RICK. So, Dina, did you grow up here in Miami?

DINA. Yes, I did , but we weren't born here. My sister and I were born in Puerto Rico, and we moved here when we were kids.

Sí, lo hice, pero no nacimos aquí. Mi hermana y yo nacimos en Puerto Rico y nos mudamos aquí cuando éramos niños.

RICK. So, did you study English when you were in school in Puerto Rico?

Entonces, ¿estudiaste inglés cuando estabas en la escuela en Puerto Rico?

DINA. Yes, we did for a few years – but we didn't really learn English until we came here.

Sí, lo hicimos durante algunos años, pero realmente no aprendimos inglés hasta que vinimos aquí.

RICK. Wow! And now you speak English better than I do – and I was born here!

Thomas. When were you born, Grandma?

Thomas. ¿Cuándo naciste, abuela?

Grandma. I was born in 1934.

Abuela. Nací en 1934.

Thomas. Really? were you born here in Los Angeles?

Thomas. De Verdad? ¿Naciste aquí en Los Ángeles?

Grandma. No, I wasn't. Your grandfather and I were both born in China.

Abuela. No, no lo era. Tu abuelo y yo nacimos en China.

Thomas. So when did you come to the U.S.?

Thomas. Entonces, ¿cuándo viniste a los Estados Unidos?

Grandma. My family didn't move here until I was 13 years old. Thomas. Really? So were you sad to leave all your friends and family in China? Grandma. Yes, we were. But we weren't sad for long. We soon made friends and everything. Thomas. That's good. When was Grandpa born? Grandma. He was born in 1933, but he says he wasn't really born until 1952.

Abuela. Mi familia no se mudó aquí hasta que yo tenía 13 años. Thomas. De Verdad? ¿Estabas triste de dejar a todos tus amigos y familiares en China? Abuela. Si, estabamos. Pero no estábamos tristes por mucho tiempo. Pronto hicimos amigos y todo. Thomas. Eso es bueno. ¿Cuándo nació el abuelo? Abuela. Nació en 1933, pero dice que en realidad no nació hasta 1952

Thomas. Why does he say that? Thomas. ¿Por qué dice eso? Grandma. Because that's when he met me!

Abuela. ¡Porque fue entonces cuando me conoció!
