MOTIVATION LETTER FOR THE BACHELOR´S DEGREE PROGRAMME AT THE JAZZ DEPARTEMENT OF CODARTS IN ROTTERDAM Dear Jazz Departement,

I am a flutist and vocalist from Prague and I would like to extend my music skills, namely improvisation and composition, at the Coadarts University in Rotterdam. I have decided to apply for the undergraduate studies at the Codarts, because I am very interested in a number of programmes that you offer. Primarily I would like to study jazz music, but I would also like to build solid basic knowledge of other styles – such as Brazilian and Latin music, where the flute often plays an essential role. I have chosen Codarts among other universities because of the wide range of programmes offered, the international cultural cooperation and also because I have received great references from some of the Czech musicians who are studying or studied with you (Jan Uvira – piano; Patricie Fuxová – studies singing at Berklee, Valencia with a few of your professors). The flute professor I spoke with on the phone was very kind and it was a pleasure to communicate with him as well as with the university staff. I was very impressed and I feel I would love to become a part of and contribute to a cool place like that. Beside the fact that there are no jazz flute experts in the Czech Republic and the fact that jazz departments at Czech music universities are still not as open-minded as those abroad, I would also like to get to know first hand other cultural and social environments, make friends with musicians abroad and deepen my foreign language abilities as well. I think I am the right person for this programme because all I ever want to do in my life is play the flute. I am a Prague jazz conservatory graduate and I have played in some really interesting projects – bands, big bands, duos, trios... you name it. I started out playing with country and folk bands, then choirs, and later still big bands and funky and jazz bands. My current projects include playing with Jazz Generation - a band playing original jazz music, Concept Art Orchestra - a professional big band playing contemporary jazz and world music, Vesna - a group playing Slavonic songs in modern arrangments and I lead my own sextet called Andrea´s Extet, for which I compose original music. My dream project is to do a cornet quintet and try to mix traditional Czech melodics with jazz forms and harmonies and create a whole new sound.

I want to eventually become a full time professional flute artist. The main goal is to become a jazz flute expert because that is a thing I believe the current music scene lacks and I intend to focus on that and fix it. I hope to learn to compose beautiful and meaningful music and become a teacher and educator for other flute enthusiasts. I am determined to maximize the contribution that I can make. I am a very ambitious and disciplined person, and experiencing Codarts‘ culture would mean a great deal to me. I was an extremely hard-working student at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague and that is what I would be at Codarts as well. I am a very positive, optimistic and outgoing person with very good organisation skills which I believe can be seen, heard and felt in my projects, audio recordings, videos or even photos. I think I would fit in really well at Codarts, it would be a tremendous opportunity for me, and I would love to take on that challenge.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Andrea Šulcová
