WHO WAS THE RULER OF ENGLAND DURING SHAKESPEARE'S TIME? 

The two monarchs who ruled England during the time of William Shakespeare were Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.



King James ascended to the throne in 1603, 13 years before Shakespeare's death.



Queen Elizabeth allowed the construction of England's first professional theaters during her reign.



Shakespeare's theater company, once known as Lord Chamberlain's Men, acquired the patronage of King James when he became the reigning monarch and changed its name to the King's Men. ELIZABETH AND JAMES I

 Shakespeare lived during a remarkable period of English history.  During her 45-year reign, London became a cultural and commercial center where learning and literature thrived.

 Queen Elizabeth was fond of the theater, and many of England's greatest playwrights were active during her reign, including Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, and William Shakespeare.  The Shakespearean sonnet, Spenserian stanza, and dramatic blank verse also came into practice during the period.

 With the permission of Queen Elizabeth, professional theaters were built in England for the first time, attracting 15,000 theatergoers per week in London.

She was a tremendous fan of theater and the literary arts; she was even an accomplished poet.  In turn, Shakespeare faithfully supported the queen and referred to her in several of his works, including "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

 William Shakespeare wrote "Macbeth" as a way to express his patronage of King James I.



"Macbeth" relates the story of someone who overthrows the King of Scotland by killing him.

 The witches in Shakespeare’s tragedy coincide with James' enthusiasm with the subject of witches.  "Macbeth" is the only Shakespearean play

that is set in Scotland.

WAS SHAKESPEARE ONE OF THE TRANSLATORS OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE? William Shakespeare lived from 1564-1616. The creation of the King James Bible began in the year 1610, the year in which Shakespeare would have been 46 years old.

WHY DID SHAKESPEARE WRITE "MACBETH"? The basis of the play comes from Scottish history; the real Macbeth, one of James' ancestors, ruled from 1040 to 1057. It explores similar themes to James' writings about the ideal king as one who does his duty to God and country with spotless integrity. The witches relate to James' interest in the supernatural and involvement in witch trials while ruling in Scotland.
