MOVIE REVIEW PAPER #: 2

A. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE MOVIE: DURING THE MOVIE: The most important characters in the movie are Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin and Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker. The story portrays about the founding of social networking website “Facebook” and the resulting lawsuits. The group of people that would like this film are the following; the internet users especially the social media people, the business personnel’s such as; stakeholders, entrepreneur, employees and managers, and the students. Because these people could relate to the story of the movie and could gain insights and valuable lessons that they could apply in their business and individual career towards achieving their goals and success in life. AFTER THE MOVIE: I definitely liked the movie because it entails a different perspective of success in business in which in this movie the main character became successful because of his of passion in the social network. I have learned that no matter what circumstances you’ve dealt in life, no matter how people judge you by your capabilities what’s’ important is your perseverance, passion and patience to achieve your goal and that will drives you toward success. Aside from that also the valuable lessons it imparted in which I can use in planning my future. Thus this movie becomes an eye opener for me to the reality of the business world. And this true inspirational movie shows how life can be in college if you are someone special which means you get privileges, power and authority. I would give this movie 7 out of 10 because of the

quality as well the insights it offers to its audience. If I would state a brief synopsis that may ruin the movie then it would be if I’ll state the three main characters of the movie, the people behind the creation of Facebook because it’s the main point of the movie that Mark Zuckerberg is not the only who build Facebook but he is the one who won the lawsuit process and declare as the founder of Facebook. The lesson I have learned was “Ego is necessary to win” because think about the most successful people in business like Gates, Trump and Zuckerbeg. They have this massive egos which actually a requirement in business. To win at the level of these people are winning at. I need to know each and every day that I am the absolute best at what I do, it’s simple as that. “You don’t get to 500 Million friends without making a few enemies” this phrase conveys the competition in the business world. This title is simple but could easily summarize the entire movie. B. SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE MOVIE: The Social Network The movie begins with the “Break up scene” in which Zack and his girlfriend are in the bar having a conversation then suddenly his girlfriend got annoyed and decided to break up with him due to Zack’s personality of

being self-centered, arrogant and has this attitude of

interrupting and correcting things in their conversation. Correcting people over small things is somehow an impolite habit to do because it cause a fight, misunderstanding and disrespect to the other party. There should be an appropriate, polite and limited way in correcting someone. One ethical issue in the movie is the hacking into computers and online directories. They hacked into directories to get the information they wanted to start their website. Computer hacking is legal but also unethical and certainly not the right way to go about business. There are serious consequences. A better alternative would have been to go from dorm to dorm or campus to

campus and asking for permission to these emails. This would be difficult as you would have to sell people on the benefits but will ensure that it is not a form of scam. The Social Network is a movie that shares the story of the development and ethical issues that went along with starting Facebook. Facebook is a social networking website that now connects with millions of people around the world. The movie leads to business ethics breakpoint “If it is legal, does that make it ethical?”, everything Mark Zuckerberg did was very legal. His lawyers made sure of that but does it make it right? But if its legal why not? Every one of the actions depicted in the film was arguably legal: Zuckerberg’s friend signed away his interest in Facebook because he wrongly thought that Zuckerberg’s lawyers were looking after his interests as well. Similarly, virtually all of the practices that nearly wrecked the global economy back in 2008 were legal—all of which goes to prove that just because something is legal doesn’t make it ethical or right. Any lawyer worth his hourly billings can find a way to exploit weaknesses in the system. So the question isn’t “why?” but “why not?” If the only thing standing between you and millions, even billions, is other people’s disapproval, why not do what you want to do? Especially since you can subsequently buy their approval with a check and an appearance on the news or interviews? Of course, if this becomes normative, then the kind of trust that makes free markets possible would dry up, which is exactly what happened in the aftermath of sub-prime crisis. Lenders have money to lend—what they lack is confidence in borrowers’ ability or willingness to repay. Jesse Eisenber as Mark Zuckerberg steals the show a bit, but the rest of the cast turns in wonderful performances that show off the same restraint and balance seen in the movie. Andre Garfield as Eduardo Saverin plays a sweet innocent but doesn’t shy away from Saverin’s foolishness. Justin Timberlake gives a smart performance as Sean Parker, a savvy entrepreneur whose opportunism never goes off he’s proving that he can excel at basically any of entertainment. Everyone in this

cast delivers and they make their characters more than just figures submitted for our adoration. I certainly liked the movie because it simply shows the side of reality, application when it comes to us, users of these social networking sites such as Facebook. The movie just didn’t only bring us entertainment but it has the touch of reality and effects of modernized technology we have nowadays The cast had so much chemistry that makes the movie more realistic. The opening scene of the film is so dense and fast-paced, it’s actually ridiculous. The rowing scene alone is so breathtaking you might find yourself actually holding your breath while watching it. And this movie made you care about Mark Zuckerberg way more than you ever thought you would. One thing that I disliked about this movie are the sexual explicit scenes which are not appropriate to minors because it could promote premarital sex to students and teenagers. The group of people that I would recommend this film are the following; the internet users, the business personnel’s such as; stakeholders, entrepreneur, employees and managers, and the students while I discourage minors below thirteen that is why I rated this movie a PG-13 because it content sexual scenes, drug and alcohol use and languages that are unsuitable for minors. Overall the movie was educational to learn ethical issues in business also it was good it portrays lessons and problems in the reality. Rating system: I would rate an B+ to the movie because of the chemistry between the actors and actresses and how great they play on their roles, they act like as it us real and not just a script. and also because of essence, lessons, and realization of the movie which makes it important to watch. Short Biography: In Greek mythology, there was once lived a student from the University of San Carlos named Emmanuel M. Chua. His friends called him “Emmanuel the great” because of His charisma that can entice a lot people to fall for him and his greatness in strategy in every

hurdle he faced in life. He was a fourth year student of the business administration department and he majors in operation management. He’s a sporty type of guys that play a lot sports such as; badminton, volleyball and table tennis. And he is a music listener and an introvert person, but normally spends most time with his friend and socializing with other culture. C. REACTION/REFLECTION: It’s hard to describe what I felt after watching The Social Network. I knew going in that much of the account it presented of Facebook’s founding was fictional. Certain things, however, hit too close to home not to make me at least a bit sentimental and a bit embarrassed as well. Why should I feel anything? It was a just a movie, right? I sometimes pride myself with being one of the first people ever to have been friends with a personal computer for their entire conscious life; although this experience is a commonplace among today’s children. And so, I often wonder, how does my experience compare to that of Mark Zuckerberg and other Internet pioneers? How different of a person am I? I watched The Social Network in the middle of a packed in our classroom and each time a familiar experience was depicted on screen I felt self-conscious, or something like it as in, how could this audience, seeing this, genuinely understand the excitement over Mark Zuckerberg’s achievement? I felt it acutely because it tasted so much like my own formative years — and I realized how much I would probably like Mark if he were even 50% like the caricature painted in the movie. I think the main moral lesson of the movie is that it teaches young minds to think outside the box, and be inspired and respect the new age way of a business and wealth. But it also reflects the ethical issues happened in reality such as computer hacking, illegal property rights and cyber bullying which are the common problems in the World Wide Web.

I came to realize how similar this is to my life now. I am like almost every character in the film. I am Winklovess brothers who demand justice and recognition. I am Eduardo who gives everything in a friend and expects the same in return. I am also Mark Zuckerberg who wants to be successful in life. At first I did not really like the movie due to a lot of talking but later on the I understand every insights it wants to convey to the audience and I am glad that I did sat down and watched it till the end.
