UNIT 6 - THE WIND INSTRUMENTS (II)

1. Double-reed instruments: Remember: a reed is a tall plant like grass that grows in or near water. In music, it’s a small thin piece of cane, metal or plastic in some musical instruments such as the oboe or the clarinet that moves very quickly when air is blown over it, producing a sound.  The oboe: in comparison to other modern woodwind instruments, the oboe has a clear and penetrating voice. The oboe’s sound depends mostly on its reed. Most professional oboists make their own reeds. The body of oboes is made of African wood. Their key system has 45 pieces of keywork. These keys are usually made of nickel silver, and are silver or occasionally gold-plated. The baroque oboe first appeared in the in the mid-17th century, where it was called hautbois. The musician who plays the oboe is called oboist. There are some types of oboes; the most widely known today is the cor anglais, or English horn, the tenor member of the family. 

The bassoon: is a large bass woodwind instrument of the oboe family, played with a double reed. It is shaped like a large wooden tube with a double reed that you blow into, and produces notes with a low sound.
