ADVERBIOS EN INGLÉS English Adverbs

Los adverbios son palabras que describen a verbos, son palabras que complementan a una oración o información comunicada, pudiendo modificar al verbo, adjetivo u otro adverbio si es posible. Los adverbios en inglés se pueden clasificar en las siguientes categorías: Adverbios de modo, adverbios de lugar, adverbios de tiempo, adverbios de duración, adverbios de frecuencia, adverbios de orden, adverbios de grado, adverbios de certeza.

Adverbios de Modo Adverbs of Manner

Utilizamos estos adverbios cuando queremos expresar la manera en que se realiza una acción. En general se forman agregando "ly" al final del adjetivo. La mayoría terminan en 'ly' que equivale a la terminación 'mente' n castellano. Generalmente derivan de adjetivos.

También hay excepciones a esta regla:

Adverbios de Lugar Adverbs of Place

Los adverbios de lugar nos permiten indicar dónde se realiza una acción: here, there, above, everywhere, away.

here - aquí there - allá near - cerca nearby - cerca far - lejos away – lejos

Ejemplos:

Robert has broken his leg, so he has to stay home. Robert se ha roto la pierna, entonces tiene que quedarse en casa.

The actress had lived abroad for two years before she returned. La actriz había vivido en el extranjero durante dos años antes de regresar.

Mr. Thomson does business in his country and overseas. El Sr. Thomson hace negocios en su país y en el extranjero.

The drunk was near the lake when he suddenly fell in. El borracho estaba cerca del lago cuando de repente se cayó adentro.

Mr. Jones is out at the moment. He'll be back in two hours.

Adverbios de Tiempo Adverbs of Time

Cuando queremos expresar en qué momento se realiza una acción, utilizamos los adverbios de tiempo: now, early, late, soon, already, tomorrow.

early - temprano late - tarde earlier - antes, más temprano later - luego, más tarde then - luego, entonces before - antes after - después afterwards – luego

Ejemplos: Daniel usually wakes up early every morning. Daniel por lo general se despierta temprano cada mañana.

Joe and Pam arrived late last night. Joe y Pam llegaron tarde anoche.

If you want to catch the 7 o'clock bus, you must leave earlier. Si quieres agarrar el autobús de las 7, debes marcharte más temprano.

I am busy right now. Please call me back later. Estoy ocupado ahora mismo. Por favor llámeme más tarde. We're going to the party, so we'll see you then. Vamos a la fiesta, entonces te veremos entonces.

Adverbios de Duración Adverbs of Duration

Son aquellos que indican cuánto tiempo dura una acción determinada y responden a las preguntas de tipo "for how long?": all day, for a while.

all day - todo el día all week - toda la semana the whole morning - la mañana entera for a while - por un rato/tiempo for five minutes - por cinco minutos for two years - por dos años

Ejemplos:

Bob's been studying all day and now has a headache. Bob ha estado estudiando todo el día y ahora tiene un dolor de cabeza.

The painter has been working on a portrait all week. El pintor ha estado trabajando en un retrato toda la semana.

The mechanic's been fixing my car the whole morning. El mecánico ha estado fijando mi coche la mañana entera.

They had waited for Jim for a while before they left. Ellos habían esperado a Jim un rato antes de que se marcharan.

You should play the guitar for five minutes every day. Usted debería tocar la guitarra durante cinco minutos cada día.

Adverbios de Frecuencia Adverbs of Frequency

Estos adverbios nos indican la periodicidad con la que se realiza una acción. Para saberlo, preguntamos "how often?" (always, never, often, once a day).

always - siempre usually - habitualmente frequently - frecuentemente often - a menudo sometimes -algunas veces occasionally - ocasionalmente rarely - casi nunca seldom - casi nunca Ejemplos: I always have corn flakes for breakfast. Siempre como copos de maíz para el desayuno.

They usually spend the summer in the mountains. Ellos por lo general pasan el verano en las montañas.

We frequently water our garden when it's hot. Con frecuencia regamos nuestro jardín cuando está caluroso.

You often dine at Peter's, don't you? ¿Usted a menudo cena en lo de Peter, verdad?

Adverbios de Orden Adverbs of Order

Se utilizan para expresar el orden en que se suceden los hechos, nos ayudan a enumerar: firstly, secondly, lastly, finally.

first - primero at first - al principio initially - inicialmente first of all - antes que nada in the first place - en primer lugar secondly - en segundo lugar thirdly - en tercer lugar fourthly - en cuarto lugar

Ejemplos: First, she screamed, then she ran away. Primero ella gritó y luego huyó.

At first I liked the book but then it got very boring. Al principio me gustó el libro pero luego se volvió muy aburrido.

Initially he checked the microphone. Al principio él probó el micrófono.

First of all, I'll introduce myself. En primer lugar, me presentaré.

Adverbios de Grado Adverbs of Degree

Responden a preguntas tales como "to what degree?", e indican con qué intensidad se realiza una acción: very, completely, greatly, extremely.

so little - tan poco too little - demasiado poco

Ejemplos:

I miss you so much! ¡Le echo de menos tanto!

My son didn't like the soup much because it was cold. A mi hijo no le gustó mucho la sopa porque estaba fría.

We still know very little about insects. Todavía sabemos muy poco sobre insectos.

Tony knows so little about biology that he failed the test. Tony sabe tan poco sobre biología que él no aprobó el examen.

Adverbios de Certeza Adverbs of Certainty

Para saber con qué grado de certeza preguntamos "how sure?" y para responder utilizamos adverbios tales como: certainly, indeed, of course, perhaps.

certainly - ciertamente, desde luego of course - por supuesto definitely - sin duda indeed - efectivamente, de veras obviously - evidentemente really - realmente

Ejemplos:

I certainly appreciate your assistance. Ciertamente aprecio su ayuda.

Of course you can go out with your friends, Cindy. Por supuesto puedes salir con tus amigos, Cindy.

Without water, those plants will definitely die. Sin el agua, aquellas plantas sin duda morirán.

This is indeed a remarkable discovery. Este es en efecto un descubrimiento notable.

Obviously, we want to leave the beach before it rains. Obviamente, queremos irnos de la playa antes de que llueva.

Does she really love James? ¿Realmente ama ella a James?
