Reseña biográfica iswanathan Anand nació en Madrás (India) el 11 de diciembre de 1969. Con­ quistó el título de maestro in­ ternacional a los dieciséis años (1985). En 1987 se proclama campeón mundial juvenil y en 1988 consigue el título de gran maestro. De un carácter extrovertido y risueño, Anand parece el re­ lajado tenista de algún torneo internacional. Amable, razona­ blemente culto, simpático, es muy popular en los círculos aje­ drecísticos de alto nivel. Su tercer puesto en el Inter­ zonal de Manila le abrió las puertas para la fase de candi­ datos, en cuya primera elimi­ natoria debió enfrentarse al ru­ so Alexei Dreiev, del que dio buena cuenta en su ciudad na­ tal, venciéndole rotundamente. En la siguiente eliminatoria de­ bió enfrentarse a Karpov, al que dio más de un susto, aunque al final la experiencia del s ub­ campeón mundial se impuso por la mínima diferencia. Su gran golpe a la escena in­ ternacional, con todo, se pro­ duciría en el torneo de Reggio Emilia (1992), un fortísimo evento que ganó, superando a

los mejores del mundo y ven­ ciendo en su propia confronta­ ción al campeón mundial, Kas­ parov. El ajedrez de Anand es un tanto alegre y ¡supersónico!, co­ nociéndosele como el jugador más rápido del tablero profe­ sional. Muchas de sus partidas registraban, hasta no hace mu­ cho, poco más de media hora en su reloj, lo que, si en algu­ nos casos no le impidió la vic­ toria, en otros le llevó a catas­ tróficas e inesperadas derrotas, incluso en plena apertura. Con el tiempo ha ido reposando un tanto su febril ritmo de juego, quizá porque, como él mismo dice, "será que me estoy ha­ ciendo viejo". Su estilo es emprendedor y versátil, eminentemente tácti­ co, pues su gran capacidad de cálculo le permite maravillosas demostraciones que rozan la magia técnica. El futuro de Anand no pue­ de ser más brillante. Es el me­ jor ajedrecista del continente asiático y, junto con la actual campeona del mundo, Xie Jun, parece haberse empeñado en ha­ cer que el rey de los juegos re­ grese a sus orígenes. 7
