Concentric-To-Lap / Lap-To-Concentric Conversions

TECH NOTE No. 47

IC

T E A IA SSOC

CONCENTRIC-TO-LAP / LAP-TO-CONCENTRIC CONVERSIONS By Chuck Yung Senior Technical Support Specialist EASA

INTRODUCTION Concentric windings are used by most motor manufacturers to facilitate machine-insertion of windings and reduce production costs. Windings designed for 4 or more poles can usually be converted to an equivalent lap winding to improve performance, including efficiency. Two-pole motors, when lap wound, must be short-pitched for reasons of practicality. The narrower the coil pitch, the more actual turns are required to achieve the correct number of effective turns. In many cases a 2-pole concentric winding cannot be converted to an equivalent lap winding without reducing conductor area. Those windings should be duplicated to avoid degrading the efficiency of the motor. Some end-users also require their motors to be rewound “in like kind”–with no changes to the original design. When a winding must be rewound concentric, the layerinsertion method may be confusing to winders accustomed to the symmetry of the lap winding. This document is intended to help in those cases where a concentric winding must be used.

describes the slots occupied by the coil. If the sides of a coil lie in slots 1 and 11, the coil spans 10 teeth, but its pitch is 1-11. Using the wrong coil pitch will change the chord factor (one of the variables that determines the effectiveness of each turn in a coil). A larger chord factor reduces motor torque; a smaller chord factor increases magnetic flux densities. (More information about chord factor is provided later.)

CONCENTRIC WINDING BASICS EASA’s Tech Note 12 and the EASA Verification and Redesign program are useful when redesigning from concentric to lap windings. TN 12 can also be used (in reverse) to redesign from lap to a concentric winding. The breadth of concentric winding schemes is apparent from TN 12. Despite the large variety of pitches and turn ratios, certain basic rules apply to all (see Figure 2).

Tech Notes

Tech Notes cover a variety of technical subjects in great detail. Tech Notes make excellent handouts to supplement your in-house training program, as well as handy references for your foreman and other service center employees. (Note that Tech Notes are also available for FREE download from the “Members Only” section of www.easa.com.)

Coil pitch and span

Before going further, it is important to note that the terms coil pitch and coil span are often used interchangeably and incorrectly. Coil span describes the number of teeth enclosed, or spanned, by the coil (see Figure 1). Coil pitch

Using the manual can help improve your safety record and reduce the accident- and loss-related costs that can erode your company’s profits. For those who don’t have a safety/loss-control program, the manual contains everything needed to get started: an overall structure for the program; sample safety and loss-control forms; examples of effective safety policies, procedures and work rules; tips on how to conduct safety meetings; and a list of safety resources and hot lines. (Note that the Safety Resource Manual is available for FREE download from the “Members Only” section of www.easa.com.) Actual size: 8.5” x 11”

The Perfect Sales Call

Joe Ellers, Director of Palmetto Associates in Clemson, South Carolina, teamed up with the Association Education Alliance (AEA) and EASA to produce “The Perfect Sales Call.” The presentation is appropriate for inside and outside sales; the principles apply whether your focus is on products or services. The training consists of a DVD and CD-ROM. The CD contains a leader guide for sales managers and a participant guide for salespeople. You can print as many copies as you need from the CD. Your salespeople will get a checklist to use when they’re selling. Of all the sales training programs on the market, very few of them focus on the most critical element: the sales call itself. Too many programs today feature “blue sky” solutions that have never been applied in the service distribution industry. This program not only tells your people what to do — it shows them how to do it — so they can apply what they learn right away.

Quality Assurance And Environmental EASA-Q:2000 Quality Manual

The EASA-Q:2000 Quality Manual is a guideline for implementing the ISO 9000 series of quality system standards. Whether you are implementing a quality system for the first time or upgrading ISO 9000:1994 or EASA-Q:1994, EASA-Q: 2000 will be invaluable to you. The package consists of a printed manual and CD-ROM which can be used to customize your program. (Note that EASA-Q is based on ISO 9001-2000 and not ISO 9001-2008.)

Hazard Communication Manual

This indispensable manual was developed to help EASA service centers navigate the difficult terrain of the U.S. Federal OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. More specifically, it will help you collect and file Material Safety Data Sheets, train your employees, and document your training as required. Included are a summary of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, a compliance checklist, a suggested hazard communication program, hints on how to develop a written training program, and a primer on how to read Material Safety Data Sheets. The manual also contains a glossary and samples of various OSHA forms and letters. Note: This product is available in print or on a CD-ROM.

Waste Minimization Program

In many areas, government officials are trying to minimize the creation of waste rather than just trying to find ways of getting rid of it. With this in mind — and because eliminating waste makes good business sense — EASA developed the Waste Minimization Program. This booklet outlines the reasons to minimize waste and the steps you can take to implement a waste minimization program, including making a waste minimization assessment of your workplace. General Materials And Services CURRENTS

Your firm’s official representative already receives a copy of CURRENTS each month. Ordering extra subscriptions will ensure that all key people in your company will also be kept informed of EASA’s programs, seminars, technical articles and industry trends and events. You’ll also save the trouble of having to copy or clip articles to pass along to others in your company — especially when you need to keep certain articles for yourself. Order as many annual subscriptions as you like. Extra subscriptions will be sent to your company address, but be sure to list the names of the individuals to whom they should be sent. Actual size: 8.5” x 11”

Job Descriptions For EASA Service Centers

Written job descriptions can be tremendously helpful in making your operations run more smoothly, especially since employees are usually more productive when they know exactly what is expected of them. EASA’s publication, Job Descriptions For EASA Service Centers, provides a starting point for members who wish to write or revise job descriptions for their individual repair centers.
