1. What is the NHS? National Health Service

2. What's the starting salary for a qualified nurse in the UK? The starting salary for a qualified nurse in the UK is 10,000 USD.

3. How much annual leave does a grade B nurse get? It depends on the job, some hospitals offer 120 hours or you earn a certain amount of time dependent on how often you work. When you start work as a B Grade nurse, you will be entitled to 4 weeks’ annual leave, exclusive of statutory and public holidays. The amount of leave you can take in one period is decided by your manager at the NHS Trust.

This time, the grading structure has changed in the UK there are no longer "B" grades as this was the Whitley Scale and nurses are now paid under Agenda for Change conditions. The annual leave would be the same for any grade of staff which is 27 days if you have worked for the NHS for less than 5 years; 29 days if you have worked for the NHS for less than 10 years; and 33 days more than 10 years.

4. How many hours a week does a nurse work? The standard contract is 37.5 hours a week. It varies by institution because some RN's work 3 12's, then have 2 days off - others work 4 10's then have 2 days off. RN's continually rotate days off in that manner - rarely will only but the topmost RN has every weekend off. It all works out to at least 40 hours per week eventually. It also depends on the job, the hospital and whether the nurse wants overtime, but most nurses in hospitals work 12-hour shifts, two days on, two days off, for about 40-48 hours a week.

The schedule of a registered nurse is dependent on who they work for, whether or not there is a high demand for RN’s in the area and any wage/benefit discussions that have been negotiated prior to/during their employment. In terms of a daily schedule registered nurses can often be found working 5-8 hour days, 4-10 hour days or 3-12 hour days per week. RN’s that work 8 or 10 hour days typically work about 40 hours or so per week, however nurses that works 12 hour days may end up working around 36 hours per week. In either case both the 36 hour and 40 hour work weeks are generally considered full-time work for registered nurses.
