GENERAL SUPPLIES: Rotary cutting mat Rotary cutter with sharp blade Quilting rulers designed for use with rotary cutter/mat Sewing machine in good working order Basic sewing tools (needles, pins, machine needle, scissors, etc) #2 pencil, sharpened 3 ring binder

FABRIC: (All fabric should be quality 100% cotton broadcloth style) (40-42” wide) BORDER: 2 1/2 yards. INSIDE BORDER and sashing: 2 yards Blocks and cornerstones: 1/4 yard EACH of 6-10 fabrics.

COLOR NOTES: The BORDER fabric should have a design with at least 4 colors in it. The scale of the design should not exceed the size of a half-dollar if possible.

The INSIDE BORDER fabric should complement the BORDER fabric. It can be a solid, tone-on-tone, or small print.

The BLOCKS fabrics should coordinate with the BORDER fabric colors. These should be a mix of medium (scale the size of a quarter), small (scale the size of a dime), or tiny (scale the size of a pencil eraser) prints and tone-on-tones color fabrics.

Course Objectives: Complete a sampler style quilt top with nine different quilt block designs.. Lean to piece squares, rectangles, and triangles. Learn to piece curves and appliqué small set-in fabric patches. CLASS 1: (September 1) •

Class Objectives: Discuss the basics of quilting — Fabric selection and preparation — Measuring and cutting tools — Selecting fabrics



Instruction: — Identifying a focus fabric — Select fabrics by scale and complementary color — Identify Tools for rotary cutting — Identify Tools for measuring



Homework: — Shop for fabrics and general supplies — Wash all fabrics — Iron all fabrics in preparation for cutting

CLASS 2: (September 8) (Bring fabrics, cutting/measuring tools) •

Class Objectives: — Learn to square up fabric — Learn to properly use cutting and measuring tools. — Cut outside border strips — Cut fabric patches for blocks 1-4



Instruction: — How to square up yardage

— Cutting fabric strips, squares, and rectangles for blocks 1-4 (homework if not completed). CLASS 3: (September 15) (Bring sewing machine, measuring/cutting tools, fabric, and everything else) •

Class Objectives: Complete construction of Blocks 1, 2, 3 and 4.



Instruction: — Sewing sets — Marking seam and cutting lines — Construction of various nine-patch style blocks — Joining rows — Squaring up patches



Homework: — Complete blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4. — Finish cutting patches for blocks 5, 6, and 7.

CLASS 4: (September 22) (Bring sewing machine, measuring/cutting tools, fabric, and everything else) •

Class Objectives: Complete construction of Blocks 5, 6 and 7.



Instruction: — Working with smaller fabric pieces — Construction of other than nine patch style blocks — How to determine a block’s construction method — How to determine a block’s construction method



Homework: — Complete blocks 5, 6 and 7. — Finish cutting patches for blocks 8,and 9

CLASS 5: (September 29) (Bring sewing machine, measuring/cutting tools, fabric, and everything else) •

Class Objectives: Complete construction of Blocks 8 and 9.



Instruction: — Working with curves — Construction of other than nine patch style blocks



Homework: — Complete blocks 8 and 9. — Cut cornerstone squares and sashing rectangles

CLASS 6:(October 6) (Bring sewing machine, measuring/cutting tools, fabric, and everything else) •

Class Objectives: Learn to add sashing and cornerstones Learn to create a mitered corner border Instruction: — Creating rows with blocks and sashing — Creating rows with sashing and cornerstones — Assembling rows to create the quilt center — Adding outside border(s) with mitered corners
