Summary Chapter 1: A Strange man Sherlock Holmes met Alexander Holder, a banker who had a problem. He was very altered. Holder told Holmes his story: “He was in his office when a member of the royal family took fifty thousand pounds in exchange for the Emerald Crown for six days. Holder mustn’t take the crown out of the bank or tell friends or family about it. But he took the crown to his house, then he put it in his desk and he saw a man in the garden through the window that, when he saw Holder, ran away moving one of his legs strangely”. Chapter 2: Holder’s story “Holder didn’t find the strange man. He told Holmes and Watson about his family: Arthur, his son; Mary, his niece, and Lucy, the maid. Holder’s wife died years ago. Arthur likes to go to a club to play cards and win money, but he often loses. Holder and Arthur know Burnwell, a rich man that also goes to the club, and has sinister eyes. Lucy is so beautiful that she has many admirers. One day, Arthur asked Mary to marry him, and she said no. At the dinner time, Lucy brought coffee for Arthur, Mary and Alexander. Holder told Arthur and Mary about the emerald crown, while Lucy was out of the room. Later, Arthur asked Holder to borrow so much money from him, but holder said no, and Arthur got angry. Chapter 3: In the night “Holder looked in all the rooms of the house and looked in his desk. The emerald crow was safe. He went downstairs and saw Mary next to an open window and she closed it quickly. She said that she saw Lucy out of the house with one admirer. Then Holder went to sleep, but at two o’clock, he heard a strange noise. He went to see, and he surprised Arthur with the emerald crown in his hands in Holder’s office. He shoutedArthur! What are you doing with the crown? You thief, you thief!- , and the crown fell from his hands. Arthur said that he didn’t want to break it. Three emeralds were missing from the crown. Holder gave Arthur to the police and they went in search for the emeralds in the house. In the police station, the leader gave him Sherlock Holmes’s address”. Chapter 4: The house in Streatham They went to Holder’s house. When they arrived, Holder and Watson, went into the house, but Holmes went to the stable lane to investigate. Holder and Watson met Mary. Then Holmes came in and talked with Mary. He knew that Francis Prosper was Lucy’s admirer, and he has a false leg. Then everyone went to the office and took out the Emerald Crown. Holmes tried to break a corner again, but he couldn’t. It demonstrates that gold don’t breaks easily and it makes a loud noise when it breaks. “But in the last night Holder didn’t heard a loud noise”.

Chapter 5: You are near the end of your trouble Holmes and Watson went back to their house. Holmes change clothes and went out without Watson. Three hours later Holmes returned. He gave Watson a black shoe. He changed clothes to his classic clothes. He went out again, but he returned very late. At nine Holder came to the house. Holmes showed him the corner of the crown with the three emeralds and began telling Holder the story. Chapter 6: All in the day’s work Before telling, Holmes said that Mary and Burnwell are lovers, and that he is a thief. Mary loved Burnwell, and fell into his control. “This is what happened: On last night, Mary met Burnwell at the window and she told him about the Emerald Crown, and Burnwell asked her to steal it, and she said yes. Then, when Holder came, Mary closed the window. Then Arthur asked Holder for money, but he said no. After that, Arthur went to sleep, but he awakened and went downstairs. There he saw Mary who was taking the crown. She ran outside and Arthur followed her. At the stable lane, Mary gave the crown to Burnwell and went to her room. Arthur had a fight with Burnwell and the crown broke. Arthur ran to the house with the crown, but he didn’t know that Burnwell had the broken corner. Burnwell went away. Holder surprised Arthur with the crown and called the police”. Arthur didn’t say anything because he loved Mary.

My Opinion The story is not bad, but in my case, for only read it, I like it more long, but for make a summary, it makes me hard to make a summary. This one has a lot of details. Because of this, the summary is long.
