A. Fill in: mind, grabs, menaced, struggle, bait, kneels, seabed, drifts away. The Shark Charmer

Cristina Zenato 1) Kneels on the 2) Seabed holding a single fish as 3) Bait As she waits, the sharks move in and swim closer. They surround her. You might think she is out of her 4) Mind, but wait and watch. One shark moves in and 5) Grabs the fish. Feeding a shark, though, is nothing compared to what happens next. She brings the shark up close; it doesn’t 6) Struggle and Cristina isn’t 7 ) Menaced by it at all. Cristina strokes it around the nose. The shark is now in a state of ‘tonic immobility’ – something like a hypnotic trance. She lifts it up until it’s balanced on her hand and holds it there. After a second or two, the shark wakes and 8) Drift away without once looking back. It’s an impressive sight. Watch Cristina on YouTube as she charms Caribbean Reef sharks and raises awareness of shark conservation.

B. Fill in: wave, manipulate, release, simulate, rip, scrub, strap, trap in the correct form. 1 Stuart is able to Manipulate the sharks into doing whatever he wants. 2 The director shouted “action” and the handlers release the sharks. 3 Stuart freed one of the sharks that had become trapped in the correct form in a net. 4 Shark handlers can fake shark attacks by scrubing food to themselves. 5 I was strap the plate as hard as I could, but the dried egg wouldn’t come off.

6 A shark’s teeth can easily rip through a wetsuit. 7 She wave her hands around in order to attract his attention. 8 It’s Stuart Cove’s job to simulate shark attacks for the cameras.

C. Fill in: fussy, budget, money, mistake, deep, fortune. 1 2 3 4 5 6

Stuart Cove makes a pile of money from shark handling. Contrary to popular opinion, sharks are quite fussy eaters. Some people will do anything for fame and fortune. When a shark bites, the teeth go deep into the flesh. The film can’t afford expensive actors due to the small budget. If a shark bites a diver in a wetsuit, it realizes its mistake and lets go.
