Serving The Needs Of Energy Producers For 65 Years Reliable sources of energy are essential in today’s world. Extracting oil and gas from beneath the earth and seas of the world means coping with extremes of pressure and temperature. This service requires products which meet the highest quality standards of any industry. Such products can only be designed and built by skilled and experienced personnel, using the latest technological tools. For 65 years Hydril has pioneered in providing high quality innovative pressure control products used in extremely hostile conditions. • Blowout preventers and control systems made by Hydril allow development of energy resources in today’s most demanding drilling environments. Whether used in workover rigs or at the deepest subsea sites, Hydril’s pressure control systems are relied on by many of the world’s leading companies. • Special purpose pressure control systems meet diverse requirements. Diverters and flow selectors, high performance chokes, pulsation dampeners, Checkguard and Kellyguard valves, Bettis drill pipe and control line protectors serve special functions in drilling operations where highest quality and integrity are essential.

• Hydril tubular products provide the industry with the performance essential for drilling safely on land and water, and fulfill difficult production requirements after completion. Hydril’s premium tubular connections for both casing and tubing, as well as high torque tool joints are the finest available. • Elastomers perform a key role in controlling pressures. They must provide a secure seal, maintain their integrity at high and low temperatures, and resist very high pressures. That is why Hydril blends their own rubber compounds and molds their own elastomeric parts. Hydril also supplies high quality replacement elastomer parts for service in products of other manufacturers. • Research, development, support and service are high priority segments of Hydril’s business. To provide customers with the products needed for drilling operations, Hydril collects and analyzes data gathered in customer support operations as well as customer feedback on their special needs. Then they utilize that information to guide development of new technologies and improved products.

SuPreme™ LX Features

Tubular Products

Clearance OD 1.5-2.0% larger than specified pipe body OD (.5-1.0% larger than API maximum) permits use in extreme clearance situations. An optional turned OD equal to the API 1% maximum OD is available.

Versatility for multiple applications, SuPreme LX provides excellent sealing and structural performance while maintaining a clearance OD.

PIN

100% collapse rating is provided by the sliding metal-to-metal seal. This seal also functions as a secondary internal pressure seal, thus providing two metal internal seals.

Hooked threads provide high tension strength by resisting the tendency for radial disengagement. This virtually eliminates thread pullout, a relatively common problem on moderate and high diameter-tothickness ratio pipe.

Performance ratings account for API pipe body dimension variations. Forming done on the pipe ends in Hydril's plant prior to stress relieving and machining ensures rated performance is attained.

Suitability for H2S service is achieved by preventing excessive stress levels. Radial clearance in the threads along with the makeup position control provided by the reverse angle torque shoulder allows strict control of induced stress. Residual stress created during forming is removed by properly stress relieving the affected area.

100% Pipe body rated gas sealing reliability is provided by the compound pressure energized metal-to-metal internal pressure seal. Pressure-induced radial expansion of the small diameter step of the pin, permitted by radial clearance in the threads, compounds the pressure-containing contact stress on the metal seal, improving seal capability.

Optional resilient seal ring can be installed in the groove located in front of the secondary metal seal. The secondary metal seal functions independently of the seal ring and thus retains its capability for containing internal and external pressure.

Patented Seal Saver protects the pin seal from handling damage and acts as a stiffener to improve metal seal functioning.

Trouble-free makeup is provided with Hydril's field proven, deep stabbing two-step design.

U.S. and foreign patents apply.

This graphic depicts the von Mises triaxial equivalent stress curve for the combined tension and internal pressure quadrant. Along with the pipe body curve 0 are curves for an FJ connection and for a SuPreme LX connection. The tension efficiency of the SuPreme LX connection is developed by machining the connection on formed ends. With a machined OD slightly larger than that of the as-rolled pipe body, the tension efficiency of the SuPreme LX connection is noticeably higher than that of the pipe body OD FJ connection. However, the extent of the performance advantage of SuPreme LX can

12

be best seen in the combined pressure and tension envelope of the von Mises curve. Machining the SuPreme LX connection on formed ends increases the total section thickness along the length of the connection. With a greater thickness than in the pipe body, hoop stresses in the connection created by internal pressure increase at a slower rate than in the body. The greater thickness thus produces a substantially broader performance envelope for SuPreme LX compared to a pipe body OD connection.

PRESSURE - % Of Pipe Body

A unique combination of tension strength, sealing performance, and clearance OD equip SuPreme LX with a capability that exceeds that of other connections. The additional thickness across the connection provided by forming the ends prior to machining produces triaxial performance in the connection that exceeds that obtainable with pipe body OD connections. This performance rivals that of connections with larger OD's.

Streamlined OD in the running and circulating direction combined with the clearance OD facilitate use in very slim holes.

BOX

This triaxial capability provides applications versatility for SuPreme LX not available from an FJ connection. In addition to drilling and production liners, SuPreme LX is suited for the more severe combined tension and pressure applications of production and intermediate casing strings – applications often thought to require connections with a larger OD than SuPreme LX. 100 %

MAC™-II Features Triaxial performance is achieved by machining pin and box on formed ends, creating thickness in the tension critical areas that exceed the pipe body thickness. Forming increases both tension strength and combined load performance.

PIN

Field-proven in HTHP wells, MAC-II is designed for use on high performance, heavy wall pipe. Thread pitch, height, and diameters are tailored to maximize strength and balance for each size and weight. Suitability for H2S service is achieved by preventing excessive stress levels. Radial clearance in the threads, along with the positive torque stop provided by the reverse angle torque shoulder, allows strict control of induced stresses. Residual stress created during forming is removed by properly stress relieving the affected area.

100% pipe body collapse strength is provided by the compound pressure energized metal external seal. Differential created between the well bore hydrostatic pressure and atmospheric pressure trapped in the thread annulus magnifies the contact stress on the metal seal, improving seal capability. Trouble-free make-up on even the heaviest pipe weights is ensured by use of rugged, coarse pitch threads combined with Hydril’s field-proven, deep stabbing, two-step design.

100% pipe body gas sealing reliability is provided by the compound pressure energized metal-to-metal internal pressure seal. Pressure-induced radial expansion of the small diameter step of the pin, permitted by radial clearance in the threads, magnifies the pressure containing contact stress on the metal seal.

Hooked threads provide high tension strength by resisting the tendency for radial disengagement, thus improving joint strength predictability.

Seal saver protects the pin seal from handling damage. Downhole tool damage to the face of the pin is reduced by the generous ID bevel on the pin.

Performance ratings account for API pipe body dimension variations. Forming done to the pipe in Hydril’s plant prior to stress relieving and machining ensures rated performance is attained. BOX

Streamlined OD in the running and circulating direction virtually eliminates downhole hang-up. There is no coupling face to interfere with smooth running in slim and deviated holes. U.S. and foreign patents apply.

MAC-II connections have the high pressure plus tension performance required for critical application production, tie-back, and intermediate casing strings used in high temperature, high pressure wells. This graphic depicts the von Mises triaxial equivalent stress curve for the combined tension and internal pressure quadrant. Along with the pipe body curve is the boundary for the MAC-II connection. Hydril forms the pipe ends prior to machining, generating tension critical cross-section planes with greater thickness than in the pipe body. This additional thickness produces good tension strength and reduces the hoop stress created by pressure. The hoop stresses in the critical areas created by internal pressure increase at a slower rate than the stresses in the pipe body. The greater thickness thus produces a substantially broader envelop, which encompasses much of the ten-

14

sion plus pressure quadrant and virtually all of the pressuredominated boundary. With pins and boxes machined on formed ends, rated tension strength is achieved with minimal dependence on actual pipe body dimensions. In addition, MAC-II connections have perfect (full form) hooked threads at the last engaged pin thread, retaining engagement at tension loads up to the connection parting load. Full tension strength is not dependent on retaining engagement of shallow runout threads (black threads). Through forming and the use of hooked full form threads at runout, the mode of failure and load at failure are more readily predictable. With this greater predictability for both tension and combined load performance, MAC-II can be safely designed into strings using a reduced margin for error. There is no need to use high tension safety factors typically used when designing with API connections.

Type 563 Casing Features Exceptional torque strength is developed through the simultaneous engagement of opposing flanks of the "double hooked" dovetail thread. The thread flanks provide a positive torque stop which virtually eliminates pin end ID restrictions caused by overtorque.

PIN

Excellent for geothermal, steam injection, and other high compression load applications. Elimination of stab flank clearance by preloading both stab and load flanks on make-up allows the Wedge Thread to cycle between very high tension, compression, and bending loads without relative pin to box thread movement. Compression strength is rated at 100% of the pipe body.

High tension and bending strength are developed using a run-out, dovetail thread machined on non-upset pipe. The dovetail thread with its double reverse flanks resists the tendency for radial disengagement of the partial depth threads inherent with high tension loads. Trouble free make-up is developed with the rugged, coarse pitch thread and steep taper for deep stabbing. Threads are field repairable. 100% rated metal-to-metal seal maintains gas sealing capability under high axial loads. The shallow angle run-out chamfer on the pin ID of heavier weights and the nosed and bored ID on the pin of lighter weights promote uniform stress under the seal around the full circumference of the connection.

100% rated thread seal is created by full form contact of the dovetail threads to contain internal and external hydrostatic pressure. Ideal for highly deviated, extended reach and other applications where rotation-while-bending capability is paramount. The dovetail Wedge Thread provides superior performance in combined torsion, bending, and tension or compression load environments.

Improved stress distribution in the coupling is provided by streamlining the axial load transfer across the coupling "J" area. There are no internal torque shoulder reaction forces to interrupt load transfer along the coupling length. Attention to stress distribution and low stress level makes the Type 563 suitable for sour service.

Visual confirmation of make-up is ensured by circumferential make-up band at pin thread runout. All couplings are beveled to reduce the potential for coupling face hang-up during running.

Identical couplings are used for all weights of an interchangeable thread profile. Separate couplings are not needed for each pipe weight.U.S. and foreign patents apply.

PIN

Series 500 Type 563 combines the excellent structural characteristics of the dovetail Wedge Thread with the high pressure gas sealing reliability of a metal-to-metal seal. This threaded and coupled connection is suitable for not only long production and intermediate casing strings, but also for the structurally demanding environments of extended reach, highly deviated, geothermal, and steam injection wells. The unique interlocking dovetail profile of the Wedge Thread creates a reverse angle on both the load flank and the stab flank. The "hooked" load flank permits the connection to carry high tension loads by resisting radial separation of the run-out threads. The "double hooked" dovetail flanks produce a radial stress component which supports the coupling in resisting high compression-induced hoop stress. This thread support for the coupling allows standard OD couplings to be used in high compression service. The interlocking dovetail threads also provide resistance to the simultaneous tension and compression created by bending. Application of final make-up torque simultaneously preloads the stab and load flanks. This preload allows the thread flanks

to retain engagement during high axial load cycling. Flank clearance, which would permit relative movement of pin and coupling during compression and tension cycling, is eliminated. The wedge effect, opposing flank engagement, produces a positive torque stop and prevents excessive rotation during make-up. The connection can tolerate the high torque loads of downhole rotation without creating a downhole restriction in the pin ends. The Type 563 connection has a history of use in severe applications. This includes sour service production casing strings in Canada and offshore California, high strength intermediate casing for a relief well in South America, and geothermal production strings in Mexico. Pins and couplings are phosphate coated for lubricant retention. Mill ends are end drifted after buck-on. Prior to installing full thread form protectors, a water-displacing, corrosion preventative compound is applied.

Tubular Products

Type 521 Casing Features Field proven in horizontal and extended reach wells, the wedging effect produces outstanding torsional strength for rotation-while-bending during wash down and cementing. The thread flanks prevent overtorque and the interlocking dovetail thread resists the simultaneous tension and compression created by bending.

PIN

100% pipe body collapse strength is created with the lubricant seal of the dovetail threads.

Visual confirmation of make-up is ensured by making up the box face to the circumferential, roller-stenciled make-up band on the pin.

Good structural capability is provided with tension and bending strengths of 65 - 75%, even on thin wall pipe. Compression strength exceeds tension.

High compression rating provided by the reverse angle stab flank of the dovetail threads makes the Type 521 suitable for use on slotted liners in geothermal and stream injection service.

A field-repairable seal is created by the dovetail thread and lubricant. The threads can be repaired on location, reducing the number of field rejects. The internal yield rating is equal to 100% of the pipe body rating.

Excellent for large diameter pipe, the dovetail thread eliminates thread pull-out, a common problem on thin-wall pipe. Type 521 offers an outstanding combination of structural capability and small OD on large diameter pipe. The coarse pitch thread and steep taper prevent cross-threading. Integral design eliminates concerns associated with coupled connections for mill-end leaks, damage during buck-on, and coupling material sourcing and traceability.

Exceptional torque strength permits washing and drilling down operations. Torque strength is developed through simultaneous engagement of the opposing flanks of the dovetail thread. ID restrictions created by overtorque are eliminated.

Stabbing resistance of the pin end face is maintained with the swaged, stress relieved, and bored ID. Pins are end drifted after manufacture and retain an ID larger than drift after make-up.

BOX

Streamlined OD in the running and circulating direction virtually eliminates downhole hang-up. There is no coupling face to interfere with smooth running in slim and deviated holes. U.S. and foreign patents apply.

The Hydril Series 500 Type 521 casing connection is unequaled in its combination of structural capabilities. It offers strengths in torque, bending, tension, and compression, all on a streamlined OD for clearance applications.

pull-out, each being all too common with conventional tapered casing connections. Type 521’s rugged coarsepitch threads resist cross-threading. The interlocking dovetail threads eliminate jump-out by preventing radial separation of the threads.

This casing connection excels in structurally demanding applications such as horizontal and extended reach wells. Its capability for rotation-while-bending is unsurpassed for non-upset connections. Type 521 has been run into medium and long radius horizontal and extended reach wells where it has been rotated comfortably during wash-down and cementing operations. Operators have also been successful drilling Type 521 liners into place in particularly difficult formations.

On large pipe sizes, Type 521 does not have to sacrifice clearance for strength. A string of 16” 84.00 lb/ft Type 521 was run to 9800’ in 17 1/2” hole and cemented back to surface.

Type 521 has been selected by many operators for use on gravel pack screens and slotted liners. Its high bending and torque strengths combined with a relatively low cost make Type 521 very attractive for sand control applications. The Type 521 solves two frequent problems encountered on large diameter casing: cross-threading and thread

18

Type 521 has been run successfully from floaters. It has been used extensively for surface and intermediate casing strings in the Gulf of Mexico. Other examples include a relief well where 13 3/8” Type 521 was set in 14 3/4” hole through a deviation of 12°/100 feet. Type 521 was also used in record water depths in the Gulf of Mexico on 15” surface casing set beneath a 16 3/4” stack. These are some of the applications that demonstrate the excellent structural and clearance features of the Type 521 connection.

Type 511 Utility Liner Features PIN

Tubular Products

Drilling and workover rig compatible with commonly used procedures and equipment. Nubbin OD permits use of standard NUE collar-type elevators. Washover pipe durability is developed with the rugged, coarse pitch thread and steep taper. The coarse pitch resists cross threading for reliable make-up.

100% pipe body collapse strength is created with the lubricant seal of the dovetail threads. Good structural capability is provided with tension and bending strengths of 55 - 65%, even on thin walled pipe. Compression strength exceeds tension.

High compression rating provided by the reverse angle stab flank of the dovetail threads makes the Type 511 suitable for use as slotted liners in geothermal and stream injection service.

A field-repairable seal is created by the dovetail thread and lubricant. The threads can be repaired on location, reducing the number of field rejects. The internal yield rating exceeds the API alternate hydrostatic test pressure.

Exceptional torque strength and a positive torque stop virtually eliminate pin end ID restrictions caused by over-torque. The wide torque range permits make-up with rig tongs.

Stabbing resistance of the pin end face is maintained with the nosed, stress relieved, and bored ID. Pins are end drifted after manufacture and retain an ID larger than drift after make-up.

Rotate and washover in deviated holes without fear of structural failure. The high strength of the dovetail Wedge Thread provides superior performance in combined torsion, bending, and tension or compression.

Salvage NUE tubing with the Type 511 connection. Damaged API connections can be recut to the non-upset Type 511 retaining suitable tension strength for many applications.

Economical running of drilling liners is achieved by using the rig equipment. The field serviceable sealing system and wide torque range lend the Type 511 to rig operations. BOX

The Hydril Series 500 Type 511 utility liner connection provides a unique combination of rugged structural performance and a pipe body OD. An integral connection machined on non-upset ends, its many uses include drilling liners, horizontal liners, casing repair, geothermal and steam injection slotted liners, tubing salvage, and washover pipe applications. The unique interlocking dovetail profile of the Wedge Thread creates a reverse angle on both the load flank and the stab flank. The “hooked” load flank permits the connection to carry high tension loads by resisting radial separation of the threads. The “double hooked” dovetail flanks produce a radial stress component that supports the box in resisting high compression-induced hoop stress. These interlocking dovetail threads provide resistance to the simultaneous tension and compression created by bending. Application of final make-up torque simultaneously pre-loads the stab and load flanks. This pre-load allows the thread flanks

to retain engagement during high axial load cycling. Flank clearance, which would permit relative movement of pin and box during cyclic bending, is eliminated. The wedge effect, opposing flank engagement, produces a positive torque stop and prevents excessive rotation during make-up. The connection can tolerate the high torque loads of downhole rotation during washover or rotating into the hole without creating a downhole restriction in the pin ends. With the coarse pitch threads, the profile not only resists handling and stabbing damage, but makes up readily without cross-threading. The connection’s ability to withstand repetitive assembly provides multiple use capability for washover and tubing salvage applications. The Type 511 utility liner connection adds a new dimension to liner applications with its good structural characteristics combined with a pipe body connection OD.

CS¨, PH-6, And PH-4 Features

Tubular Products

H2S service suitability is ensured by combining the low stress profile of non-interference threads with fixed make-up position control of a shouldered connection.

PIN

Trouble-free make-up is routine with Hydril’s two-step, non-interference thread style. Machining the threads on two different diameters provides very deep stabbing for stable make-up alignment.

With a worldwide reputation for durability, CS, PH-6, and PH-4 are unmatched for production as well as workstring applications such as drilling cement, milling, fishing, and high pressure drill stem testing. This durability is produced by combining the reusability of non-interference threads, metal seals, and substantial torque shoulders. 100% pipe body tension strength is produced by machining pin and box on a hot-forged upset. Connection critical areas exceed the pipe body area.

Superior galling resistance of the non-interference thread profile has been proven in numerous installations of 9% and 13% chromium stainless steel strings.

High torque strength is provided by the 30° reverse angle shoulder. This positive torque stop ensures the connection makes up to the same position every time. The shoulder also provides excellent resistance to compression and bending loads. Preload applied to the shoulder and thread load flanks during make-up allows the connection to withstand high loads without danger of unseating the seals.

Reserve torque strength is provided by the 90° intermediate shoulder. Close tolerance control between shoulders ensures the intermediate will function as a secondary shoulder. Corrosion protection continuity is provided by the optional CB feature. The virtually inert CB ring creates the corrosion resistant bridge between pin and box plastic coating without detracting from overall connection performance. The protected location of the CB ring along with the controlled “squeeze” on make-up allow multiple trips without replacing the ring.

The 100% external pressure seal is created at the torque shoulder. This metal seal also provides a pressure energized secondary internal pressure seal. Metal-to-metal internal pressure seal is rated at 100% of the pipe body. The compound pressure energizing produces a highly reliable high pressure gas-tight seal.

Improved connection coatability is provided by the ID chamfers which eliminate the sharp plastic coated corners susceptible to chipping.

Special clearance OD retains 100% tension and pressure ratings.

Multiple string completions and hang-up free running are ensured by the streamlined OD configuration of the upset and having the same turned OD of both pin and box.

BOX

Flowstream continuity is maintained with the bored ID and recess-free bore configuration. The erosion-corrosion associated with a turbulent flowstream is minimized. U.S. and foreign patents apply.

Over the past 40 years, these integral connections have earned a worldwide reputation as the measure for performance for workstring and production tubing applications. Hydril supplements this performance with technical and commercial assistance to support your production operations. Hydril pioneered procedures and concepts used for product qualification testing. By 1951, Hydril had conducted tests on the CS connection that included load to failure tests, torque limit tests, and pressure tests on isolated seals. In 1953, Hydril conducted thermal cycling tests on the PH-6 connection. Hydril continues to employ testing to define connection performance limits. Feedback from field operations and data gained from numerous product tests is used to develop and implement improvements to the product line. Hydril’s development work today will produce tomorrow’s patented advances to continue this product evolution. Hydril’s sales organization provides extensive applications support for your well planning options. Technical assistance is available for not only connection performance, application recommendations, and running and handling procedures but also for areas of emerging technologies such as horizontal drilling, production risers, steam injection and geothermal

PIN 100% pipe body ratings for tension and bending are provided by machining pin and box on a hot forged internal-external upset. Connection critical areas exceed the pipe body area.

Exceptional torque strength is developed through the simultaneous engagement of opposing flanks of the dovetail thread. The thread flanks provide a positive torque stop which virtually eliminates pin end ID restrictions caused by overtorque.

Stress distribution and low stress levels make the Type 533 suitable for sour service. Type 533 is also recommended for use on 9% and 13% chromium steels.

Workstring durability is developed with the rugged, coarse pitch thread and steep taper for deep stabbing. 100% compression rating is provided by the reverse angle stab flank of the dovetail threads.

Pipe body collapse strength is created with the lubricant seal of the dovetail threads. The threads also provide a secondary internal pressure seal rated at 100% of the pipe body.

Ideal for highly deviated, extended reach, and other applications demanding superior rotation-while-bending capability. The dovetail Wedge Thread provides excellent performance in combined torsion, bending, and tension or compression.

100% rated metal-to-metal seal maintains gas sealing capability under high axial and bending loads. The shallow angle chamfer on the bored ID of the pin promotes uniform stress under the seal around the full circumference of the connection.

Corrosion protection continuity is provided by the optional CB feature. The inert CB ring creates the corrosion resistant bridge between pin and box plastic coating without impairing overall connection performance. The CB ring is recessed, protecting it from wireline and flow stream damage.

Flow stream continuity is maintained with the recess-free streamlined ID configuration. The erosioncorrosion associated with a turbulent flow stream is minimized. Type 533 is interchangeable with the Type 563 and the Type 503 connections. Damaged Type 533 connections can be recut to the nonupset threaded and coupled Type 563 retaining interchangeability.

Streamlined, clearance OD facilitates running, pulling, and circulating and eliminates downhole coupling face hang-up.

BOX

The Hydril Series 500 Type 533 Tubing connection is an integral connection machined on hot forged internal-external upset ends for use in the most demanding applications. It combines the excellent structural characteristics of the dovetail Wedge Thread machined on upset ends with the high pressure gas sealing reliability of a metal-to-metal seal. Series 500 tubing connections have been used for both production tubing applications and for work string service. Application of final make-up torque simultaneously preloads

the stab and load flanks. This preload allows the thread flanks to retain engagement during high axial load cycling. Flank clearance, which would permit relative movement of pin and coupling during compression and tension cycling, is eliminated. The wedge effect, opposing flank engagement, produces a positive torque stop and prevents excessive rotation during makeup. The connection can tolerate the high torque loads of downhole rotation during workovers without creating a downhole restriction in the pin ends. With less than 31/2 threads per inch, the profile not only resists handling and stabbing damage, but makes up readily without cross-threading. The connection’s ability to withstand repetitive assembly provides multiple trip capability. It has been routinely used for workover operations such as drilling-out cement, milling, fishing, and drill stem testing. For plastic coated strings, the Type 533 is available with the optional CB feature.

Type 563 Tubing Features

Tubular Products

PIN Exceptional torque strength is developed through the simultaneous engagement of opposing flanks of the dovetail thread. The thread flanks provide a positive torque stop which virtually eliminates pin end ID restrictions caused by over-torque.

High tension and bending strengths are developed using a run-out, dovetail thread machined on non-upset pipe. The dovetail thread with its double reverse flanks resists the tendency for radial disengagement of the partial depth threads. Stress distribution and low stress levels make the Type 563 suitable for sour service. Type 563 is also recommended for use on corrosion resistant alloys.

100% rated compression strength is provided by the dovetail threads. 100% collapse rating is created with the lubricant seal of the dovetail threads. The threads also provide a secondary internal pressure seal rated at 100% of the pipe body.

Trouble free make-up is developed with the rugged, coarse pitch thread and steep taper for deep stabbing. With the galling resistance of low interference threads, the Type 563 is well suited for use on high alloy materials.

Corrosion protection continuity is provided by the optional CB feature. The inert CB ring creates the corrosion resistant bridge between pin and box plastic coating without detracting from overall connection performance. The CB ring is recessed, protecting it from wireline and flow stream damage.

100% rated metal-to-metal seal maintains gas sealing capability under high axial loads. The shallow angle run-out chamfer on the pin ID of heavier weights and the nosed and bored ID on the pin of lighter weights promote uniform stress under the seal around the full circumference of the connection.

Special clearance OD retains full tension and pressure ratings of the connection. All couplings are beveled to reduce the potential for coupling face hang-up during running.

Flow stream continuity is maintained with the recess-free streamlined ID configuration. The erosioncorrosion associated with a turbulent flow stream is minimized. This same Type 563 Tubing configuration is also ordered as Type 563RFB or Type 563-GS.

Visual confirmation of make-up is ensured by the circumferential make-up band at pin thread run-out.

Type 563 is interchangeable with the Type 503 and Type 533 connections.

PIN

The Hydril Series 500 Type 563 Tubing connection combines the excellent structural characteristics of the dovetail Wedge Thread with the high pressure gas sealing reliability of a metal seal. This threaded and coupled connection has been used for both production tubing applications and for work string service. The Type 563 Tubing connection has been used on carbon steel in sour environments as well as on high alloy and stainless steels. The unique interlocking dovetail profile of the Wedge Thread creates a reverse angle on both the load flank and the stab flank. The "hooked" load flank permits the connection to carry high tension loads by resisting radial separation of the shallow depth run-out threads. The "double hooked" dovetail flanks produce a radial stress component which supports the coupling in resisting high compression-induced hoop stress. These interlocking dovetail threads provide resistance to the simultaneous tension and compression created by bending. Application of final makeup torque simultaneously preloads the

stab and load flanks. With less than 3-1/2 threads per inch, the profile not only resists handling and stabbing damage, but makes up readily without cross-threading. The connection's ability to withstand repetitive assembly provides multiple trip capability. It has been routinely used for workover operations such as drilling-out cement, milling, fishing, and drill stem testing. For plastic coated strings, the Type 563 is available with the optional CB feature.

Type 501 and Type 531 Features

Tubular Products

PIN Exceptional torque strength is developed through the simultaneous engagement of opposing flanks of the dovetail thread. The thread flanks provide a positive torque stop which virtually eliminates pin end ID restrictions caused by over-torque.

100% pipe body ratings for tension and bending are provided by machining pin and box on upset pipe. Type 501 is machined on API EUE pipe which Hydril swages and stress relieves to ensure rated performance. This same profile machined on internal/external upset ends is the Type 531 connection (not shown.)

Workstring durability is developed with the rugged, coarse pitch thread and steep taper for deep stabbing and to prevent cross-threading. Type 501 and Type 531 have been used for milling, drilling cement, jarring, fishing, and diamond coring operations.

Streamlined OD in the pulling direction created by the pin shoulder and box OD chamfer make the Type 501 and Type 531 suitable for multiple completions. A wear indicator is provided by the separation at the box face. After extended use as work tubing, when the separation reaches 0.1 mm (.004”), the pin and box should be set aside for recut.

100% compression rating is provided by the reverse angle stab flank of the dovetail threads. 100% collapse rating is created with the lubricant seal of the dovetail threads.

100% rated internal pressure seal is produced by the dovetail threads. The seal maintains sealing capability under high tension, compression, and bending loads. Damaged threads can be field repaired.

Ideal for highly deviated, extended reach, and other applications demanding superior rotation-while-bending capability. The dovetail Wedge Thread provides excellent performance in combined torsion, bending, and tension or compression.

Pin face reduces stabbing damage. Minor damage to the face, which does not function as a shoulder, can be field repaired.

Clearance OD facilitates running, pulling, and circulating and eliminates downhole coupling face hang-up.

Type 501 and Type 531 are interchangeable with the Type 561 connection. Damaged connections can be recut to the non-upset threaded and coupled Type 561 retaining interchangeability. U.S. and foreign patents apply.

CONNECTION Turned OD

Type 561 Features PIN High tension and bending strengths are developed using a run-out, dovetail thread machined on non-upset pipe. The dovetail thread with its double reverse flanks resists the tendency for radial disengagement of the partial depth threads. Trouble free make-up is developed with the rugged, coarse pitch thread and steep taper for deep stabbing. With the galling resistance of low interference threads, the Type 561 is suited for use on alloy steels.

100% compression rating is provided by the reverse angle stab flank of the dovetail threads.

Corrosion protection continuity is provided by the optional CB feature. The inert CB ring creates the corrosion resistant bridge between pin and box plastic coating without impairing overall connection performance. The CB ring is recessed, protecting it from wireline and flow stream damage.

100% rated internal pressure seal is produced by the dovetail threads. The seal maintains sealing capability under high tension, compression, and bending loads. Damaged threads can be field repaired.

Tubular Products

Exceptional torque strength is developed through the simultaneous engagement of opposing flanks of the dovetail thread. The thread flanks provide a positive torque stop which virtually eliminates pin end ID restrictions caused by over-torque.

100% collapse rating is created with the lubricant seal of the dovetail threads.

Special clearance OD retains full tension and pressure ratings of the connection. All couplings are beveled to reduce the potential for coupling face hang-up during running.

Flow stream continuity is maintained with the recess-free streamlined ID configuration. The erosion-corrosion associated with a turbulent flow stream is minimized.

Visual confirmation of make-up is ensured by the circumferential make-up band at pin thread run-out.

Type 561 is interchangeable with the Type 501 and Type 531 tubing connections.

Series 500™ Wedge Thread™ Drill Pipe Tool Joint Features

Tubular Products

PIN

Exceptional torque strength for drilling in highly deviated holes is developed through the simultaneous engagement of opposing flanks of the Wedge Thread. The thread flanks provide the positive torque stop.

Hydraulic efficiency is improved by maintaining a large ID through the tool joint. Restrictive IDs are eliminated because torque strength is not limited by the thickness under the last engaged thread of the pin.

Stress created by torque is distributed throughout the length of the thread. The thread stab flank provides the reaction surface to the equal and opposite force generated on the thread load flank when torque is applied. The reaction surface on conventional tool joints, the torque shoulder, is eliminated. This prevents the concentration of stress at the last pin thread inherent in conventional tool joints.

Torque strength is independent of the tool joint OD. With the torque strength developed by the flanks of the Wedge Thread, drilling wear on the OD or ID of the tool joint will not reduce torque strength. The torque strength rating of the drill string is retained for the life of the tool joint.

The tapered, two-step thread profile stabs deep and makes up easily. Trouble free make-up is developed with the rugged, coarse pitch thread and steep taper. The Wedge Thread tool joint exhibits the same field proven stabbing and make-up characteristics of the old Hydril Type “IF”, Type “SH”, and Type “F” drill pipe tool joints.

A wear indicator is provided by the separation at the box face. After extended use, wear in the connection will permit additional travel of the pin into the box. When the separation reaches 0.1 mm (.004”), the pin and box should be set aside for recut. The bevel provides an indication of OD wear. The tool joint retains full rated tension and torque strength down to the bevel diameter.

Pipe body sealing capability for both internal and external pressure is provided by the Wedge Thread and lubricant. Damaged threads can be field repaired, significantly reducing shop repair frequency. There is no torque shoulder seal that can unload during high tension load applications. The Wedge Thread retains sealing performance under high axial loads.

Excellent for highly deviated, extended reach, and horizontal applications where high bending loads exist. Pre-loading both stab and load flanks at make up allows the Wedge Thread to cycle between the tension and compression associated with bending with minimal pin to box movement.

Plastic coating can be applied to the end of pin and box shoulder since the pin end does not contact the box shoulder. Plastic coating is protected since this shoulder gap will not close up before the wear indicator. With the large ID through the tool joint, wireline damage and coating discontinuities are reduced.

Worldwide repair and accessory threading facilities are available to ensure peak performance and maximum life.

Annular Blowout Preventers Hydril’s excellence in blowout preventers is based on more than 65 years’ experience. There is a Hydril annular BOP design to meet any operational requirement on surface or subsea. Hydril ® BOPs provide quick, GX positive closure with simple controls, to keep drilling fluids in the hole when normal or abnormal pressures occur.

BOP also contributes to savings in maintenance time and cost.

• Critical application BOPs meet highest industry standards including API 16A, Det Norske Veritas, the American Bureau of Shipping or Lloyds of London. GK

Pressure Control

• Pressure vessel soundness is assured by the use of acoustic emission monitoring, a Hydril pioneered technique. Every BOP is tested with this technique before shipment. • Pressure testing operating chambers to rated BOP pressure is another test administered to all Hydril annular BOPs. This confirms strength, reliability and product safety before delivery.

Compact Blowout Preventers Lighter Weight Lower Height

Pressure Control

Ideal for both rig upgrades and new builds where space is limited. Hydril’s compact blowout preventers are typically 15 percent shorter than comparable conventional dual ram BOPs, and more than 20 percent lighter. Here’s an example:

Conventional Dual RAM BOP 18 3/4 inch bore 15,000 psi pressure Typical weight: 70,000 pounds Typical height: 89 inches

No compromise in operating capabilities. Hydril’s compact BOPs provide the same reliability and long service life the industry has come to respect in its standard size ram BOPs.

• Easy field maintenance: Patented bonnet seal permits low torque makeup, less time to open bonnet and access ram blocks. Fewer bonnet bolts further reduce maintenance time. • Reduced downtime: Upper seal seats and bottom wear plates can be replaced in service. No need to disassemble the stack, remove it from the rig and ship to an offsite repair facility for time-consuming welding, stress-relief and re-machining. The hydraulic manifold is also field replaceable.

38

Compact Dual RAM BOP 18 3/4 inch bore 15,000 psi pressure Typical weight: 53,100 pounds Typical height: 75 inches

• Increased fluid flow capacity: Hydraulic manifold design increases fluid flow capacity through the hinge by as much as 40 percent. • Operating flexibility: Hydraulic manifold installs on either side of the BOP, permitting change of bonnet opening side as required to fit various stack configurations.

High Performance Chokes Operating Principle: The Impingement Effect

Pressure Control

The heart of Hydril’s choke is the internal trim design. A unique nozzle configuration directs flow through various sized opposing ports, forcing the flow to impinge upon itself within the nozzle. The impingement effect dissipates the destructive energy associated with many oil and gas wells. The single largest contributor to choke valve failure is energy associated with high pressure drops. Hydril’s trim allows the valve to dissipate rather than absorb this destructive force by containing the energy within the nozzle. This operating principle reduces possible erosion damage to the valve body and internal components. The nozzle, also referred to as a cage, is the valve’s hardest component. It is typically made from a specialized grade of tungsten carbide, but, for less severe applications, other materials are available.

Hydril high performance chokes are designed for moderate to severe well conditions. Applications include high pressure drops, high

42

flowing velocities, corrosive fluids, H2S and CO2, low temperatures, steam injection and wells with heavy erosion potential.

Hydril was first to use the cage trim design in a production choke: this was the BFB introduced in 1978. Hydril’s PRB, developed for high flow rate, medium pressure applications, was introduced in 1984. Today, these chokes are in service worldwide in high pressure wells, steam injection wells, critical subsea wells and sensitive environmental regions. Hydril provides engineering assistance and field service. Engineers are ready to assist in selecting appropriate materials for valve body, seals and trim for unique well conditions. Hydril provides continual valve performance evaluation. For quality assurance, valves are manufactured in accordance with API 6A or 17D, and PSL-2 through 4, PR-2. Special requirements can also be accommodated.

Both trims are interchangeable in the field without modification of the valve body. Trim size and material can be changed to alter flow characteristics and adjust to changing well conditions without changing the body. Hydril’s patented Stem Seal Stack is employed in both trim designs. U-shaped, spring energized lip seals provide bi-directional sealing with constant radial loading. Design also allows redundant sealing in a standard seal gland. These resilient

seals are suitable for extreme temperature ranges and have a broad range of fluid compatibility.

Pressure Control

BFB provides positive shut-off with Hydril’s patented seat seal. When flow cone contacts seat seal, valve is closed. Continuing to move the flow cone closed achieves a bubble tight shut-off. Closing movement compresses seat seal outward and radially into full contact with flow cone.

PRB is Hydril’s trim for moderate to severe application. Plug movement is guided by the nozzle. This feature provides steady throttling, ensures smooth operation and directs flow toward nozzle center to minimize wear. Extended nozzle design contains destructive forces within the trim for extra downstream body protection. Balanced trim designs of each valve reduce thrust load on the stem. As a result, torque needed to operate valve is substantially reduced. Both valves feature large annulus areas around trim which reduce fluid momentum as it enters valve, decreasing potential for erosion.

Kellyguard™ Valves

Pressure Control

Hydril’s Kellyguard valves are manually operated ball valves used to close flow to the bore of the drill string and stem. Kellyguard valves facilitate well control and present mud spillage. They attach above and below the kelly to close the bore to upward flow from the wellbore, or downward flow during connection.

46

sealing rated pressure. Downward pressure equalizes well pressure below the ball. It reduces friction between upper seat and ball, minimizing torque needed to rotate the ball and open the valve.

All interchangeable internal parts are stainless steel for low maintenance. They resist corrosion and provide long service life. Lubrication is not necessary except during assembly. In most cases Kellyguard valves have enough length on each end to recut connections in case of thread or shoulder damage.

Metal-to-metal seals are effective under high or low pressure. Upper seat and ball seal high pressure from below. With low pressure from below, the lower seat spring forces the ball against the upper seat for secure sealing. In the crank assembly, a replaceable wear sleeve protects the body and provides opening, even while a long service life.

Checkguard¨ Valves Hydril’s Checkguard valves are drop-in check valves for the drill string. They remain topside until needed and are retrievable by wire line. They give drillers easy control of drill pipe pressure. They prevent upward flow through the drill pipe, yet allow fluid to be pumped downward to circulate the well.

While tripping, Checkguard valves contain upward well bore pressure in the drill pipe, allowing the top connection to be open. Checkguard valves use a spring and ball design. Fluid can be pumped through the valve from the top. When fluid tries to flow from bottom to top, it is sealed by the spring-loaded ball against the seat. A large rubber packer provides secure sealing. It is engaged by the tapered body. The seal gets tighter in direct proportion to the pressure below.

Pressure Control

Left, landing sub is installed in lower end of drill string while tripping into the hole. Center, check valve is dropped into an open tool joint and lodges in landing sub. Right, retrieving tool is lowered by wire line, unlatches check valve and lifts it to the surface. Need to trip drill string is eliminated.

Checkguard valves control upward pressure in the annulus and drill pipe while stripping drill pipe. Latching check valves into the landing sub contains pressure in the drill pipe.

Far left, Checkguard valve is not subject to wear as many downhole valves are. It remains topside until needed and only the landing sub is installed. Next, as valve sits in the landing sub, downward flow areas are maximized for high flow capacity. Next, ball closes against upward pressure to 10,000 psi. Far right, check valve retrieved by wire line.

Prior to shearing drill pipe, install Checkguard valves to protect against the release of well pressure. Later, establishing well control is simplified, as blind rams and annular BOPs can be opened without upward flows through the drill pipe.

Specification Range Landing sub O.D. ranges in sizes from 4 1/8” through 8”. Check valve O.D. ranges from 1 11/16” to 3”. Check valve weight is light, from 5 to 23 pounds.
