T is a ve ry popular beli e f that cards wer e inve nted in o r de r to amus e King Charle s V I of France at a time when that monarch was mentally unstabl e Th is lege nd however like so many pretty sto ri e s of the past h as no foundation in fact as cards w e re known long b e fore the mad monarch s days I t is tru e that a cour t miniature paint e r named Grin r o n u r did paint or o iginat e som e cards whi ch he n e g introduced to the King but ca r ds were fir st us e d in th e E as t in ve ry anci e nt days and it is a curious fact that the other great world popular indoor gam e Ch ess also originated in the East and is still played to day by m e ans o f a pack of cards I t also se e ms obvious that cards re ach e d the West in the same way and by the same rout e as Ch e ss probably thr ough the gipsi e s that strange unconque rable East e rn rac e o f wande re rs whose actual origin still baffles our researches Naturally a rac e of people with no s e ttled home or nationality would fin d much difi c ul ty in moving th e ir pe rsonal belongings from place to place and would appre cia t e any amus e m e nt that could be reduced to the form o f a pack o f cards ,

nsure the de tection by marking the cards at on e end by a little dot Usually only thirty two cards are us e d for fortune telling— the Twos Thre es Fours Five s and Sixes b e ing thrown o u t I n o n e m e thod that will b e d e tail e d thirty six cards are us e d— the four Twos are added The Tarot pack consists of s e venty e ight cards but in some o f the de lineations only a par t o f these are us e d Ge nerally the meanings o f the cards remain fair ly con stant for all the methods Thus a good omened card is always such— but the particular o r S pecific meaning o f it is al tered somewhat by the method o f using it For example the Ten o fSpad e s by o n e method means losses and if re vers e d tears in anothe r grief and if reversed passing trouble The Seven of Spades may m e an hope and if reve rsed friendship o r it may be resolve and if reversed difli c u l ty in love a ffairs These me an in gs or values of the cards sho ul d be well studi ed and committ e d t o m e mory so that whe n any particul ar card appears a key t o its interpretation is at once presented t o the mind of the reader The word k e y is used advise dl y because these terms or val ues are not to be take n as the absolute determination of the cards but rather as a gui de t o the spe cific value s in relation In this conn e ction it is as w e ll to not e the m e anings of combinations I t is e asy to imagin e that He arts ge n e r ally are as sociat e d with love and marriage This suit is also clos e ly related to domestic matt e rs and to the soci al ameniti e s o f life Diamonds are ge ne ral ly associated with fin ancial considerations and though as has al r e ady be e n suggested they are modifie d by other cards coming close to them they are usually emblems of a favourable char act e r Clubs are almost always good Successful enterpr ises

T he cards s urrounding the Heart K ing are included in

the right count in the above Table I t will be noticed that by following this full method o f using the cards that fou r key c ards ar e reached twice over they obviously are the most important They are the Three o f Diamonds showing quarrels and legal troubles the Nine o f Hearts showing mon e y and position ; the Seven o f Hearts re pres e nting a f al se friend and the T en o f Spades indicating grief and trouble This con firms our previous readi ng that the enquirer will have much trouble and diflicul ty but will eventually win hi s way through I n the above Table it will also b e noticed that certain cards appe ar once only— they are o f little import ance t o the enquirer Those that app e ar twice are seldom worth considering but the re ally important are those that appear three or four times — the latter bein g ve ry rare o f course T here are seven cards however that appear three times in the present expe riment and we quote them in full .

useless I n the first method the rej ected cards are used in order to complete the necessary odd number for the Divination but that is never done under the present system Under the origin al plan it wi l l often happe n that the t hree car ds are al l of diffe r e nt suits and mus t the r efore all be dis carded That is not the case by the pre s e nt simpler method as the highest card is chosen each t ime irres pectiv e of suit Also you be gin wi th three car ds which makes a further difference Thus it happens that out of thirty two cards you are bound to have at l east twe lve car ds in your row and if you have t urn e d up three of a sui t o r thr e e o f a val ue at any time the numb e r wi ll be in c reas e d Retain th e las t two cards in your hand and coun t the cards face upwards in your mystic row t o see if you have an O dd number I f s o discar d the two cards left ov e r and proceed as be fore t o give your Divination by picking up the outside card from e ach end If howe ver the num ber of your row is even see if th e type card ( r e pres e nting the enquirer ) is among them if not pick it from the di scards an d add it to the extreme right o f yo ur row If the type card is al ready there se e if the Wish card ( Nin e o f Hearts ) is al so pr esent ; if not yo u add it to the end at th e ri ght I f both o f these are in the row before you look for the enquirer s Thought card i e the Jack o f the same sui t as th e type card that repr e sents the enquirer I f all three o f these cards are in the ro w the n add the higher of the two cards remain ing in your hand — but if by any perve rse C hanc e they are both o f the same value th e n the Fates are not propitious and the enquirer must come again on some other day as the ro w mu st consist o f an O dd number o f cards .

Now com e s the part that ne e ds a l ittl e c are and thought but when understood it is really quite simple The rough s quar e represents a lunar month beyond which th e card s will not guide you and nothing can be done in the way of divination un less you can fix the position of the two ca rds exposed when the pack w as cut — as a lready e xplain e d th e first of the s e r e prese nts the Enquirer and the s e cond his or h e r Thoughts Glanc e car e fully over the exposed cards and see if e ithe r or both of th e s e p e rsonal cards have b e e n exposed in the lunar squar e If you are fortunate and both personal cards are shown on th e tabl e you can at once mak e your d e cision in the way t o be e xplain e d later But if you find only o n e pe rsonal card exposed you are allowed to continue the pre paration in the hop e that the second card will tur n up b e for e you read what th e card s fo r e t e ll You must note the row in which yo u fin d the one p e r sonal car d b e caus e that particular row must not b e touched So if t hi s p e rsonal card falls in the n o r any row above it bottom row you can do no more and must r e ad the car ds as th e y lie on the table If however it is in the thi r d row from the top this would leave the bottom r o w fre e to b e alt e r e d if in the s e cond row you would have th e two bottom rows at your disposal whil e if it falls in the top row the n you can change the following twe nty—one cards \Vh at e ve r it may b e o n e two or thr e e rows you take up th e u n u sed po r tion of the pack and plac e extra cards upon the alr eady exposed car ds on the table and go o n to the tw e nty e ight h car d To make this cl e ar suppose o n e p e rsonal card is shown in th e t Op row of the o riginal de al You now commence on the fir st card of the s e cond row ,

The Seventh is al s o sympathetic with the First and Fourth We will now deal with the second group o f seven cards Unfortunately numbers Eight and Eleven are often reversed ; one early accoun t gives Justic e for numbe r Eight and Courage for El e ven another s hifting the m about I t is impossible nowadays t o decide which is correct though pe rsonally we prefer number E leven for Justice Card number Eight then we will call Courage — it signifies energy or action and generally is a successful and fortunat e card Reversed it does not necessarily mean ill success but abuse of power The Ninth card is known as the Hermit and shows prudence and wisdom but if the other c ards are not good it may merely mean trickery and lying Reversed it shows secrecy fear or needless caution Card number Ten represents the Wheel o f Fort une and it signifies D e st iny I f this card tur ns up the decision will concern some near event and whichever way matters go the res u lt will be fin al and fat e ful I f reve rsed t his card shows an excessive result — abundance su pe rfluity far more than is needful Wh e n consid e ring the Eleventh card we mus t recall w hat was said above — taking Courage for number E ight we giv e J u stice for number Eleven This does not mean Law in o ur mod e rn use o f the word Justice but the triumph o f right The diviner can only predict that right will succeed an d must leave it t o the consci e nce o f the enquirer t o decide wh e ther his o wn cause is indicate d The Twelfth card is a most curious one and is kn o wn as the Hanged Man but for some unknown re as on he is r epresented as han gi ng by o ne foot though n o t apparently .
