6 Seccrets off Stree et Figh hting Secre et #1: Create a barrier We all ha ave our own n personal boundaries. b When it comes to se elf protectio on, a bounda ary is set in order for yo ou to take th he best actio on possible. Boundarries can be set s and maintained by using non-p physical or “soft” “ skills, particularlyy through communica ation skills. They are e most effec ctive when utilized u with awarenesss. In other words, w the sooner s you see and ackn nowledge a potential th hreat the more e options yo ou have in dealing with w the situation, which h is why pre--fight “soft” skills s easily outrank the t in-fight “hard” “ skills we are cove ering in this series s of articles. When we e come to “h hard” skills self s defence, a boundaryy becomes a physical concept. This might take the form of usin ng an object likke a chair orr table place ed between n you and yo our would-be attacker or o your hand ds. Range dictates d a lott and unlesss you are arrmed in som me way, the maximum distance d you u will be given n at the begiinning of a physical p alte ercation is limited by the length of your y arms. Think of this bounda ary as more e of landmine or electricc fence than n as some sort s of shield d. Quite sim mply the ges sture of raissing your ha ands – and this t should be b done in a way that does d not insinuate your combative c in ntentions – presents p another huma an with a soccial barrier. Only a person p wanting to becom me physical will try to breach b this barrier. b Oncce they attem mpt to do thiss you have your signal to act or pre-empt them m.

Secre et #2: Sttrike Firrst, Strikke Hard d! Setting a barrier pro ovides an individual with h the opporrtunity to pre e-empt theirr attacker. Meaning g to strike firrst! Pre-emption is a consistently effective combat c tech hnique. At conversattional range e, approxima ately one arm’ss length or closer, c actio on usually be eats reaction. Which iss why so many m people get head butted. Reactionss only tend to t beat actio on if an attacke er hesitatess or the rang ge expands. The case studies s and the testing co ome back with the same e result: wh ho hits first usually u winss. The legality of striking first is baccked up by the e case Beck kford versuss the Queen n 1988, whe ere Judge Lord Griffithss famously confirme ed that “circu umstances may justify a pre-emptiive strike”. The mosst accessible e striking to ools are the hands, whicch can quickkly change from being a boundarry to a countter-offensive e weapon. Ideally the head is the preferred ta arget, as it containss the main senses and will w prompt the t would-b be attack to concentrate e on protectting their hea ad rather tha an attack yo ou. This putts you on th he proverbia al front foot. Self defe ence – and self s protectiion in generral – is abou ut being in control. c It’s was w businesss motivato ors might call a “proactivve approach h”. This pro oactive conccept is at the e core of myy frontline self defenc ce strategy and a you will read more about it in my m next tip.

Secre et #3: Constantt forwarrd presssure When an n assault oc ccurs it is ussually a one-sided affair with the atttacker using uninterrup pted and consstant forwarrd pressure on their vicctim; it is the e physical em mbodiment violence. If we werre to look att this from a natural science s persspective, a consensual fight – no n matter ho ow brutal an nd unregulatted – is a fig ght for domin nance between two memberss of the sam me species, usually mating m rightss, whereas an assault iss a fight bettween preda ator and preyy. If you ha ave addressed your “soft” or non-physsical skills properly p then n you will know k that th here is rare justification for indullging in a co onsensual fiight unless it takes placce as a legittimate sportt. Consenssual fights usually u provide you with h an option, right up unttil the fight take t place, not to particiipate. An assault is differe ent. Someone has targeted you for a specific purpose and on a base e level the ey don’t see you as a member m of th he same spe ecies. Thereforre your coun nter-assaultt has to be in kind. You musst meet forc ce with force e! You atta ack the attac cker and kee ep going un ntil you can escape e or th he threat is no more. So, if you have pre-empted you ur attacker, it is importa ant to keep the t pressure e up until yo ou have ach hieved yourr objective.

Secre et #4: Cover an nd attack Fights arre unpredicttable. Theyy are dependent on so many differe ent factors. Ideally iff we are forc ced to fight we w need to be pre-emp ptive and to maintain fo orward presssure i.e. always be “on th he front foott”. Unfortun nately mistakes are ofte en made and we can be e on the recceiving end of the punishm ment. When this t happen ns it is imporrtant to focu us all your energies e on regaining th he initiative. You need to take control as quickkly as possible. One wa ay this can be b done is to o take a natural n defe ensive postu ure, like covvering your head h with yo our arms an nd turn it intto a proactivve counterr-attack. Key poiints to reme ember here are to be ab ble to see th hrough yourr cover, keep k your arms tight to your he ead, keep th he cover mo obile to stop as many strrikes as possible e (front, side es and unde er) and to keep k moving g into the attack. A cover is a tempora ary but veryy effective ta actic. Manyy fighting sysstems have e fully develo oped it as a weapon that utilizes the elbows and d forearms. For simp ple self-defe ence skills we w use it to jam j a perso on’s attackin ng strikes in order to be egin striking back. b Think of it as a ba attering ram m. Once you are through h your enem mies attackss then beg gin your cou unter-attack.. The sam me applies iff you are tryying to regain the initiatiive, an area a we will look at in our next n tip.       Copyrigh ht 2012 http:///www.martiialartstrainingg.tv/

Secre et #5: Anti Grap ppling Humanss tend to gra apple when they fight without w weap pons. We got to t the top off the food ch hain by our advanced use u of tools.. Grapplin ng contains potentially lethal techniiques and itt has proven n its worth in n fights sincce the earlie est records.. In additio on to this grrappling is perfect p for co ontrol and restraint r tech hniques. However, in a civilia an self-defen nce counterr-assault situation it ofte en best avo oided. The main reason fo or this is tha at by its naturre you will become b entangle ed and therrefore vulnerable to multip ple attackerrs. Grapplin ng can prolo ong a fight unnecesssarily and every secon nd you stayy in a fight like this the greater the risk. It takes relatively litttle time for weapon ns as well ass other attackerrs to join in the frenzy of o a real figh ht.

This doe esn’t mean that t grapplin ng should be passed ovver altogeth her. It is an im mportant su upport system and can provide a sttudent with some superb combat positioning skills alo ong with other useful atttributes. We can also derive anti-grappliing techniqu ues from gra appling train ning. A good grappler g willl teach you how to bridge or buck someone s offf you if you are being pinned, move m from various v grou unded postu ures. They will w also sho ow you how w to sprawl to o prevent someone s from tackling your legs and a taking you y down. Copyrigh ht 2012 http:///www.martiialartstrainingg.tv/

In additio on to unders standing a grappler’s g c counter movves to another grappler we can add d in less sporting techniq ques like eyye gouges, biting, b finge er-breaks an nd head-buttts. These are all very simple s and primal p weap pons that wo ork well at grappling g disstance. However, remembe er the objecttive is to gett into a position when you y can strikke effectively again.

Secre et #6: Sttay on your y fee et A fight iss defined by y its range. When W we ge et to the “in--fight” stage e of physical conflict ran nges can chan nge pretty fa ast. From be eing at a non n-touching conversation c nal range yo ou have had d a brief win ndow to exp ploit striking range. r If this hasn n’t ended th he fight early on then you u will naturally end e up grappling with your attacker. a This is a very v close ra ange and can end up on the ground, esspecially if you y are fighting g in an open space. It is importtant to train from everyy conceivab ble range an nd to train to o get from th hat range to o standing as a quickly ass possible, where w you are a better pla aced to run when posssible. You musst be able to o use your preferred p strrike from ass many rang ges as possiible. You musst be able to o throw it fro om a standin ng posture, kneeling, sitting down and from yo our back. An assault can happ pen almost anywhere and a can go to t any range. It is also important to t be comfortable with transitioning t g from each range quickly. You must be able to go from your back to a seated position to your knees and then standing. Train to keep yourself protected as you move through the postures and avoid putting your hands on the ground.
