nd indeed, America’s pastime is embedded in our culture: We refer to a success as a “home run,” a commanding and capable person as a “heavy hitter,” and top-level performance as “big league.” So it’s no surprise that baseball-themed stamps have appeared time and time again. And with Major League Baseball™ All-Stars, the Postal Service is excited to honor four Hall of Famers with an all-star lineup of stamps and stamp products. Not only are we issuing panes of stamps highlighting all four players — Joe DiMaggio, Willie Stargell, Ted Williams, and Larry Doby — but to add to the excitement, we’re also offering panes in limited quantities showcasing each all-star individually. On July 20, panes of 20 stamps featuring all four players will go on sale with a First Day Ceremony at the Baseball Hall of Fame™ in Cooperstown, New York. The following day, panes honoring each individual legend will be issued at First Day Ceremonies in New York City (Joe DiMaggio), Cleveland (Larry Doby), Pittsburgh (Willie Stargell), and Boston (Ted Williams). We have a limited quantity of individual player stamp sheets ready to fill all preorders for shipment on July 21 — with these orders getting top priority. See page 4 for a complete listing of individual player products, or visit www.usps. com/play-ball. Orders received for individual player stamp sheets will be accepted and honored through August 31, 2012, even if it requires additional printing. In addition, the Postal Service has made the unprecedented decision to offer uncut press sheets without die cuts or perfing. For a dramatic addition to your personal Hall of Fame, we suggest that you frame one of these striking press sheets, available for both the mixed and individual player panes. Finally, to provide every fan with a variety of options, we’ve produced First Day of Issue and special dedication postmarks for each individual player. Even this catalog was printed with four unique covers. These four legendary players capture our imagination for their exploits and for what they symbolize — the best of baseball, and in a way, the best of ourselves. We hope you agree that art director Phil Jordan and illustrator Kadir Nelson hit this one out of the park!

aseball is America’s pastime, the quintessential American sport. It’s no wonder, then, that the Postal Service has honored more baseball players than all other athletes combined. But while the public may not be surprised to see new baseball stamps, they may be surprised to learn that some of the most admired baseball players had not yet appeared in this iconic American medium. Voted onto numerous All-Star teams during their careers and into the National Baseball Hall of Fame after their retirement, these four legends — Joe DiMaggio, Larry Doby, Willie Stargell, and Ted Williams — are now also honored with the Major League Baseball All-Stars stamps. “These hitters symbolize some of the greatest achievements in baseball history,” says Jean Picker Firstenberg, chair of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee and avid Los Angeles Dodgers™ fan. Art director Phil Jordan is also excited about the release. His love of the sport has already been seen in Legends of Baseball (2000), Baseball’s Legendary Playing Fields (2001), and Baseball Sluggers (2006). But this new issuance has special meaning to him: When he was a high school student growing up in New Bern, North Carolina, he met Ted Williams. Recalled to active duty at the beginning of the Korean War, the baseball star was stationed at a nearby Marine base. During his stay, Williams visited the New Bern High School baseball team to give some pointers. “I held the door open for him once,” Jordan recalls. “It is a very nice memory.” For this new project, Jordan worked with artist Kadir Nelson, whose stunning illustrations are also found on the 2009 Richard Wright and Anna Julia Cooper stamps, as well as on the 2010 Negro Leagues Baseball issuance. That diptych depicts the gestures and chaos of a play at home plate and the proud

countenance of the leagues’ founder, Rube Foster. For Major League Baseball All-Stars, Nelson aimed to combine both movement and expression in each individual image. “The primary focus was to try to capture the action as well as come in close enough for a likeness that works in a small image,” he explains. “We started with Williams and his big swing," Jordan adds, "and that determined where we went from there. I determined the close-up approach. I felt like we could get better recognition if we didn’t try to include the entire body in the stamp.” The cropped images could lead to some confusion among less astute baseball fans, though. Doby, Stargell, and Williams were all left-handed batters, and at a quick glance, DiMaggio could be mistaken for a lefty, too. “When you crop DiMaggio’s feet, it increases the impression that he is starting his swing rather than finishing it. But look at where his hands are on the bat,” Jordan points out. “He is looking up in the air, so he can’t be looking for an incoming pitch. His eyes are focused on the ball he just hit.” Anticipating that the stamps will be popular among customers, baseball fans, and stamp collectors alike, the Postal Service will, in a rare occurrence, offer four individual panes in addition to the pane featuring all four players. And of specific interest to collectors, the Postal Service will release uncut press sheets that are imperforate — a first for this product. Major League Baseball All-Stars was clearly created by people who love the game. Jordan, who has worked on more than 70 issuances for the Postal Service, sounds like a star-struck fan when he talks about them — and he even has a favorite. “I especially love the one of Stargell,” he reveals. “For me, that makes the issue.”

THE CIVILWAR

1861 A Nation Touched with Fire

The American people and the Government at Washington may refuse to recognize it for a time; but the “inexorable logic of events” will force it upon them in the end; that the war now being waged in this land is a war for and against slavery.

“I THINK THE ARTIST HAS TO BE SOMETHING LIKE A WHALE, SWIMMING WITH HIS MOUTH WIDE OPEN, ABSORBING EVERYTHING UNTIL HE HAS WHAT HE REALLY NEEDS.” —ROMARE BEARDEN

R

omare Bearden was one of the 20th century’s most distinguished American artists. He is celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to collage along with his work in watercolors, oils, and other media. His work is in the

permanent collections of major museums across the nation. In general, Bearden’s art eloquently expresses universal human themes, embracing the rich complexities of the African-American experience while framing them within a broad historical and cultural context. Using various materials, including cut papers, foil, and fabrics, he transformed collage into a forceful means of expression with mainstream appeal. He sometimes manipulated surfaces with materials such as bleach, sandpaper, or erasers. Bearden was a prolific and versatile artist. His multifaceted body of work also included designs for album covers, costumes, and stage sets. He was a respected scholar who wrote numerous essays and reviews, as well as several major books, among them A History of African-American Artists: From 1792 to the Present (with Harry Henderson). Bearden did much to support the careers of other black artists. He joined with associates in 1969 to open a gallery, Cinque (named for the leader of the revolt on the slave ship Amistad), where many young artists were given their fi rst exhibitions. In his journal, Bearden described art as “a kind of divine play.”

September 2, 1911: Born in Charlotte, NC 1935: Earns degree in education from New York University; begins career as social worker 1940: Bearden’s paintings and drawings are shown at his first solo exhibition 1942-1945: Serves in the U.S. Army during World War II 1951: Co-founds Bluebird Music Company and begins writing song lyrics (“Seabreeze” later becomes a hit) 1963: Helps form Spiral Group, in which artists address social issues 1969: Retires from social work and begins working full-time as an artist 1971: The Block, a giant collage representing a city block, exhibited at Museum of Modern Art 1987: Receives the National Medal of Arts at the White House March 12, 1988: Dies in New York City

D | Celebrating Lunar New Year: Year of the Rabbit E | Bicycling Each of these four stamps depicts a different kind of bike and rider: a young child just learning to ride, a commuter pedaling to work, a road racer intent on the finish line, and an airborne BMX racer.

For the fourth stamp in the Celebrating Lunar New Year series, artist Kam Mak depicted kumquats, which are often given as gifts and eaten for luck at Lunar New Year festivities. usap.co/kumquats
