Conditionals You use conditionals to talk about situations (either real or imaginary) and the probable results or consequences of these situations. Conditionals are made up of two clauses: The conditional clause and the main clause. When the conditional clause begins the sentence, you must use a comma between the clauses. If I could, I’d retire tomorrow. I’d retire tomorrow if I could.
Zero conditional Form if+ present, + present/imperative Use You use the zero conditional: • to talk about something that is always or usually true (a fact, habit or routine), if means the same as when in this case. If (When) I can’t sleep, I drink a cup of hot milk. If (When) you mix oxygen and hydrogen, you make water.
• to give instructions or strong advice. Go to the doctor if you don’t feel better by tomorrow. If Sheila calls, tell her to phone hack later. First conditional Form if+ present, + will + infinitive Use You use the first conditional: • to talk about a likely situation and its probable result in the future. You’ll catch your flight if you hurry. 8 Este material educativo es para uso exclusivo de los alumnos del Programa de Educación a Distancia del Liceo Naval “Almirante Guise”
If it doesn’t rain, we’ll go out for a walk. • to give advice, threats and warnings and to make promises. I’ll hit you if you do that again. If you clean the car for me, I’ll give you fire pounds.
Second conditional Form if+ past, + would + infinitive Use You use the second conditional: • to talk about an unlikely or imaginary situation and its result. If I were taller, I’d be much more confident. If taxes went up, our firm would be in trouble.
• in the following expression: If I were you, I’d give her an advice. If were you, I’d study harder. Spoken English In speaking we can either use If I were ... or If I was ..., but in writing we always use If I were....
Third conditional Form if + past perfect. + would have + past participle Use You use the third conditional to speculate about possible situations in the past which didn’t happen. We would have caught the plane if we’d hurried. If you’d answered the first question, you would have got better marks.
9 Este material educativo es para uso exclusivo de los alumnos del Programa de Educación a Distancia del Liceo Naval “Almirante Guise”
Mixed conditional Form if+ past perfect, + would + infinitive Use You use this combination of a second and third conditional when yon want to connect a possible past event with the present or future.
If I’d married Mary, I would be happy now. Suzie would be coming to the wedding if she hadn’t just broken up with her boyfriend. Notes You can use other modal verbs in the main clause instead of will/would. If we’re going to invite John and Mary, we should invite Tom as well. If the traffic hadn’t been so bad, we could have arrived at the airport in time for our flight.
You can use other linking words instead of if. • unless (= if... not) Unless you finish your vegetables, you won’t get any dessert.
• as long as and provided (that). These both emphasize the condition that has to be met. Provided (that) is more formal. Provided that/As long as you work hard, you’ll succeed in life. If I had work harder, I wouldn’t have to work so much today!

A One afternoon, in a dark wood, little Red Riding Hood was on her way to her grandmother’s house, carrying a basket. Suddenly, a wolf appeared and asked her where she was going. Little Red Riding Hood told him and continued on her journey. The wolf disappeared into the forest. When the little girl opened the door of her grandmother’s house, she noticed immediately that the wolf had got dressed up as the old lady. But Red Riding Hood was a clever girl and was no taken in for a moment: the wolf had forgotten to put Grandmother’s glasses on. While the wolf was lying in bed waiting to eat Red Riding Hood she dashed out of the house, locked the door, and called the police on her mobile phone. After a few minutes, the police turned up and arrested the wolf. “If only I hadn’t forgotten to put on the glasses!” the wolf growled.
B Once a seal was lying on a rock, sunbathing. Suddenly, she thought to herself: “Life is so boring! All I do is lie around all day and swim. If only I could do something more interesting! If I joined a circus, life would be far more exciting.” And so she joined a circus. After a couple of years, the seal became a famous acrobat and was soon very rich. A few years later, dressed in her fine clothes and expensive shoes, the seal went back home to her rock to visit her old friends. She showed the other seals all the new tricks she had learnt in the circus and then asked them to show her something they could do. They dived into the water and swam beautifully. When the acrobatic seal tried to follow them, she realized she had forgotten how to swim, and her clothes were so heavy that she would have drowned, if the other seals hadn’t rushed to her rescue.

“You must be joking,” said the eagle, “if I didn’t have my wings, I wouldn’t be able to fly.” “Don’t worry about that,” replied the lion, “if it weren’t for my mane, I wouldn’t be the king of the jungle.” So after thinking for a while, the eagle agreed to make the exchange. When the eagle got home, wearing the lion’s mane, he thought he’d give his wife and children a surprise by sticking his head over the nest and shouting “Boo!” Unfortunately, his wife mistook him for the lion and took a gun out of the drawer and fired at the stranger. Fortunately, she missed.
D There was once a donkey who was tired of being a donkey. “I wish I were a lion or tiger,” he thought. So one day when he found a lion’s skin he put it on. Then he began trying to frighten whoever he happened to meet along the road. Everyone he met believed he was a lion, and ran as quickly as they could on seeing him approach. Delighted by the success of his trick, the donkey brayed loudly. The fox guessed who was hiding under the lion’s skin and, laughing, he said, “My dear friend, you can come out now. I’d have been afraid of you too, if I hadn’t heard your loud voice.”
