QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ELASTOMER DIAPHRAGMS FOR NUCLEAR SERVICE DIAPHRAGM VALVES

SCOPE

1.

This S tandard Practice delineates a method for qualification of elastomer diaphragms, in accordance with methodology and documentation as described in Appendix QR-B of AS ME QME- 1 , that are intended for use in AS ME B oiler and Pressure Vessel Code, S ection III, Classes 2 and 3 diaphragm valves.

In addition, this S tandard Practice establishes methods for production verification and for the

development of service limits for Elastomer diaphragms.

NOTE

Guidelines on Terminology for Valves and Fittings” for definitions of common terms

and acronyms used in this S tandard Practice.

QUALIFICATION

2.

2. 1

The valve manufacturer s hall p rep are a tes t p lan that details the p ro cedures used to co mp ly

with the required tes ts o f S ectio n 2 . 2 .

The tes t p lan s hall s tate the ratio nale us ed to s elect the thermal

aging temperature and time, radiation aging total dose, and pressure and temperature for the wear aging or c yc le life test.

2. 2

A specific diaphragm size, compound, design, and construction may be qualified by type testing.

For each qualification step, testing shall be conducted on representative production diaphragms. This type testing shall include: 2. 2. 1

Thermal aging to qualify for a minimum period of time, as specified in S ection 4. 0.

aging test should be based on

2. 2. 2

Arrhenius Law to

The thermal

determine aging time and temperature.

Radiation aging to a total dose level at least equal to the requirements of the Design S pecification

or a dose level equivalent to the service life, as specified in S ection 4. 0.

2. 2. 3

Wear aging to qualify the elastomer diaphragm for the service life limitations, as specified in

S ection

4. 0.

The

wear aging

test shall

include

the

effects

of pressure,

and cycles,

simultaneously.

2. 3

Eac h size diap hragm s hall b e sub j ected to a b as eline life cyc le tes t at a p ress ure and temp erature

established by the valve manufacturer.

This test data will be used to establish acceptance criteria for the

production lot cyclic test specified in S ection 3 . 1 . 4.

2. 4

Thermal aging and wear testing conducted at two different pressure/temperature combinations may

be used to qualify the diaphragm for all conditions enveloped by the two points with equal or less radiation exposure.

PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS

3.

3.1

To verify that production diaphragms are equivalent to diaphragms qualified by the procedures for

S ection 2. 0, the following minimum requirements shall be met:

3.1 .1

Certification of compound by Certificate of Compliance from the diaphragm manufacturer for

each batch.

3.1 .2

Verification of tensile strength, modulus, and elongation properties for each batch of the elastomer

compound, as per AS TM D41 2.

In addition, all diaphragms for

valve sizes over NPS 2 shall be durometer tested in accordance with AS TM D2240.

3 .1 .4

Cycle test one diaphragm from each production lot in accordance to the life cycle test established

in S ection 2. 3 .

SERVICE LIMITATIONS

4.

4. 1

S ervice limitations shall include limitations on diaphragm flexure cycles (full stroking, close-open-

close or open-close-open), time in service, and storage life as follows:

4. 1 . 1

The required diaphragm cycle/flexure life shall not exceed 1 /3 the minimum cycle life established

by the requirements of S ection 2. 0.

4. 1 . 2

The service life of the elastomeric diaphragm shall not exceed five years, and the combined

service and storage life of the diaphragm shall not exceed ten years.

5.

5.1

MARKING Elastomeric diaphragms shall be marked with the month and year of diaphragm manufacture, valve

manufacturer's identification symbol, and elastomer compound identification code or batch code.

6.

6. 1

DOCUMENTATION The testing performed in accordance with the requirements o f S ec tio n 2 . 0 s hall b e do c umented in

a test report that shall include the test plan.

6. 2

An applications report shall be prepared to show the suitability of the specific diaphragm for the

service defined by a Design S pecification.

6. 3

In lieu of compliance with service life required by the Design S pecification, the applications report

shall recommend the required diaphragm replacement life or qualified service life based on time and/or cycles that are based on the data in the test report.
