TRIMESTRAL TEACHER GUIDE (NAIROBI)

AGATA LISOWSKA

1

How to use this guide Dear Vaughan Teacher, We’ve written this teacher guide for you to help you organize and execute your trimestral courses. The point of these guides is that we provide you with as much material as possible so that you can go into the classroom and focus on doing your absolute best as a teacher with minimal planning stresses. To fully take advantage of this and to makes sure you cover all of the material necessary for each course, there are 5 steps you should follow…

The Vaughan Team

AGATA LISOWSKA

2

STEP ONE – identify length of course

AGATA LISOWSKA

3

COURSE START DATES The student books are not divided by weeks so you’ll have to make sure you divide the units up into however many weeks your course is, to do this…identify how long AGATA LISOWSKA

4

your course is by following the chart on the previous page (day of the week  month  number (day)….) FYI - The teacher guides are automatically divided up for 11/12 week courses

STEP TWO – divide units Now that you know the length of your course, look at this chart below to know how many units to cover per week. This chart should be strictly followed, especially for the sake of teacher substitutions.

12 wk course • Cover 4 units per week (44 units = 11 wks) • Last class is review class

11 wk course • Cover 4 units per week (44 units = 11 weeks) • NO review class

10 wk course

9 wk course

8 wk course

• Cover 4 units per week, except last 4 classes (cover 5 units each wk) • NO review class

• Cover 4 units in the 1st week, 5 units in every week following. • NO review class

• Cover 5 units per week in the 1st four weeks and 6 units per week in the last 4 weeks. • NO review class

The number of units you cover per week is regardless of the length of the classes (2 hrs per wk; 2.5 hrs per wk; 3 hrs per wk; 4 hrs per wk; etc). If you are teaching only 2 or 2.5 hours per week, it’s okay if you don’t get to cover absolutely everything in the book. The important part is that you stick to the number of units per week.

STEP THREE– assess level 

IMPORTANT: These books are very different from the old trimestral books we had, new Book 1 is much tougher than old Book 1; new Book 14 is at a similar level to old book 23, etc.

Get the student book in front of you, have a look through the whole thing.

Identify if they’ve started covering the “past simple”, “present perfect” or conditionals, etc. or any main grammar points that can help you assess where your students will be at level-wise.

Look at the index, this will also help you grasp what your students will be learning throughout the course.

STEP FOUR– write drills 

Since this is a new course, there are still many teacher guides that need drills written. As you will see, each unit has more than one point (some of the points are either common mistakes, main grammar points, expressions, basics, etc.). We have divided up the material in these guides so it’s a little more clear to you when to cover certain points in your lesson plan (e.g. if one of the points in a unit is a vocabulary list, than the vocabulary list should be taught in the “vocabulary” slot which is towards the beginning of our skeleton lesson plans.

The type of drill needed is specified in this guide in each unit but if not try to vary the type of drills (don’t always make them “full answer” drills, you can get inspiration from tricks-for-teaching or the teacher manual to see how to vary your drills).

You’ll find that if you need to write a drill, it’ll be highlighted in yellow identifying how many questions should be written, for example… DRILL (15-20 Q’s)

TIP: There may be drills on file that already work for the point you’re going to cover. You can go to the internal teacher server and search according to what grammar point you’re covering or look in the Vaughan Teacher Manual.

STEP FIVE– fill in the skeleton 

Have a look at the skeleton’s we’ve provided on the following pages. These base lesson plans should look just like what you’ve seen in training. You will see that there are slots provided where you should insert different things, including specific slots for 4 different units that should be covered every week.

It’s vital to understand that one UNIT does not equal one grammar point. Sometimes there are 2, 3 or even 4 different points per UNIT. However, not all points in the units are grammar points…some are basics, or expressions, or common mistakes, etc. Therefore, when you use the lesson plan skeleton provided, it’s up to you to choose the most important point in the unit to treat as a Main Grammar Point to put into the slots allotted for UNITS 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the lesson plans. The rest of the points in the units should be treated as high-paced drills or fillers and

AGATA LISOWSKA

7

should still be included in your lesson plans.

Make it dynamic! At the end of the day, you’re the expert, so if you feel the need to switch around the placement of certain fillers and highpaced drills in your lesson plans to keep them dynamic, than go for it. Follow your gut!

Example of lesson plan skeleton…

Teacher: I’m not feeling well, I’m going home. Student: Hope you feel better soon. 2.) T: I think I have a stomach virus. S: Get well soon! 3.) T: I have a terrible toothache. 4.) However, here “…two-year old…” acts as an adjective (and they should know by now that adjectives can never be plural). This unit covers different types of compound adjectives such as “eight-hour flight” and “ten-minute drive”. Get your students to rephrase… 1.) Teacher: A house that has three bedrooms. Student: A three-bedroom house. 2.) T: A car with 3 doors. S: A three-door car. 3.) T: A report with 20 pages. S: A twenty-page report. 4.) T: A delay of 4 minutes. S: A four-minute delay. 5.) T: A pause of 3 seconds. S: A three-second pause. 6.) T: A course that lasts 6 weeks. S: A six-week course. 7.) T: A contract that lasts 2 years. S: A two-year contract. 8.) T: A break that lasts 10 minutes. S: A ten-minute break. 9.) T: A building with 12 stories. S: A twelve-story building. 10.) T: A car with 5 doors. S: A five-door car. 11.) T: A boy who is 6 years old. S: A six-year old boy. 12.) T: A train journey that lasts 4 hours. S: A four-hour train journey. 13.) T: A meeting that lasts 3 hours. S: A three-hour meeting. 14.) T: A house that has 5 bedrooms. S: A five-bedroom house. 15.) T. A book that has 200 pages. S: A two hundred-page book.
