Trombone Warm Ups

compiled/arranged/adapted composed by Ken Piirtoniemi

* Note: These warm ups are not necessarily presented to be played in numerical order. Warm up Procedure Warm ups awaken and progressively exercise one's focus on breathing, critical listening of sound from attack to finish, and lip muscles for maximum flexibility. They help develop ear-training skills, endurance, competence and confidence in one's playing ability.

Objectives: Play 2 notes in one breath with a clean attack to the start of both pitches, constant 'laser beam' unwavering sound throughout to the start of beat 9. Use this to hear/identify intervals below & above a given pitch. This is written in a comfortable range, ascending/descending by semitones. Follow the tempo marking & extend it as you enjoy improved competence. Count between 4 to 8 beats of rest between each breath mark & evaluate your result.

Descending Lip Slurs Objectives: Inhale slowly and prepare carefully to tongue the first note of the slur with a clean attack. Play all notes of the slur in the same position. Slurs should sound smooth as if you were singing them. Think of fthe syllables, "tee-ooo-aw" when descending, to facilitate the fine lip adjustment that occurs inside the mouthpiece to play these notes.
