Foreword My reason for making sheet music for Halo started with Halo: Combat Evolved. I played it in 2002, the year the game was first released here in the Netherlands. In the main menu of the game I heard this:

The Halo Monk Chant by Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori.

From that point on I loved the Halo Soundtracks. In fact, it opened up the world of soundtracks in general for me. In 2008, after I started playing the piano in 2007, I was looking for a way to be able to play the music from the Halo soundtracks on the piano. I turned to my piano tutor Jaap Eilander and asked if it would be possible to arrange some of the music from the soundtracks I loved. We started working on making an easy to play arrangement of the track “Unforgotten” from the soundtrack of Halo 2, and played around with some other tracks. It was so much fun to be able to play the music that had so many fun memories tied to it. The scenes, moments, and environment of the game were all brought back by the music. I wanted to continue making sheet music for Halo. To keep on enjoying this experience. To be able to play Halo on the piano, as well as on the Xbox.

Part of “Unforgotten” from Halo 2 Volume 2 by Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori

After a couple of years of arranging and transcribing sheet music with my tutor, we had established a decent collection of Halo sheet music, coming from all the available Halo soundtracks at the time (2010). When I first ventured into the online Halo community, mostly the forums from Bungie, Halo Waypoint, and other Halo fan sites, I encountered something familiar; more sheet music made by other fans. I wasn’t alone in my desire to make the sheet music and that was inspiring. It inspired me to keep going and keep on making a Halo Sheet Music Collection. One that was as complete as a pianist would want. And as correct as possible when trying to covert orchestra music into piano solo.

In 2012 after some time spend on halowaypoint.com some like minded Halo fans who were interested in my sheet music got in touch with me and asked if I was willing to share it. Amazed that people were interested in our sheet music we decided to release it to the public. During the process of making it available to the public, I discovered that it was getting harder to find new fan-made Halo sheet music. Seeing that we were one of the few still active in making fan-made sheet music for Halo, we were motivated to make a complete and comprehensive collection of Halo sheet music. In 2013 after our sheet music was first released in the Community Creations section of Halo Waypoint, we continued working on finishing Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Wars and Halo: Reach and releasing them to the public. We released it in PDF format and later in MIDI files at the request of Halo fans using the sheet music. The release was notable in the amount of views it got. On Halo Waypoint it climbed above 30,000 before the forums stopped supported the ability to see the amount of views. Later, even after the project was moved to the haloarchive.com forums in 2015, it kept climbing. We knew there was interest, by the comments, messages and views we received. Since then we have progressed onto Halo Legends sheet music and beyond. Seeing improvement of our abilities and skills in making sheet music, we even re-wrote all the sheet music we had in 2016 in order to make these books clean, consistent and in the best state we could when we released them. The inspiration for making these books came in late 2015 when my family and friends gave me a gift for my birthday. They collected all the sheet music Jaap and I had made and printed it into one giant Halo Sheet Music Collection hardcover book. Having our, until that moment only digital, sheet music in our hands as a physical book was incredible. That’s the journey we took with Halo. After arranging more than 120 pieces we made these 7 books. We are very proud to be able to offer something like this back to the Halo community that has been very present in our lives. We hope that longtime Halo fans enjoy them and will be able to play the tracks that go along with many Halo memories, and that new people can enjoy the music as a standalone work. This is a fan project that took many years to complete and we will progress steadily as long as there will be new Halo soundtracks. We hope you enjoy it!
