You will need:

Abbreviations:

One small skein of dark brown yarn Some leftover light brown yarn Polyester stuffing One pair of safety eyes Your favourite crochet hook You favourite sewing needle

sc = stitch inc = increase dec = decrease hdc = half double crochet stitch dc = double crochet stitch sl = slip stitch blo = back loop only flo = front loop only fo = finish of ( ... ) = repeat whatever is in between the brackets [ .. ] = total amount of stitches in that round

For the bear in the picture I personally used: 4.5 mm eyes 2.25 mm (size B) hook I used DMC Natura Just Cotton yarn in the colours: Dark brown: N41 Siena Light brown: N37 Canelle

Tips: + Stuf really firmly! + Stitch very tightly, so no holes show when stuffing. You can do this by using a smaller hook than your yarn label recommends, and by pulling your thread a little after every stitch.

Head Use dark brown 1. 6 in a magic circle 2. ( inc ) x 6 3. ( sc, inc) x 6 4. ( 2 sc, inc) x 6 5. ( 3 sc, inc) x 6 6‐11. sc around Place the eyes between round 8 and 9 with about 8 sc in between them 12. ( 3 sc, dec) x 6 13. ( 2 sc, dec) x 6 Start stuffing 14. ( sc, dec) x 6 15. ( dec ) x 6 Fo, close the hole and weave away your thread Snout Use light brown 1. make a chain of 3 sc Start in the second stitch of the chain and work in an oval round 2. sc, 3 sc in the next sc, sc, 3 sc in the next sc 3. ( sc, inc ) x 4 4. sc around Fo, leave a long thread for sewing

Embroider a nose with a dark brown thread. Pick a centre point and make two diagonal outlines. Fill the space between them with more diagonal and vertical lines. Make one horizontal line at the top to even out uneven lines. Now finish the nose by making a vertical line at the bottom of the triangle of the nose. If you are having trouble with the embroidery, you can always choose for a safety nose with a washer. Now sew on the snout between round 7 and 11.

Ears (make 2) Use dark brown 1. 6 in a magic circle 2. ( inc ) x 6 3. sc around Fo, don't close the hole, leave a long thread

[6] [12] [12]

Fold your ears into two flat pieces and sew them on top of the head with a slight curve, between round 2 and 6.

Legs (make 2) Use dark brown 1. 5 in a magic circle 2. ( inc ) x 5 3. sc around 4. ( 4 sc, inc) x 2 5. ( 5 sc, inc) x 2 Fo the first leg and leave a long thread Don't fo the second leg!

[5] [10] [10] [12] [14]

Take both your legs. You will continue crocheting around, starting from your endpoint at the second leg, but instead of crocheting another round on your second leg, continue crocheting around your first leg. Once you've done all 14 sc, continue once again on your second leg and make 14 sc around there. This way you will mend the two legs together and make one new large round of 28 sc.

Body Continue from the round of your fused legs 1. sc around 2. ( 13 sc, inc) x 2 3. sc around

[28] [30] [30]

You still have your long thread left from finishing of the first leg. Are there any gaps between the two legs? If so, take the thread from the first leg and sew it shut, then weave away the left‐over thread. This ensures that no stuffing will come peeking out later.

4. ( 14 sc, inc) x 2 5. sc around 6. ( 14 sc, dec) x 2 7. sc around 8. ( 8 sc, dec) x 3 9. sc around 10. ( 7 sc, dec) x 3 11. sc around Start stuffing 12. ( 6 sc, dec) x 3 13. sc around 14. ( 5 sc, dec) x 3 15. sc around 16. ( 4 sc, dec) x 3 17. sc around 18. 5 sc, dec, 6 sc, dec Fo, don't close the hole, leave a long thread

Loosely place your bear's head onto the open hole of the body. Take your needle and sew the two parts together. Use the pictures for reference. I always find it easiest to sew one needle stitch for every crochet stitch the piece has that I am sewing onto some other part. So, in this case, that means 13 stitches with the needle, one for every sc of the bear's neck.

Arm (make 2) Use dark brown 1. 6 in a magic circle 2‐4. sc around Stuff a little if your arm isn't too small 5. dec, 4 sc 6‐8. sc around 9. dec, 3 sc 10‐12. sc around Fo, leave a long thread

Sew the arms to both sides of the body, right below the head.

Tail Use dark brown 1. 4 in a magic circle 2. inc, 3 sc Fo, leave a long thread

[4] [5]

Sew the tail on the lower back of the bear. If there is space enough, you can put some stuffing between the two parts. Tip: Make the bear fully in white yarn to make yourself a polar bear! You can embroider his nose with a light blue yarn.

Extra tip: Sometimes, when you sew on the arms, they will position themselves in many ways ‐ anywhere but neatly besides the body. If you want them to be close to the body, try placing a rubber band (or a softer hair tie!) around the body for one day. I know it looks kind of sad, but it works and I guarantee that your creature won't get mad at you. Just be sure to not make the band too tight, for that can leave marks.
