, I came first in the break dancing round. C: Wow! That's brilliant, Alfie. Congratulations. Are you at home now? A: Yes, we just got back. You're not going to believe what happened when we were driving home. C: Why? What happened? Did you get lost again? A: No, not this time! There was lots of traffic and so that we didn't get stuck my mum decided to go down a different street. C: Yeah… A: But, the problem was that the street was only for pedestrians and as we were driving along the police arrived and stopped us. C: Really? Oh no! A: It was OK though, they understood it was just a mistake. My mum was really embarrassed!

94

C: Well, you've had a much more exciting morning than mine, although I have been busy. A: Oh, right. You’re having a barbecue tonight, aren’t you? Have you been to the supermarket to buy the food? C: Yeah, I did that at 9 o'clock this morning. I bought some cool CD's too. A: Cool. And how does the garden look? C: Great! I've just finished tidying it. It took me 2 hours! A: Wow! Is there anything you want me to do? C: Yeah, can you come over and help me set up the barbecue? The instructions are really complicated. A: No, problem, I'll be over in half an hour. C: Thanks! 3

Ruby: Hello? Chris: Ruby! It’s Chris. How is your new country life? Are you missing the big city yet? R: Chris! How are you?! Country life’s great. Especially the new house. It’s huge! And you don´t have to walk up hundreds of steps to get to it, or take the lift. Remember how tired we used to get walking up all those stairs to our apartments? C: Remember? I’ve just done it! And that’s after going to the swimming pool to train after school! R: Wow! You’re so good. I never used to have the energy to train with you after school when I lived in the city. I always used to go home and watch TV. C: I know! So, what do you do after school now? R: Well, I spend a lot of time outside and I help my parents with the animals on the farm. But do you remember how I really love singing? C: Yeah. You always used to talk about joining a choir. R: Well, there’s a choir in my village so I am going to go there this weekend and hopefully they’ll let me join. They’re really good! C: So are you, Ruby! R: Ah thanks, Chris. Are you still going to your poetry class? C: Yes, on Saturday we have a really important recital actually. And it’s strange, I didn’t use to get nervous about them but now I really do. R: It’s probably because it’s such an important one. But don’t worry. You’ll be brilliant, I’m sure. C: So, Ruby, when are you coming to visit us in the city again?

R: I’m not sure. Why don’t you come to my village instead? C: Well, yeah. Why not? Although, just to visit. Ry: I know! You’re not a country boy! 4

So, I’d like to talk about my local club, which everyone probably expects to be a football or swimming club but I’ve chosen something a bit different. The Spoken Word Club is a really special place where people who are interested in poetry or rap can go to practise. Lots of storytellers come too, which is really cool because that’s something you don’t see much. At the club, teachers or other members help you develop your work and we get to perform too; some people spend hours rehearsing but a lot of the rappers and storytellers just improvise. When we perform at different places the teachers always come and support us and member’s families often come too. It’s amazing. There’s always a great atmosphere. This Saturday we have a really big competition and we’re all excited because last year someone from our group won. Last year they called it Spoken Word War but they decided to change that and now it’s just called Words. The prizes in the competition are fantastic too; last year the winning club got £1000 but this year they're not giving away money, they're giving away a piano. Everyone is really hoping we win again! 5

1 Dad: Hey, James! Shall we try out the new smoothie maker Mum bought? James: Yeah, Dad. Cool. What are you going to put in yours? D: I’m going to try apple, orange and carrot. Do you want the same? J: Sure, sounds good. Oh, but wait a minute. We haven’t got any oranges. D: Mmmm, let me think. Have we got any cucumber? J: I don’t know. I’ll look… Yes, we do. D: Perfect, let’s use cucumber instead. 2 Dad: Sophie! How’s your day been? Sophie: Hello, Dad. It’s been great so far. I have so much more energy now that I’m eating more healthily.

Photocopiable © Santillana Educación, S.L.

D: That’s fantastic news! But you must make sure you eat enough. I saw you had cereal for breakfast but what did you have for lunch? S: Well, I was going to have salad but I had that yesterday so I chose the lentils instead. D: Were they nice? S: Delicious! But not as good as yours of course! 3 Mum: Andrea, have you finished your homework yet? Andrea: No. I've still got so much to do. M: Well, just think, when you’ve finished you can go ice skating with your friends. A: Yeah, but I wish I could be doing something different now. I’d love to go to the lake and paddle my canoe. M: That does sound good but keep studying, these exams are important. A: I know. Erm… Will you bring me a snack and a drink? If I don’t get some more energy I’ll be asleep soon! M: OK, right away! 6

Louis: Hey, Charlie! How are you doing with your homework? Charlie: Oh, I've still got quite a lot to do. How about you? L: Oh, I've already finished studying for the test. I'm going to watch a film now. I was going to ask you if you wanted to watch it with me. C: Ah, thanks Louis but I can't. And if I do finish I feel like doing something more energetic, like playing football. I’ve been sitting down for hours! L: That sounds like a great idea! And now that you mention football, did I tell you what my dad promised to do if I get good marks in the exam? C: Did he say he would buy you a new computer? L: No! He's going to take me to the match next weekend. And he's going to introduce me to the players too! I would love to meet the goalkeeper. C: Wow, that's so cool. Do you still want to be a goalkeeper? L: Yeah. I’ve been thinking about taking up a new sport recently though, to try something different, but I really haven't got time. C: What sport were you thinking about? I think I would start a martial art. L: Yeah, like karate or something. My brother’s just started playing cricket and he loves that but I think it's a bit boring.

Listening Transcripts C: Me too. Anyway, I should carry on with my homework. And you should startwatching that film now, Louis, or it's going to get too late. You have to be up early for the test. L: I know. I'm glad it's tomorrow though because that means after tomorrow I can forget about it! C: Well, I wish I could forget about this homework now but I can’t. Sitting down for so long makes me feel so lazy, I wish I felt more awake. L: Why don’t you have a smoothie? Maybe that will help. C: Yeah, maybe I will. 7

So, let me tell you about the fantastic event I went to last Saturday. It was called Shakepeare from Sunrise to Sunset and it was lots of different Shakespeare plays. But, instead of watching them in the theatre, we watched them like they used to in Shakespeare's time, outside! The plays started at sunrise and finished at sunset and it all took place in City Park. The plays were acted out all over the park and I really admired how hard the actors worked. We spoke to one of them and he said that after each scene they often had to get changed into a different costume because they didn't just have one role in each play. He said that in one play he had six different roles! Because the audience moved around the park to watch the different plays and scenes it meant that sometimes things got a little noisy. During one scene from Hamlet, the peacocks in the area next to us were making so much noise that we had to move away! All the plays were fantastic, I loved Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But if I had to choose my favourite I'd say Romeo and Juliet. I know it's the most obvious one but I love it because it’s a tragic love story. I could watch it over and over again. I think when I grow up I want to be a playwright instead. Just like Shakespeare! 8

Presenter: Hello, Katherine. Welcome to the show. Katherine: Thanks for inviting me! It's great to be here. P: So, you have a new play opening at the Apollo Theatre tonight, but tell us about why you decided to become an actress. Was drama something you loved at school? K: Oh no! I was really bad at drama when I was at school, I'd get very nervous talking in front of people. I remember I once had to give a

presentation in a chemistry class and I was terrified. The only subject I got good marks in was English. I loved reading Shakespeare. P: Well, perhaps that's where it all started then? K: Perhaps. When I left school I still loved reading but I became passionate about other issues too. P: Like what? K: Well, I joined lots of environmental groups and I became really interested in global warming and how we could try and stop it. It's something I am still very involved in now. P: And if I am right, wasn't your first performance in a play about saving the rainforest? K: Yes, it was! It was only a small part but I was very nervous. In fact, when I came off stage somebody gave me a blueberry muffin as a present and I was shaking so much I couldn't hold it. P: And do you still get stage fright? K: A little bit, and I think that's a good thing, it keeps your adrenalin going. In fact, in the last play I did, which was Hamlet, we were performing to a huge audience and it felt like going out on stage for the first time again. P: Is there a role you haven't played yet which you'd love to have a chance to? K: Well, last year I played Shakespeare's Juliet and I thought, wouldn't it be amazing if I could play Romeo. P: Really? K: Yes, I have always loved that character. P: Well, maybe one day! K: Yes, maybe! 9

1 Ben: Hi, we are here to interview Jack Jones. We are from the local school. Guard: Ah yes. Have you filled in all the forms and sent in your photos? Andy: Yes, we sent them yesterday. G: Ah, yes, here they are. Do you have any bags? B: No. G: OK, then I’m just going to ask you to turn off your phones and follow me. A: No problem. Let's go. 2 Jack: Hey guys, welcome! Ben: Thanks, Jack. We’re huge fans. How can we help, can we carry your bag? J: No! That's not necessary. Security can do that. But you can do something for me…

Andy: Anything! Can we get you a drink? J: Well, I am thirsty but I have a better idea. Why don’t we order a pizza? Ben and Andy: Yeah! Fantastic! 3 Jack: Well, today's been great but now it's time for you guys to relax and for me to go and get ready. Ben: Wow, I can't believe it's seven o’clock already. Andy: I know! In an hour your show starts, Jack. Are you nervous? J: Not really. I've had quite a lot of practise. Anyway, I will see you guys again after the show. Let's meet back stage at 10. B: Fantastic! A: Brilliant. See you then, Jack. And good luck! J: Thanks guys! 10

Ben: Are you ready for your interview, Jack? Jack: I think so! Andy: We are really pleased you agreed to do this, Jack. It means a lot to all the kids at our school. Especially because it used to be your school too! J: That's right. I have some great memories from those days, and some not so good too. I remember the teachers back then were quite strict and sometimes my behaviour wasn’t the best! B: Did you get in trouble then? J: Not really. I was a good kid most of the time. But there was no music department back then and that was all I was interested in so I got a little bored sometimes. B: And, is it true that last time you came back to visit the school you got a strange request from someone? J: That’s right. I had come to see the end of year play and I was watching it when a boy came over and tapped me on the shoulder. B: And what did he say? Was he a fan? J: Yes, he was and I thought he was going to ask for my autograph but instead he told me a crazy story about how his dog had eaten his homework and how he was going to get in trouble if he didn’t hand it in. B: So, what did he want you to do? J: Write his essay for him! B: How cheeky! A: So, Jack, tell us about your latest project. You’re starring in a film, is that right? J: No, no, no. Acting really isn’t my thing but I am involved in a film. The director is a very good friend

of mine and he asked me to do the soundtrack and of course, I said yes! B: Fantastic! You must be tired though, you always seem to be working. J: Tell me about it! Although I did get a day off last week and I spent it sleeping. But to be honest, I love my job so much that I don't mind. I get to travel the world, meet amazing people and make music. And when I do eventually have time to take a holiday I know what I'll be doing… writing a new album! B: Well, we can't wait to hear it! A: Thanks, Jack! 11

It’s that time of year again and here at Arthur’s Manor we are getting ready to host our annual Murder Mystery event. On Saturday preparations at the Manor will begin ready for guests to arrive on Sunday. I love all the preparation that goes into the event and I especially love telling the guests what characters they'll be playing. There's such a variety of roles now, you might get to be a good guy, like a police officer or a Crime Scene Investigator. Or, you might end up on the wrong side of the law and have to play a burglar or even a murderer! At last year's event, the main criminals involved in the crime played their roles so well that none of them were caught! They left no clues and performed brillliantly in the police interviews. Nobody could believe it was them. This meant they walked away with the prize, which is normally money but last year was a car. We've decided to make a couple of changes to the event this year too. For example, there'll be a magician performing tricks before our fabulous gala dinner which is now going to be in the ballroom. It's all very exciting! 12

Sheila: How was work today, Sam? Sam: It was a bit stressful to be honest. Sometimes I wonder if I chose the right career. Sh: But you always wanted to be a Crime Scene Investigator, didn’'t you? S: Actually, not always. When I was little both me and my sister wanted to be detectives. Sh: Was that because of your obsession with Sherlock Holmes? S: Probably! I’m sure Sherlock Holmes never had to wait around for hours to get access to crime scene. I get so bored and frustrated just sitting there doing nothing. It’s definitely my least favourite thing.

95

Listening Transcripts Sh: And is that what happened today? S: Well, no, today we were actually really busy and I was stressed because it was sort of my fault. Do you remember the burglary we photographed last week? Sh: Yes, of course. S: Well, they found some hair at the scene and sent it off for analysis and it turns out it wasn’t our suspect’s hair. It was mine! It must have fallen out before I put my cap on. My boss went mad! Sh: Oh no! Well, mistakes happen. S: Yeah, I suppose so but that’s the second mistake of mine. Last year, I left a fingerprint on the window after another break in. Sh: Yes, but that was your sister’s house! Your fingerprints would have been everywhere anyway! They should never have sent you to photograph it. S: Yeah, I suppose so. Sh: Anyway, if you aren’t enjoying your job at the moment why don’t you start studying again. Maybe change? S: That’s a good idea. I always wanted to be more involved in the forensic department so I think that's something I should start looking into for next year. 13

1 Alex: So, Elizabeth… Have you got any interesting news for the school magazine this week? James: I heard they were trying to ban cars in your area, is that true? Elizabeth: Not exactly. But they are trying to make some changes. You can only drive down certain streets now. To reduce noise pollution. A: Ah, OK. What other changes do they want to make? E: Well, we have new recycling bins for glass bottles. And, all the local shops have been told they can't use plastic bags anymore. They must be paper. J: Wow, that's great! 2 Alex: OK, so we've got Elizabeth’s story and how about you James, what have you written about this week? James: The hurricane, of course! It was the worst storm we’ve seen in years. Elizabeth: Where were you during the hurricane, Alex? A: I was here at school, in class. J: Yeah, me too. But my story’s going to be about the children who were out sailing when it started. They had to be saved by the coastguard.

96

E: OK. And maybe we could write a simple explanation about greenhouse gases, pollution and global warming to help people understand how this changes our weather. 3 Alex: And finally, is there anything else we should include in this week’s edition? Elizabeth: Well, I think it would be really lovely to write about what happened to Florence this week. James: Why, what happened? I thought she lost her school bag. E: She did. And she was really upset because her purse was in it. She thought she’d never get it back. A: But then, a total stranger arrived at her door and handed it to her. He said he'd found it in the park next to an old coat. J: But the school bag never showed up? That’s weird. E: Yeah… 14

Hi, my name's Gemma and I'm going to tell you a little bit about our new project. It’s called Save the Future. We are a group of students from a college in Lancaster who really care about our world and want to make sure it still exists for our children and grandchildren. We are starting by organising recycling points throughout the city and we aim collect 500 tonnes of plastic by Christmas. Only 200 were collected last year so we are going to have to work hard. Things you can recycle include bottles, containers and all kinds of packaging. We don't have permission to collect mobiles phones yet but hopefully we will soon. We hope that the local government will see the great work we are doing and offer us some support, we don't want to ask local businesses for money. On Saturday we are organising a huge party to promote our project. We want to show how important recycling is. We aren't just going to stop there though. Our future projects are going to include saving rainforests and endangered species. We’re going to be very busy I think! 15

Presenter: Hi, Andrew, thanks for joining us today on Student Focus. Andrew: No problem! I was really excited to be asked! P: So, you are a law student and an active member of a lot of local clubs. What inspires you?

A: Well, to be honest, there are so many people who inspire me that it would be difficult to pick just one. Right now, I've been reading a lot about Alfred Nobel, I find him a very interesting character and of course, Nelson Mandela is someone I really look up to. But when I was a child, my mum gave me a book about Martin Luther King and I just thought he was amazing. P: And he became your inspiration? A: He became my hero, yes. P: And why did you decide to study law? A: Well, there are the obvious reasons, like being paid well and being respected but I don't really care about that. I want to be able to protect people who need my help. So my aim is to focus on law for human rights purposes. P: And how’s the studying going? A: Pretty well I think. I’m a very organised person and I always feel very disappointed in myself if I don’t stick to the study timetable I’ve planned out. My friends sometimes laugh athow strict I am at following the timetable but I always tell them that’s how I am going to pass my exams! P: Have you thought about what might happen if you don’t? Would you feel very depressed? A: Oh, don’t say that! I think I would be really embarrassed actually, because I’ve always been so confident about passing! P: Well, I’m sure you won’t have any problems. And finally, future plans. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? A: Well, I will have finished studying at university by then so hopefully I will be able to travel a bit. But one thing I know for sure is that whether I am travelling or studying or working I don’t ever want to stop finding out new things. There’s so much out there to learn and it’s important to never stop. P: Thanks Andrew, it’s been a pleasure. 16

Jane: This year’s project was great, wasn’t it Karen? Karen: Yeah, I really enjoyed it. And I felt like I learnt so much because before we started I didn’t know much about apartheid. J: Well, at least you knew something. I knew absolutely nothing about it. I found it really shocking. K: Me too. Another project that I thought was amazing but just as shocking was the one someone did about civil rights.

Photocopiable © Santillana Educación, S.L.

J: Yeah, that was fascinating. And I like the way this year we weren’t all given the same subject matter. It made the presentations much more interesting because there was a variety. K: I agree. And the fact that we were given contacts outside the UK to call and write to so that they could answer our questions made the project content seem more real too. J: Yeah, that was a great idea from Mrs. Goodman. And she took it very seriously, you had to contact them or she got really cross. K: I know! Thank goodness for computers. It would have been very expensive and taken ages if we weren’t allowed to use them. J: Do you want to visit South Africa? K: Yes, I do. But if I went, I’d want to write about it. See how it’s changed. How about you? J: I’m not sure. I think if I went I’d feel a little depressed but that doesn’t mean I definitely won’t go. You never know, I might come with you!

3. The first player to reach Finish is the winner.

Listen and sing.

Ask the children to look at the illustrations and describe what Santa is doing. Ask What’s Santa’s problem? What does he have to do about it? Play Track 17 and ask them to sing along. Elicit or explain any unfamiliar vocabulary. Divide the class into four groups. Assign a verse for each group to make up dance movements to accompany it. Play the song and have the groups sing their verses and do the accompanying dance routine for the class.

2 Match the jokes with the punchlines. Explain what a cracker is: a special Christmas package with a funny hat, a toy and a joke inside. When the ends of the cracker are pulled apart, they explode and make a “crack”. Crackers are traditionally opened while celebrating Christmas dinner. Crackers are popular in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Explain that when a joke is in question-and-answer form, the answer is called the punchline. Tell the children to work in pairs to read the jokes and match them with their punchlines. Invite some pairs to read the jokes, and then check answers as a class.

3 Play The Christmas Game.

After groups have finished playing, discuss the answers to the questions as a class.

4

Do the Christmas word search. Children find and circle as many words as they can that are related to Christmas. Give them a time limit of five minutes. When time is up, elicit the words and check answers as a class. Answers Across: turkey, Santa, angel, bells, present. Down: tree, reindeer, candle, snow, star

5 Make a Christmas tree decoration. Materials: markers or brightly coloured paints, brushes, glitter. Preparation: Cut one length of ribbon or string in a bright colour (approx. 24 cm long, 1 per child). Tell the children to cut out and colour the template. Explain that the tabs should not be coloured, since they will be folded back. When they have finished, children fold back the tabs and glue them together to make the shape. Tell them to decorate it using glue and glitter, thread the ribbon or string through the two holes and tie it.

Materials: counters, 1 coin for every 4 children Ask the children to form groups of four. Distribute the coins, to be used as dice, and the counters. Explain the rules of the game: 1. Children place their counters on Start. They take turns flipping the coin and moving their counters across the board (heads = move forward one space; tails = move forward two spaces). 2. If the children are able to answer the question on the square, they can stay there. If they are unable to answer, they must move their counter back to the square they were on before flipping the coin.

Listen and sing.

There’s trouble at the North Pole. Santa’s in a fix. He’s had too many biscuits and his clothes don’t fit! We can’t have Santa flying through the night, If his trousers don’t fit and his jacket’s too tight! So Santa’s on a diet, and he’s really sad. And it’s all because of all the cakes and sweets he’s had. But we can’t have Santa flying east and west, If his jacket doesn’t fit and he’s flying in his vest! So Santa’s at the gym, and he doesn’t like that, He’s only got two days, and he’s still too fat. But we can’t have Santa flying through the air, If his clothes don’t fit and he’s in his underwear! Two days later and Santa’s looking thinner, No more biscuits and he’s feeling much slimmer. Because we can’t have Santa out on Christmas night, If his trousers don’t fit and his jacket’s too tight!

2 Match the jokes with the punchlines. 1

What do snowmen eat for breakfast?

2

What does Santa’s cat want for Christmas?

3

What do you call Santa’s dog?

4

What goes “Oh, oh, oh!”?

Santa talking backwards!

5

What do monkeys sing at Christmas?

Snowflakes!

6

What do you call an old snowman?

7

How does a snowman lose weight?

Some new claus (claws)!

Water! Jungle bells, jungle bells!

He waits for the weather to get warmer! Santa Paws!

Listen and complete the poem.

Play Track 18 and tell the children to listen and complete the poem. Divide the class into two groups. Groups take turns reciting lines of the poem, with the whole class reciting the last line of each verse. Focus on stress and intonation as they recite. Answers 1. smile 4. dance 2. move 5. walk 3. laugh 6. look

• Complete your own Valentine’s Day poem. Ask the children to think of verbs to complete the poem. Encourage them to choose silly verbs to make their poems as funny as possible. When they are ready, tell the children to work in groups and to take turns reciting their poems. Ask for volunteers to recite their funny poems to the class.

2 Find and circle the name in the acrostic poem. Tell the children to read the acrostic. Elicit or explain unfamiliar vocabulary. Then, explain that an acrostic uses a person’s name vertically, either as the first letter of each line or hidden vertically in the poem. Tell them to look at the acrostic more carefully to discover the name. Answer: Chrisy

102

• Write a Valentine’s Day acrostic poem and make a card. Materials: card (pink, red or white, 1 sheet per child), scissors, magazines, newspapers or sales flyers, glue Explain that we can give Valentine’s Day cards to friends or to family, not just to the people we are romantically interested in and tell the children to choose a person. Tell them to write the name vertically in their notebooks, and write words and phrases related to the person horizontally. Distribute the materials. Children search for the necessary letters, cut them out and glue them in place to make the acrostic card.

3 Make a Valentine’s Day jigsaw puzzle. Materials: felt tip pens, envelopes (1 per child) Tell the children to cut out the template, and write a Valentine’s Day message or poem to a friend. Read the example poem with the class. Encourage them to write original messages or poems. Children write their poem, colour the hearts border and finish by decorating it with personal touches. Distribute the envelopes. Children write the name of their Valentine on the outside, cut out the pieces, and put them in the envelope. Children work in pairs to solve each other’s puzzles and read the messages.

3 Make an Easter Quiz. Preparation: Tell the children to research the history of Easter and different Easter Traditions before the class. Tell them to write down five Easter facts. Tell the children to work in four groups. Each group prepares a ten question multiple choice Easter quiz, using the facts they have researched beforehand. When they have finished, hold a class quiz.

4 Make an Easter Noughts and Crosses game.

Tell the children to look at the photo and ask what game the boys are playing. Elicit the rules: Players choose to be X or O and take turns drawing in squares of a 3 x 3 grid. Sally Brown has been an architect for 10 years. She’s an architect, but she doesn’t build houses. She specialises in public buildings like hospitals and shopping centres. Her first building was a small shopping centre in Leeds, and since then she’s built three more shopping centres and two bridges. At the moment she’s designing a shopping centre in a small town in north Wales. She’s very tired because they are behind schedule, so she has been working seven days a week and at night, too. 21

1 Girl: Have you ever eaten insects? Boy: Yes, I have! G: No way! When did you try them? B: Last year. I ate some crickets in a restaurant in Mexico City. 2 Man: Have you ever run a marathon? Woman: No, I haven’t. But last summer I was training for one when I fell and broke my leg. 3 Woman: Have you ever entered a race? Man: Oh, no, but I have some friends who have run the North Pole Marathon. I met them while I was jogging in the park. 22

1 I used to have long hair, but now I have short hair. 2 I used to go to school, but now I go to the office. 3 I used to ride a bike, but now I ride a motorbike. 4 I used to go on holiday to the beach, but now I go to the mountains. 5 People used to listen to the radio, but now they watch TV. 6 People used to cook on fires, but now they use an oven. 23

Presenter: Good afternoon and welcome to What would you do if…? The show where the winner has to say the most popular answer! Our first contestant is Susan from Southampton. Hello, Susan! Susan: Hi, Bob. P: OK, here’s the question. Susan, what would you do if you won £100,000? S: Mmm. I would buy a small house. P: OK. Thank you, Susan. Now… Barry from Bradford! Barry: I would buy a sports car. I love sports cars! P: Ah! Thank you, Barry. Now… Larry from London. What would you do? Larry: I would travel around the world! P: OK! Good answers! And lastly, Debbie from Doncaster! Debbie: I would give the money to charity. P: Now… let’s see which was the most popular answer from our audience. And the winner is Susan! Most people in the audience would also buy a house! 24

Mum: Hello? Johnny: Hi, Mum! M: Is that you, Johnny? How are you? Is everything OK? I can’t hear you very well… J: I can hear you OK. Everything’s great, Mum! Everyone is really friendly, and the hotel is amazing! I’m staying in a really nice room. M: Oh... are you? J: You know? What they say about Chicago is true! It’s windy here! M: Er… really? It’s still Tuesday here. J: What? Um, Mum, I want to ask you something. Can you... um… can you send me some money? M: Well... I suppose so. J: Thanks, Mum! Don’t worry about me, all right? I have to go! M: But, Johnny... Johnny? Oh, dear!

Presenter: Good afternoon and welcome to What’s my job? Our contestant today is going todescribe what she does. Can you guess her job? Lucy, are you ready? Lucy: Yes! Well, I get up at six o’clock and have a shower. Then, I make breakfast. I eat cereal and I drink coffee. Then I cycle to work and arrive at work at about 9.15. There’s always a lot of noise where I work. We start at 9.30 and I call a list of names to see if everyone is here. Then I ask everyone for their homework. We have two classes and then it’s time for break. Lunch is at one o’clock and we go home at five. I always have a lot of marking to do at home. What’s my job? P: So… Can you guess? What’s Lucy’s job? 26

Police Sergeant: All right, ma’am, let’s start from the beginning. Woman: Well, I got back from my trip this morning. PS: How long had you been away? W: Only one night. I left yesterday morning at 10 and I got home today at 9 am. PS: So what did you notice first? W: I noticed that the front door was unlocked. I had definitely locked it before I left! I immediately went to the living room, where my safe is, and I saw that it had been opened. They had taken all my money, my jewels, my coin collection, everything! PS: Thank you ma’am. PS: OK. I’ve interviewed the victim... Let’s look at the files of three possible suspects. PO: OK, Sarge. It might be John Smith. He has the most experience cracking safes. PS: Yes, but we found fingerprints on the front door and the safe, and they don’t match John Smith’s. He can’t be the burglar. What about the other two? PO: Their fingerprints aren’t on record, but both of them have a motive. Ned Tate has a history of stealing art objects, so he might want the coin collection. And we know Gerald Jones sells stolen jewels. It must be one of them. PS: But Gerald Jones is in Middle County Prison! PO: Of course he is! We have a chief suspect, Sarge! 27

Presenter: Now, on to our next interview. Here’s Macy Jones, who is an expert on the environment. Hello Macy, and welcome to the show. Tell us, what can we do to help the Earth? Macy: Well, for starters, we all should walk or ride our bikes as much as possible. Too many people drive their cars just to go a short distance, and it’s really bad for the environment! P: OK! What else? M: Well, we should always recycle. We produce so much rubbish, and a lot of it ends up in the ocean, especially plastic. The plastic is eaten by fish and other sea animals, and thousands die. P: OK, so, limit our use of plastic... and then what? M: There isn’t always enough water for everyone on the planet, so remember not to use too much of it! At home, always turn the taps off and save water whenever you can. P: OK. I know you have lots more ideas, Macy, but there isn’t enough time to talk about them! Thank you so much for coming... And now here’s David with the weather… 28

Charlie: What are your plans for the summer holidays Karen? Karen: Well, I’ll stay with my grandma and I’ll go to the beach because she lives on the south coast. I might do some windsurfing and I might go swimming. I definitely won’t study at all and I won’t use my computer, but I will use my mobile phone to keep in touch with my friends. What about you? C: I’ll be in France, learning to speak French! I’ll be fluent when I get back. I’ll stay with a French family in the south of France. I might go to the beach, too but I won’t go wind surfing, I don’t like it. I might play volleyball on the beach, that’s my favourite sport. K: Sounds great. See you in September!
