E C N IE R E P X E D N U O B D R A W T U = THE O
Are you sitting at your desk? Perhaps you would prefer to be outside sailing or rock climbing? Well it’s possible! Young people at Outward Bound schools don’t study, but they learn. They do exciting activities in wild places from the Amazon in Brazil to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA. On Outward Bound courses, people go on expeditions, camp in the wild, learn practical survival skills and do activities such as sea kayaking, surfing or hiking. These popular adventure courses help 11- to 24-year-olds learn through challenge. Outward Bound started in the UK in 1941, but it’s now international. 200,000 young people in 30 different countries do the courses every year. They make new friends, have fun and remember the experience all their lives. Take a look at what these students are doing today! Jo

Look at the photos and discuss the questions. ● Do you ever go skateboarding? ● Do people go skateboarding near your home? Where? ● What is the skateboarder in the photos wearing? ● What do you think about skateboarding?
2
Read the article quickly. What’s Hanna’s opinion about skateboarding? Find words and expressions that tell you. ‘I love it.’
Ur B A N MAG I C Hanna Wilsen 1
I’m a skateboarder. Skateboarding is an extreme sport – that means it’s all about excitement, risk and skill. In skateboarding, there are no teams and no rules. You’re on your own. And that’s why I love it!
2
We don’t need expensive stadiums or ice rinks to go skateboarding. We go to skate parks, of course, but we can skateboard anywhere. I use pavements, I jump down steps. The city, the town – that’s our stadium! And it’s open 24/7.
3
When I’m skateboarding, I need the right gear – T-shirts, hoodies, skater shoes and skateboarding jeans. I always wear protection too. Knee pads, elbow pads and my helmet, of course. Skateboarding isn’t really dangerous, but accidents sometimes happen. But I think I look cool!
4
A skateboarder needs balance, courage and discipline. Skateboarding is like any skill – playing the piano or speaking a foreign language – you need to practise. So while lots of kids are watching TV at home, I’m training at the skate park.
6
I don’t really like organised sport, but I love being active. And skateboarding is awesome! One minute you’re speeding along the ground, the next minute you’re flying through the air. You need a lot of skill. It’s an art.
7
Maybe I can do this as a career. There are professional skateboarders, you know! But first, I want to go to the Girls European Skate Camp. I want to meet other riders and learn from them! And I want to compete at the X Games one day.
8
What are you waiting for? Stop dreaming and start living!
5
I’m learning a lot of new tricks at the moment, such as Slides and Aerials. I like learning new stuff. It’s a challenge. And I want to make a video of my tricks.

YOUR TURN TO WRITE Sepak takraw is a fast, exciting sport. It’s a combination of volleyball, football and gymnastics. It’s popular in Southeast Asia, and it’s Malaysia’s national sport. The name comes from two languages. Sepak means ‘kick’ in Malay and takraw means ‘ball’ in Thai. People in Europe, Canada and the USA are starting to play it too. The rules of sepak takraw are simple. Each team has three people on the court. They can use any part of their body, except their hands, to hit the ball over the net. They win a point if the other team can’t hit it back to them. The sport’s most famous competition is the King’s Cup World Championship. It’s on every year in Thailand, in August or September. Sepak takraw is amazing to watch. In this photo, the player is flying through the air. He is trying to kick the ball over the net. There’s more information and videos about it online.
2 Read the description again and decide if the sentences are true or false. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Sepak takraw is similar to volleyball. true Sepak takraw is never played in Europe. Teams of three play on a court. It’s difficult to understand the rules of sepak takraw. Players can use their heads to hit the ball over the net. The King’s Cup is in a different country every year. Sepak takraw is often boring to watch. You can see people playing the sport on the internet.
