Hidden life? Is there undiscovered life hidden on our very own planet? It could be. For the past 15 years, scientists have been planning to explore a lake in Antarctica, called Lake Ellsworth. This doesn't sound very radical, but the lake lies deep under a cap of frozen ice and has never been reached by man. It is only recently that the technology has been developed to be able to explore this part of our world. British scientists will travel to Antarctica this month in the hope of finding life forms trapped beneath three kilometres of solid ice. They believe a lake such as Lake Ellsworth, which they think has been buried under ice for up to a million years, may contain unique microbes that could provide clues to how life evolved on earth. The team from the British Antarctic Survey will prepare a site in the hostile environment above Lake Ellsworth that they will return to next year, when they will begin drilling a hole through the ice. They will then take small quantities of water and sediment, which they hope will unlock the secrets of the lake. The scientists will live in tents, spending around three months working in temperatures of minus 25 degrees Celsius. They will use a special hotwater drill to reach the lake. A titanium probe, five metres long, will collect 24 separate quantities of water, taken from different points in the lake, and three metres of sediment. The titanium probe has been created with “clean technology” developed by the space industry, to avoid contamination of the lake during the investigations. Lake Ellsworth, which is on the West Antarctic ice sheet, will be the first of the continent's 387 known sub-glacial lakes to be investigated. What will be discovered in this place where the hand of man has never entered? 1.

Unit 4 | Writing Write a short review of a great place to stay. Choose either a hotel, a campsite or a city to write about. You can choose somewhere real or imaginary. Write 120-150 words.  We live this story in one of our trekkings in Andorra. We arrived at a shelter without saving where  there were more people. We chatted a little and went to sleep: two men and their dog downstairs  and us upstairs, on the beds. I left the bottle with water beside me. Total darkness, doors not closed  in case someone else came - roars of the dog, cold ...  I fell asleep, but my mind did not: I was still inventing fantastic stories. I was running chased by a 3

villain about to reach me, I took my foot ... I kicked him, and I woke up ... one of the men in the bed  below dazzled me with the flashlight, scared, protecting his face ...  Apparently I did not close the bottle well and in the middle of the night water fell, and he got up and  touched my leg to wake me up. The next night we returned to coincide with them. We dined  together, and as there was more confidence, they told us their version of what happened  I was sleeping, when I thought I noticed a drop on my forehead. The frequency of the drip increased, and at some point I got a jet. These H ... of P ... they are pissing! Of course, since it's cold outside, they will not want to leave. But I realized that the water was cold, so it could not be pee. I got up to look for what was leaking, I woke you up and you almost killed me ...
