The Informer. Gay teacher to launch LGBT+ network for 30th anniversary of Section 28

Lukasz Konieczka

A gay teacher who came out in front of his whole school will launch an LGBT+ network to help other teachers do the same. Daniel Gray told his fellow staff and pupils that he was gay as part of LGBT History Month last year and was bowled over by the positive response. His new initiative LGBTed will help LGBT educators become positive role models, as well as training to stop homophobic and transphobic bullying. Gray said:” “The aim is to be the role models we needed when we were at school. I remember during section 28 and how horrible it was to be bullied the way that I was. I was told by my teachers it’s just something that you have to deal with.” Research published last year by Stonewall found that half of LGBT pupils in Britain’s schools are bullied for their sexuality. Visit LGBTed.uk for more information on how to get involved.

Bishopsgate Institute: Protest on Camera Bishopsgate Institute is inviting people to view their vast range of protest photography as part of London History Day on Thursday 31st May, 7pm-8.30pm. The images will include prints of early Gay Pride marches, as well as anti-apartheid rallies and anti-war demonstrations. The Institute has a large archive of LGBT+ material, as well as regularly holding events that bring this material to life. On Wednesday 4th July, they are holding a workshop and lecture on the devastating effect the AIDS crisis had on the queer community. Both will be led by Matt Cook, Professor of Modern History at Birkbeck, with tickets available on bishopsgate.org.uk.

London’s first LGBT+ talent competition for under 18s Flawless Talent is the first talent competition created solely for LGBT+ youth and has begun taking entries ahead of its final on Saturday 17th June. The competition is the result of a collaboration between Mosaic LGBT Youth Centre and Pride in London, inspired by the success of Pride’s Got Talent. Those interested in competing can apply at mosaicyouth. org.uk/flawless, with private auditions taking place where contestants will be selected to perform in front of a live audience in the final. The winner of the final will have an opportunity to perform on stage at Pride in London this year. Lukasz Konieczka, Director of Services at Mosaic said: “We strongly believe in young LGBT+ people, and their incredible potential, and having witnessed a great success of Pride’s Got Talent under Ian Massa-Harris’s artistic eye we thought it is vitally important to offer similar opportunities to young LGBT+ people to help Pride in London be more inclusive.”

QX EXCLUSIVE:

PLEASUREDROME IS EXPANDING!

This week week’s ee ekk’s cover is in hon e honour nour of Pleasuredrome Pleasuredrome’s impending expansion. In a world where the roots gay culture is it’s iincreasingly i l getting tti forgotten, f tt it’ greatt that th t a gay sauna is flourishing! They’re bashing one out into the space nextdoor, almost doubling in size and giving you something to write home about (well, maybe don’t ACTUALLY write home about it, unless your parents are very liberal). We love Pleasuredrome. It’s got cavernous showers whose ceilings vault high into the air, comfortable and lockable booths for getting down and dirty and delicious in, and a gorgeous swimming pool AND a steam room. It’s evocative of the decadent, labyrinthine saunas of continental Europe. Saunas are something that continental Europe does WELL. They love a sauna! What they like to do, is go to the sauna FIRST, in the early evening, then have dinner, then go out dancing. We love that idea, gets all the pressure of pulling out of the way. Let’s try to implement it here in London. Anyway, with lots of exciting stuff in store for the city’s most popular, and steamiest gay establishment, we chatted to Marketing Manager Chris Amos to get an idea of what we can expect!

Why is it still important for London to have gay saunas? Pleasuredrome is more than a sauna and spa. We pride ourselves on being somewhere men can relax and get away from the busy world outside. The oldest Finnish saunas date back 10,000 years, after the Ice Age. Originally, Finnish saunas were earth pits covered with animal skins. Saunas were used for religious ceremonies, bodily cleansing, healing illnesses, relaxation and socialising. In this day and age of online dating, we feel Pleasuredrome provides a much-needed alternative for meeting other men. For people who have never been, tell us a bit about the Pleasuredrome experience. Continuous refurbishment and innovation sees Pleasuredrome’s vast maze of state-of-the-art facilities including: deluxe pods, cinema, a three hundred locker changing room, London’s largest gay spa pool, two steam rooms, two saunas, plenty of private rooms, encounter areas, a lounge and café/bar serving drinks and snacks 24-hours a day with alcohol sold 24/7. Pleasuredrome also offers massages by qualified masseurs in their dedicated massage suite.

What new features will there be at Pleasuredrome? Pleasuredrome has been in Waterloo for twenty-two years now, and for the past few years we’ve been actively looking to expand to offer more facilities. So we are very proud to announce we have a unique opportunity to expand, making the spa 50% bigger. This will enable us to open additional twenty-two deluxe pods with TV, power points to recharge mobiles and controllable lighting. We are very excited about creating Britain’s first steam maze, sure to please you guys! Plus a brand new stone spa pool with unique water features will be added. When can we expect the extension to open? As we have already had plans for some time, we are looking to start the works as soon as possible now. This will proceed without interrupting the existing spaces. Our goal is to open around Christmas time! To keep up to date with progress, readers can sign up to our newsletter on www.pleasuredrome.com or follow up on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - search Pleasuredrome.
