Grant Cardone’s Story “I grew up middle class. My dad was the first educated in his family and it was his dream to create a middle class lifestyle for his five kids and wife. The middle class was a dream my dad made a reality. My dad started as a paymaster (accountant) for the US Army, sold automobiles for a short stint, owned a neighborhood grocery store, life insurance sales and was a stock broker. My dad started having heart problems at the age of 42 the same year my twin brother and I were born. At the age of 50, my dad bought his dream house and less than two years later he was dead. My mother was left with a house she couldn’t take care of, no way to create new income and a little bit of life insurance money. Everyday she was reminded we were at financial risk. Money going out and no money coming in. I could see and hear the fear my mother was experiencing and at the age of 10 I couldn’t do much about it. My mom would always tell us how well my dad had done to take care of us and how grateful we should be to have a middle class life. At the age of 16 I had enough and told my mom, “this middle class thing is a joke–when I grow up I am going to be rich and if I get there I am going to help a lot of people.” My mom thought I was an unappreciative, disrespectful teenager– which was probably true–but looking back now, one of the primary missions and purposes of my life was being formed. By the time I was 31, I had saved my first million dollars. Over the last 25 years I have built four companies that have allowed me to create an unbelievable lifestyle for myself, my family and employees. Today, the four companies which range from service business to technology to real estate will do almost $100 million in combined sales and employ almost 200 people in eight states. It is my belief that people spend money to advertise before they spend money to brand. Grant Cardone’s 12 Commandments 8.  Stay Broke. Burn this into your consciousness, “money doesn’t sleep but it does get bored.” Money left hanging around will find emergencies. To get a million dollars in a bank I would throw all free cash into a sacred account every time I got it so that it would appear that the company and myself were broke. This inspired me to go out and continue to move away from poverty and get new customers to fund new activities. Stay broke, stay hungry and if you are going to have money laying around invest it as fast as you can.

Grant Cardone’s 12 Commandments 9.  Keep Hustling. The moment you quit hustling you will get out hustled. The moment you are busy moving around in the market you will be forgotten. You must wake up everyday to out work, out hustle, out maneuver your every competitor. Even long after you have hit it big stay hustling, branding yourself as someone that will not go away. The first reason I hustled was because I was scared, the second reason was to set the example for my competitors, the third reason was to convince myself I was committed and the last reason was for customers. Make a list of when your competition will not work it out and what they will not do and go there. There is not business without busyness – make noise and stay in the market.

Grant Cardone’s 12 Commandments 10.  Beat Up New Technology and Throw It Away. Jack Welch of GE said, “if you can’t dominate don’t spend your time there.” I love this saying and live by this today. A few years ago I overheard someone say that one of my competitors hated social media. The next day we were banging on social media for my life. We exploited every social media I could find because I knew this guy hated new technology and was fixed in the past. Unfortunately or fortunately this seems to happen to most people. Like that old man or woman – I don’t have time for that. I don’t want to be that guy that gets old and unwilling to look at technology developments. I embrace everything that can allow me to scale out and brand and dominate the competition. Let the companies provide the technology and I will show you how to beat it up and then discard it when its over. I trust that my brand, my name and my company will be around longer than 99% of all new developments but that doesn’t mean I can’t use them while they are around. In all my companies we make lists of all new technologies available to the company that we can USE not be used by.

Grant Cardone’s 12 Commandments 11.  Expand While Others Bitch Out The biggest move I ever made was when the rest of the market was in retreat. 2009 the market was in collapse and I turned it on. I couldn’t spend money at the time because everything was frozen but I invested energy and creativity like I was a billionaire. Warren Buffet says, “be greedy when others are fearful.” Remember when you don’t have money you still have commitment, creativity, energy and ideas. Use those like they are money and expand while others defend. When others are retreating and playing defense take the field and play offense. When they won’t spend you must. When everyone is going all out, it might be the time to say, “what?” And be a little cautious – but when they are terrified and capitulating that is the time when you want to go all in with your expansion moves.

Measure your people on production. If they don’t produce get rid of them. You can’t build a winning team with losing teammates. Hire and fire like the NFL. You either produce or you don’t, we either win with you or we don’t. Any time I am pushing as the commander in chief of my company and things are not going the way I KNOW they should, I look for who is in my way. That one person that is creating dissention, doubt, and a bad example. There is always someone doing this. Be willing to fire to grow. I don’t keep people because they have been with me. I keep people that make the company better, faster and more profitable.
