The aims of this study are to investigate the fundamentals of material development for online English courses and produce a set of practical recommendations to the teachers, in particular to ELT teachers.

Online English Teachers Having the knowledge of material development for online courses

Role

Have basic computer skills

Need to know online material development principles

Cannot use text books or their digital version mostly due the copyright issues

Online English Materials

Characteristics

Text-based materials are the dominant part of any computer assisted language teaching course. Since materials are an integral part of online language instruction, the interaction between the students and content should be provided properly. Adding multimedia elements to online English teaching materials should be considered as an indispensable part of online material development process.

The materials should present the content appropriate for selfstudy, allowing students to understand the content independently.

Encourage learners to develop learning skills and strategies

Allow for a focus on form as well as function

Offer opportunities for integrated language use

Should be authentic

Stimulate interaction and be generative in terms of language

Should be contextualized

Link to each other to develop a progression of skills, understandings and language items.

English language materials

Should be attractive

Language input in materials should be contextualized.

Learners should be exposed sufficient samples of language in authentic use.

Materials should include activities that provide critical thinking and encourage learners to visualize.

Materials should include authentic language.

Materials should include interesting and engaging tasks.

Materials should provide learners to produce the desired outcomes.

Materials should contain enough spoken and written text. www.Google.com

What type of learning materials are we creating? What sections will our materials contain? What is the intended audience to use the materials? Who will benefit from them? What resources are available for us to design materials? • Who will comprise our pilot group? • How will we assess students while/ after they use the learning materials? • How will we evaluate the effectiveness of the materials we designed?

Material Design: Clarity, aesthetics and neatness are three features that help the material be appealing to the eye, legible and understandable.

✓ Combining images and text, but avoiding excessive use of texts and images onscreen. ✓ Presenting the information in a clear, standard and labeled way (by using bullet lists, charts, different fonts, etc.). ✓ Using clear and succinct language in the texts. ✓ Using appropriate colors to help learners identify main ideas and to discriminate different kinds of information. Having icons that help learners to visualize and recall recurrent information. ✓ Choosing clear images/graphics, multimedia for specific and well-defined purposes.

Using Accessible Language Using clear and accessible language is a key component of minimizing construct-irrelevant variance. However, do not simplify language that is part of the construct being assessed (e.g., the passages on a reading comprehension test or challenging vocabulary that is part of the construct of a subject area test). In other cases, though, the language of presentation should be as simple and clear as possible. Some general guidelines for using accessible language are: ➢ Use vocabulary that will be widely accessible to students. Avoid colloquial and idiomatic expressions. ➢ Keep sentence structures as simple as possible to express the intended meaning. ➢ Avoid use of negatives and constructions utilizing not in the questions’ stems and options as they can cause confusion, especially for ELLs. ➢ When a fictional context is necessary (e.g., for a mathematics word problem), use a simple context that will be familiar to as wide a range of students as possible.

Read ELT Teachers as Online Material Developers. The Online Journal of Distance Education and e-Learning Volume 1, Issue 2, and The Design and Development of Online Course Materials: Some Features and Recommendations. Taking into account the readings, design two interactive activities to teach: Writing A1, Speaking A2, Listening B1, Reading B2, Use of English C1. You have to choose first the topic with the level of your students, and the web 2.0 tool you are going to use to design your activity and post your selection into the forum to avoid repetition.

3

Post your activities designed (or their links) into the collaborative forum, and give some meaningful feedback to at least two of your partners’ activities.

• Watch and comment at least two of your partners’ activities. And in group design an online notebook using ONENOTE which you can create an account going to this link: https://www.onenote.com, or you can use any other tool you know to design an online notebook. Include the required specifications written in the guide • The final group’s product will be a document with the names of the students who participated in the planning and designing of the online notebook, and the link of your notebook. The group’s submitter has to submit this document to the monitoring and evaluation environment.

Review the course contents, overall Hakuta, K., & Jacks, L. (2009). Guidelines for the Assessment of English Language Learners, and, based on the interactive activities you designed for step 3, choose one of them to evaluate the topic designing an online test. Once you designed the test, design a web page (wix) to show all the materials and steps you develop for the course. This web must contain a Self-presentation, Introduction with a reflection, the PowToon you did for step1, the tutorial you did for step 2, the two interactive activities you designed for step , the tests you designed for the step, and a short conclusion with your self-assessment. (see the guide for detailed information)

The final document to be submitted individually to the monitoring and evaluation environment must be a word document with a cover page, and the link of your webpage.
