Why not Process Simulator?

Why not use a process simulator? Calculation Limitations – Simulator does not do sizing calculations. – Pressure drop methods do not include the acceleration term or check for choked flow which is important in high velocity Flare and Vent calculations. – Parameters specific to Flare Systems are usually missing Rated flow for tailpipes, actual flow for headers Inlet piping calculations Do not predict velocity and noise problems

– API guidelines not built into calculations.

Presentation Title

Why not use a process simulator? Workflow Limitations – Very difficult to handle looped systems Need simultaneous solver vs. a modular solver

– Multiple design scenarios are impractical because there is no data synchronization. Flowsheet Simulator – Each scenario is a case Flarenet – Each case contains all of the scenarios

22

22

Why not use a process simulator Simulator results are not acceptable – For a new design Lines sizes will be too small.

– For a rating Will under predict back pressure.

– Do not conform to API design guides. – Do not predict velocity or noise problems.

Can give an unsafe Flare System
