CD 1 Track 32 Woman: Hello, Ruben. How was your summer? Boy: It was great! I went to Jamaica for a week. Woman: Jamaica? Boy: Yes. My uncles and aunts live there, and my mother and I went to see them. It was fantastic! Woman: I’m sure it was. Was the flight very long? Boy: Yes. It was nine hours and forty-five minutes. I timed it! But we also waited in the airport for four hours. Woman: Were you bored? Boy: No! I went into a computer game shop in the airport and I played games with another boy. He was waiting for his flight to Canada. Woman: Did you know him? Boy: No, I didn’t. We played a few games and then we said goodbye. It was time to go. On the plane, I sat next to the window and I watched my favourite film. I watched it three times! Woman: Really? Boy: Yes, it’s very funny. My mum listened to music, and she read two books. My dad didn’t read. He just ate and slept. Woman: Was the weather hot when you were there? Boy: No, it wasn’t. There was a storm on the first day, so it was quite cool. Woman: That’s nice. Boy: And there was a heatwave in the UK when we were away! It was hotter in England than it was in Jamaica! Woman: Oh yes!

Hi, Pete. Did you go trekking yesterday? Yes, I did. We walked through a valley for an hour, and then we went into a forest. Did you like it? It was OK. But the best thing was a waterfall in the forest. That was really beautiful. Have you got any pictures of it? I’ve got one on my phone. Wait … Yesterday there was a big storm with thunder and lightning, and very strong winds in the south. Now, let’s look at the weather forecast for tomorrow. It’s going to be a very sunny day with high temperatures. It’s going to stay like this until next weekend, so keep cool and drink lots of water. I really like it here! Yes. I do, too. I went rock climbing yesterday. It was great! Hmm … I thought it was very difficult. I’m not very sporty. I’m more musical. Mmm … I’m not. Oh, it’s six o’clock. I’m going to the sports club. There’s a juggling lesson and I really want to go. Ooh, juggling! I love that! Can I come with you? Of course! Come on.

Excuse me. Is there a wifi zone near here? Woman: Yes, there’s one in the main square. Man: Where’s that?

Woman: It’s next to the bank. Go straight on, then turn left at the post office. Then go straight on, and you’ll see the bank and the main square on your right. Man: Thanks! Bye! 6

Woman: Can I use your laptop for a moment? I want to buy something on the post office website. Man: OK. What do you want to buy? Woman: It’s a special light bulb that saves a lot of energy. Look here’s the website. Man: They’re a bit expensive. Woman: But they last a very long time.

CD 1 Track 34 Man: Welcome to ‘Science and Technology’. Today we’re going to talk about an amazing woman, Marie Curie. Girl: Yes, hello. Marie Curie was born in Poland. She was the youngest child in her family. She had four brothers and sisters. Her mother died when she was a young child. Man: How did that affect Marie? Girl: It was very hard for her and all her family. Marie and her sisters started working. She worked as a tutor, helping other children to do their homework. Man: Why did Marie move to Paris? Girl: Well, her sister went there to study medicine. When she finished, she asked Marie to go to Paris to live with her. Marie went to Paris in 1891, when she was 24 years old. She studied physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne, a famous university. She was very intelligent. Man: And who was Pierre Curie? Girl: He was her husband. Marie’s father’s surname was Sklodowski, and that was her name, too, when she was a child. Man: Why did she change her name?

Girl: She changed it when she married Pierre Curie in 1895. Pierre was an important scientist, too. They lived and worked together for eleven years. They had two daughters. Man: And Pierre and Marie won the Nobel Prize together. Girl: That’s right. Marie was the first woman to win this important prize, and she was also the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne University. Man: That’s amazing! Thank you, Anna.
