Interpreting Lenormand Cards

Interpreting Gypsy Card. The Lenormand Tarot is rather different from your usual Rider Waite based tarot card in that there is no major and minor arcana. The Lenormand consist of 36 cards for the tarot reader to interpret. The deck was designed by Mlle Lenormand in the 178090s in Paris. She went from rags to riches reading for the elite in France and predicted the downfall of Napoleon and others. She was also into Astrology and other esoteric methods of fortune telling. This Lenormand Tarot is beautifully illustrated in the traditional Gypsy style, therefore this tarot is very similar to other Gypsy Tarot Decks in its interpretation. There are minor differences though, for instance the Lenormand Cards have more images which symbolising something else. For example the card of Book, the Bear, Road, Clouds, and so on. These images use to hold deep meaning in the early 18 hundreds among people who were drawn toward superstition due to the uncertain future, the suffocating power of the church over them and the heavy taxes people had to pay and their freedom taken away. Even though this card is considered to be Gypsy card, its meaning was developed much later, after Christianity took a strong hold among people and were effected more by fear of god's punishment and the loss of control over one's fate and financial situation.

Mlle Lenormand Spread: To start the reading with Mlle Lenormand Cards, the inquirer should shuffle the cards and cut it 3 times. Some tarot reader will shuffle the cards themselves up to seven times or until the reader feels the time is right, and ask the inquirer to cut it. Deal the cards in four rows of eight, with the four leftover cards below the rows of eight. You will also have to chose a card which will represent the inquirer. For the female inquirer we chose the Young Lady card and for the male inquirer we chose the Gentleman card.

Where the inquirer card falls, will give the meaning to the cards around it. For instance, if the inquirer card falls in the centre, you will read the cards to the left as the past, whilst the cards to the right as the future. The card close will have one meaning, whilst the card far away another. You will have to pay attention to the combination of the card, eg. Positive card around a negative card will mean that the problem will not be as bad; a ring card next the the scythe will indicate an unhappy relationship.

Nine Card Spread: Lay out three cards in a row from the left to the right. The top three cards will represent the past, the middle row will represent the present and the bottom cards will show the future (from left to right). This type of spread can also be extended to a nine card spread, using three cards for the past, three cards for the present and three cards for the future. The central card is the vital card in this reading.

Nine Card Spread Example:

Locate the 'Lady' or 'Gentleman' card according to the inquirer's gender. This is the all important personal card, against which the position of all the other cards are judged. This card is often called the significator. The significator card doesn't have to be 'Lady' or 'Gentlemen' it can be the 'love' card if that is what the inquirer would like to know about his or her future.

General Meaning of the Lilies Card Greek legend associates lily with birth and it is a symbol for motherhood because the flower was said to be created from the breast milk of Hera. (Interestingly Hera originated from Sanksrit and the meaning of hera, is 'demonic illusion') As the story goes, Zeus wanted Hercules to become one of the gods but for that he needed Hera's milk. Of course Hera would not agree to this on her own will, thus Zeus invoked the god of sleep, Hypnos, to put her in a deep trans whilst Hercules suckled at her bosom. He did this so vigorously that the milk overflowed. That which flowed heaven-wards became the Milky Way, and the milk that flowed to the earth turned into a white lily. In Gypsy language, Sanskrit the lily is representing trinity, described as Soma, the unification of the body, soul and the spirit, that is YahZus. On the other hand, Lily can also represent halinI i.e. flame lily, which is constituting the opposite of chastity and virtue, it is a trinity of burning desires, hate, greed, jealousy, etc. The Lilies card by Lenormand representing chastity, virtue, the symbol for purity, love, faithfulness and caring. The card representing spiritual happiness rather than earthly, physical happiness. POSTION 1: You will have a happy life full of meaning. This picture applies to your entire life. You will not get it every time; it usually appears at times when you have doubts or problems. It is a reminder to be true to yourself, to follow your gut reactions, as they are valid and will bring you to a successful outcome. POSTION 2: You will know in life faithfulness till your death. The card speaks of more than just love; it means the total caring, loving and sharing of joy found in a good relationship. You are indeed lucky to have found such a love. The card does not necessarily have to relate

POSTION 4: Useless doubts about faithfulness; jealousy. This is a very reassuring picture for those who are tormented by suspicion that their spouses or the loved one having an affair. The snake card in position 2 will warn you of unfaithfulness, while the Lily card reassures you that your jealousy is for nothing. Even if your spouse is out with someone of the opposite sex, their conversation and actions are such that you don't have to worry, as your love relationship will not be affected.
