In Defence of the Crown “Two rogue legionaries; doesn’t say which legion. Around six hostages: mostly members of the same family, taken from housing within the dome. No demands. It doesn’t mention motives.” Cromwell sets the data-slate down on the seat beside him, pulls a handkerchief from his jacket pocket, and cleans half-moon spectacles, while the flier lurches around London’s spires. It’s a troop carrier: rows of seats and straps, all battleship grey, made darker by sparse lighting. Cromwell is incongruous: a man of advancing years, dressed in tweed, strapped in a military flier. What silver hair remains is cropped short, and his waistcoat has the thickness of armour. Nzambi rests, eyes closed, in the next seat. She has the look of a greyhound: sleek in a hungry sort of way, all bone and sinew. Her skin is the colour of milk chocolate, her hair braided tight against her scalp. She fits the flier: armoured fatigues match the grey of the bulkhead. Cromwell replaces his glasses, folds the kerchief and returns it to his jacket, then checks the data-slate for updates. “They’re talking about us,” Nzambi doesn’t open her eyes. “Anything interesting?” “The usual,” her voice takes on an East London accent, “ ‘ow can you trust someone who’s had their brain messed with by foreigners? Ain’t right.’ ” Cromwell’s brows furrow, “I wonder how they knew IIS was sending psions.” A red light flashes over the tail ramp. The flier stabilises. A clunk, and a whirr, and the tail-ramp opens, lowering. Light floods the flier from a bright autumn sky, the rush of wind past the door brings an early chill. Nzambi opens her eyes. “Would you mind?” Cromwell gestures to a long bag on the floor, as they unstrap themselves. Nzambi slings it over her shoulder; something hard and heavy is inside. She hops off the ramp before it has finished opening. Cromwell takes up his walking-cane and stands, waiting in the ramp-way until the ramp has completed its motion, then disembarks with somewhat more decorum. Behind them, the flier roars, and arcs away, leaving Cromwell and Nzambi standing, near the apex, on one of London’s southern domes. Strictly, it isn’t a dome: it’s a polyhedron with many facets and at this height, the slope of the facets is slight enough that they can be traversed by foot fairly safely. Cromwell turns back the way they had come: the slope of the dome drops away, into patchy cloud that clings to its sides. High-altitude winds whine over the polyhedron’s edges. Overhead, the sky is crisp, scrubbed blue. The facet at their feet is grimily clear, offering a vertiginous view down through gantries and high plazas, micro-parks and stolid blocks of housing. Cromwell, unperturbed, limps after Nzambi. “Haven’t you healed that yet?” Nzambi doesn’t turn. “Permanent injuries are still somewhat above my mastery,” Cromwell calls over the wind. Around the dome, on a pale grey, weathered facet, a Home Guard squad hunker down: broad shapes in hard-shell combat armour. One is injured, the armour on his arm still smoking. Another is lying down, dusted with frost. Seeing Cromwell

and Nzambi, the squad sergeant stands, carbine held casually. The cloud clings closer here, creeping up toward the soldiers. Nzambi does not acknowledge the Guard, or make any indication that she’s even seen them. She stalks to a spot near where they’re crouched, sets down the bag with a heavy metal clunk, and stands, gazing into space, turning her head as though listening for something. The soldiers stare at her warily, helmets and goggles turning their faces beetle-blank, muttering to each other over the radio. “We are sharing your frequencies,” Cromwell smiles, tapping a comm-bead in his ear. He stops before the sergeant, both hands resting on his walking-cane. Despite the limp, he has a straight-backed military bearing. “IIS special operatives Cromwell and Nzambi. I understand you requested assistance.” “We requested snipers and air support, not a weird-ass vat mutant,” the sergeant does not uncover his face. His finger rests near the trigger of his carbine. “Sorry to disappoint you, sergeant. The IIS considered us to be more suited to the task.” “Who are you, anyway? Her handler?” he jerks his head toward Nzambi, the helmet hiding his expression. A hard, barking laugh makes some of the Guard start. Cromwell pulls an ID card from his waistcoat pocket and presents it to the sergeant, “Similar mutant, different vat. Agent Nzambi is clairsentient; I am vitakinetic.” The sergeant shifts uncomfortably, blank goggles staring at the card. “Great”, he grunts, “We’ve got a siege to break, and they send us a witch-doctor.” “I was considered to be the most suitable method of providing medical support to your squad.” “We’ll take our chances with the paramedics,” the sergeant steps to block Cromwell’s view of the prone soldier. “I have seen his aura, sergeant. He was a healthy lad: the broken left shin has healed well, as has the, ah, rash. But the frost-burn is severe, and will kill him in probably less than twenty minutes. With the legionaries complicating direct extraction from this spot-” “You keep your mutant hands off my boys. And your weird vision, too.” “Sergeant, I do not expect you to trust me,” Cromwell bites off staccato words, “but do not actively hinder me in the assistance of my countrymen! If you prevent me from healing him, you are killing one of your own men.” He takes a deep breath. His voice lowers, softens, “It is not pleasant making the call to a soldier’s widow. Believe me.” There is a moment while the sergeant stands, rigid, glaring. Then, with an insubordinate sigh that can be heard through his helmet, he steps aside, “I’m watching you.” “And IIS is watching us all,” Cromwell murmurs. Cromwell kneels awkwardly beside the lying, frosted guardsman. His goggles and faceplate have been removed; his lips and the tip of his nose are purple-black. Cromwell lays a callused hand against his face, another on his stomach, and stares down at the lad’s closed eyes. Cromwell takes a deep breath, and lets it out, slowly, laboriously. His breath clouds, thick and cold, and is dragged away by the wind. The soldier groans. His eyelids flicker. Cromwell, a little paler, looks up at the sergeant, “He is still very badly hurt, but is stable. He can be safely moved. Get him to somewhere warm.” After that display, the soldier with the injured arm allows Cromwell to mitigate his burns, then he, and another soldier, carry the frost-burned lad to a facet far enough away for air evacuation.

Cromwell stands a moment, leaning on his cane, breathing deeply. Through all this, Nzambi has stood, poised, head slowly turning, eyes gazing, unfocussed, past the sky. As colour returns to Cromwell’s face, he turns back to the sergeant. “Tell me about these rogue legionaries.” “They’re at the top of an access building, where it pokes up through the dome. It’s anti-clockwise from this point. This ridge here,” he points, “is giving us cover. The whole face is covered in cloud, has been since they got there. Means visibility’s shot, and we’ve got to rely on IR for anything past about ten metres. Problem is, them legionaries are near invisible on IR, an’ when they throw out fire, you can’t see a damn thing for awhile. It’s like them aberrants: their freak powers mess you up.” “They’re chilling the air to condense cloud. Ingenious,” Cromwell raises his eyebrows. Cromwell limps over to the bag that Nzambi carried for him, kneels, sets down his cane, and unzips the bag. He extracts several large, matt-grey components, and over the course of a few minutes, assembles what looks like a very long rifle, though the barrel is bulked out by some surrounding mechanism for its entire length. The final rifle is about a metre and a half long, and though the barrel’s bore is small, its surrounding mechanism gives the barrel the diameter of a grapefruit. Several blocky units attach to one side, and a bipod is folded against the underside. Cromwell takes off his half-moon spectacles, “Metal-framed,” he explains to the sergeant, then takes a set of keys from a pocket, and stows both in the bag. Finally, he pulls out a set of vision-enhancing goggles, and dons them. “Where are they?” Cromwell looks up at Nzambi with insect-like lenses. “Both are inside, at the wall nearest us,” Nzambi picks up the gun without looking, “One is watching out of the far-right window.” “Ah-” “Your right.” “Thank you,” Cromwell smiles. “The other is sitting below the middle window, about seventy centimetres to the left of its centre. Your left. He is injured, but not badly. Both have auto pistols.” Nzambi’s voice seems to come from far away. She stands perfectly still, gazing into space, “The hostages are toward the rear of the room, staying low, and mostly in the stair-well, the lower door of which has been welded shut and barricaded. Some have minor cuts, likely from debris.” “Can you tell their legion?” “Facial tatoos suggest the seventh.” “Not the sixth? Seventh is deep-space,” Cromwell frowns. “No, they’re seventh legion, though their accents are local.” “What are they saying?” Cromwell’s knuckles tighten on his cane. “I think the hostages… they’re not hostages. They’re family. The legionaries came back to them, hoping their family might help hide them. They’re talking about something they saw. Something about a space-ship… it’s called the HMSS Victorious.” “Sergeant”, Cromwell turns, lifts his goggles for a moment to look at the sergeant with his own eyes, “We are about to make our assault. Are your men ready?” “With the snipers and gunships I asked for, we’d be ready,” the sergeant growls, “I ain’t trusting my men’s safety to foreign spook powers.” He turns smartly, and leads his men some distance back. Cromwell watches him go, the muscles in his jaw twitching. He snaps down his goggles, and limp-marches toward the edge, beyond which the legionaries wait. Nzambi gives no indication that she even heard the exchange. She simply

follows, carrying the enormous gun. Poking out of the dome’s vertexes, aerials sing. They head down-slope, so that, as they approach the edge, they are shrouded in cloud. While wind whips past, the cloud’s position stays fairly constant. They approach the edge at a crouch, then a crawl, using the ridge as cover. The air is cooler here. In the cloud, moisture beads on tweed and armour, and combines with grime to make the roof slippery. Near the edge, Nzambi passes the gun to Cromwell. He braces it against his shoulder, snaps a shield out of the gun’s side: IR reflective armour with a narrow viewing slit. Nzambi pulls up her armour’s hood, snaps rigid plates together until only her eyes are visible, and then draws a sonic pistol. “Ready?” Nzambi faces Cromwell for the first time, fixes him with wide, dark, almond-shaped eyes. “Have they moved?” Cromwell hisses. “They’re still in place.” “One seventy centimetres to my left of the centre of the middle window, sitting against the wall, one in the right-hand window.” “Yes.” Cromwell takes a deep breath, then shoulders the gun forward, cresting the edge. He sees the access building through the slit in the gun’s shield: a dome, a real one, three windows facing this way, no obvious IR trace in any of them. He braces the weapon, carefully aims it at a point in the wall. A heat flash in the far-right window accompanies the retort of gunfire. A bullet ricochets off the edge nearby. “They’re still in place,” Nzambi is laying on her back, gazing past the sky. “Go.” Two events happen simultaneously. Nzambi flips to her feet, over the ridge. There is a crack of torn air, filling the space between Cromwell’s gun and the building, accompanied by a metallic bang, as a small cratered hole appears in the building’s wall, below the middle window and seventy centimetres to the left. Nzambi presents an erratic target, rolling toward the building, sonic pistol screaming. Heat-flares in the window coincide with gunshots. One wings Nzambi, but she rolls with it, olaminium-laced armour reducing the impact to bruising. She drops below a gout of flame. A second crack of torn air: a sonic boom from the coil-gun’s tiny projectile. A splattering sound, like a balloon filled with porridge exploding. A metallic bang as a cratered hole appears in the back wall of the building. After the gout of flame, it’s hard to make out the IR trace that materialises in the right-hand window, hurled back, in pieces. Nzambi stops, turns, walks back to Cromwell, “Both dead. We’re done here.” Cromwell sighs, levers himself up into a sitting position. “Not quite. The Home Guard still have work to do. After what they’ve heard, we’ll need to bring the family in for processing.” Over the wind, from the building, comes muted crying. Nzambi picks up the coil-gun, and helps Cromwell to his feet, as the cloud starts to blow away.

Trinity: IIS – An Introduction The UK of the 2120s is a dark & prejudiced place. The strange and peculiar are viewed with suspicion and fear. A culture of reporting on friends and family is fostered and encouraged. The brains of the Integrated Intelligence Service (I.I.S) with the brawn of the Home Guard act to root out and destroy any and all "threats to the Crown". In this environment of paranoia the government must be able to rely on its special operations units, one of which is Team 4, Codename: Lionheart. Players take the role of Psions, psychic individuals whose powers have been triggered by one of seven PSI Orders but who now work for the British Government. The UK distrusts psions at best and despises them at worst so the team will have their work cut out for them, both in doing their jobs against a backdrop of oppression and fear and convincing their senior officers that they can be trusted and are on the same side. “Let’s start from the beginning shall we Mr. Drummond?” Albert Myers pushed a large metallic grey box across the desktop and pressed down on two thick and rather stiff black buttons. Drummond turned his head around from the window and eyed the device suspiciously. “What the hell is that thing supposed to be?” he asked, a failing tone of defiance in his voice. Drummond was sweating terribly, his eyes looked red and perilous. With his tense shoulders and shaking hands he had all the classic markings of a hunted animal. Myers smiled broadly and pushed back his trim glasses with a forefinger, “It’s an antique analogue recording device called a tape recorder. I find it particularly useful in my line of work. Much harder for people to monitor.” Drummond swallowed hard. This was it then. The moment he would begin to measure his life in minutes rather than days. He was now an informant.

The United Kingdom of the 22nd century Isolationist to the point of xenophobia the United Kingdom’s relationship with other countries nd is due in the most part to the fact that it is the single most prosperous nation in 22 century Europe. It’s recovery after the Aberrant war was fuelled by an aggressive program of ecological restoration giving rise to both a very clear split between the rural and (London) arcology cultures and huge fears within Government and the mass media over the hordes of European refugees seeking a new and better life on British shores. The British fear of “outsiders” goes beyond their European neighbours. There is also suspicion that any visitors from more prosperous nations may be seeking to exploit the UK or are sneering down their noses at the nation’s efforts to achieve a place on the inter stellar stage. It should be noted that the British xenophobia and conservatism is not based in racism as such. Most people living in the United Kingdom wouldn’t care what colour your skin was as long as you were born in the UK. Similarly a child of British parents born and brought up in Paris will be considered a “stinking Frenchie”.

The French Flu A strange phenomenon appears to have accompanied the devastation in France caused by the crash of the space station Esperanza. Legal visitors to Britain (along with all permanent residents and nationals) are given an immunisation against a vicious and incapacitating disease referred to as “French Flu”. Injections for visitors last for two months with a booster given when they renew their travel papers. Vaccinations for permanent residents give life long protection from the disease. Scientists and doctors are mystified as to why the disease only occurs on British soil and many Æsculapians have come to the country to research the

In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 9 of 60

infection to try to determine it’s cause (for full details of the Flu see Shattered Europe page 93).

The city of the future vs. this green and pleasant land One fifth of the population (8.5 million people) lives in the only British Arcology, the giant city complex of London, the location of Britain’s only spaceport and proposed location of a “beanstalk”; a giant elevator linking London to low Earth orbit . The culture here is much like any urban area in the rest of the solar system. It is cosmopolitan, diverse and changes rapidly. However many visitors find it somewhat staid and stagnant as all media of note is imported talent and there have been no domestic media talents of any real merit profiled or headlining in the city for many years. It seems that in a back lash against the provincialism of the British rural culture anything native to the nation is seen by residents of the arcology as stale. On the flip side to this the culture outside London is vibrant and active. Folk music is on the up with predominant themes of lasting simple pleasures verses momentary diversions, a rejection of technology for technology’s sake, and ridicule of hollow spontaneity. Those Brits who live outside the archology still watch and enjoy the mass media broadcasts from the huge multinational entertainment corporations but they would generally agree that they prefer the local material and artists who relate to them, their issues and where they are. In contrast the local entertainment movements in the UK have started to come to the attention of some of the large Australian media moguls who are now scouring the festivals, gigs and pubs for the “next big thing” to launch onto the stellar market. Ever since the Aberrant war religion has remained a large facet of British society. Most English people, particularly in rural areas, are at least nominal adherents to the Anglican Church, while the Roman Catholic Church enjoys great support in Wales and Ireland. That said there are an increasing number of individuals who have left the Catholic Church for the splinter group calling itself Orthodox Catholicism (formed in response to the 2084 Vatican reforms).

The Monarchy King George VII reigns figuratively over the United Kingdom at the tender age of 17, having risen to the throne after the passing of his father, King Charles IV, in June 2120. It was known for quite some time that the relatively young King Charles’ health was failing and so George was pushed hard in his training - so hard that he’s developed something of a rebellious will. George hasn’t acted on his feelings yet - he is still following Prime Minister Gatwick’s requests in the letter, but his temper is growing shorter. Worse, the young king has something of a fascination with all things psionic as well as Muzzein-Bang - an entertainment form available to him only through foreign media. George’s uncle Prince Harry, Duke of York, and his aunt Eleanor, the Princess Royal, recognize the hellion streak in George and are trying to hold him back until such time as they feel he is mature enough to turn the people from the path Gatwick has set. Harry, known as something of a joker, is next in line to the throne and can think of nothing worse than being king - especially a king under the thumb of a troll like Gatwick. After the changes made in 2009 to the rites of succession which from that point allowed members of the Roman Catholic Church to once again legally take the throne Prince William, who would eventually be crowned King William V, converted to Catholism. His children were brought up as catholics and the present King is now the third consecutive catholic monarch of the British Isles. While King George is somewhat lapse in practising his faith the Orthodox Catholic movement see him as a prime ally and believe that he can be swayed to assist them in promoting their agenda and the independence of the Isle of Man. Many skeletons lay in the Royal family’s closet but possibly the most recently laid to rest is that King Charles XI suffered and died from Gruber’s Rot, a little known wasting disease caused by Taint. Basil Gatwick ensured that this was covered up as it just wouldn’t do to have the public know that their Monarch was ‘Tainted’. The course of the disease was slow and In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 10 of 60

painful forcing the King Charles to withdraw more and more from public life each year. The Royal Doctor, Albert Solanski’s, efforts to recruit an Æsculapian were frustrated by Gatwick’s agents for so long that when Solanski finally went all out and bribed a palace servant to pass a note to a visiting Rex, It was already far too late. Solanski is currently imprisoned for this action in a facility in the Cotswalds - a fact that Prince Harry has learnt, but is holding back from the king. Should George ever find out about this it’s likely that he will lose all patience with Gatwick and his government’s Isolationist policies.

The Maglev network The British have had a long love/hate relationship with trains, from the romantic ideal of steam locomotives to the crush of over burdened commuter trains. This trend has continued into the 2100’s with the development of the National Maglev Network (NMN). Developed to allow swift, reliable, delivery of goods and people into the capital the government sponsored network emanates like a spider’s web from the London arcology, touching all points of Great Britain. On paper the network appears all encompassing, connecting all parts of the nation with swift, reliable and cost effective transport. The reality is much different. The government’s plan was to ensure that London got what it needed; goods for consumption in the capital or for export via the London spaceport, and those few workers who still commuted into the mammoth city. Beyond that in the minds of the Government the network serves no other purpose. Trains are rerouted or cancelled to ensure that services to London are maintained. Therefore while a prospective passenger can always find regular and speedy trains in and out of the capital, travelling to other destinations is fraught with delays, cancellations and stoppages. Tickets are often unavailable, having been booked weeks in advance, and the carriages used are frequently decrepit old rolling stock that should have been retired years ago and yet is packed to the doors with passengers. It should also be noted that ticket prices for travel to other destinations are loaded to compensate for the reductions applied to London prices.

British Industry To many peoples surprise British businesses have seen a steady increase in profits since the Esperanza disaster. Aided by the strong foundation supplied by developments in the agriculture sector Great Britain is home to a number of successful companies. There is somewhat of a regional bias in terms of industry in the UK with manufacturing predominating in the North while farming (found throughout the country) is focused in the south and west. Due to the ecological restoration program and the agreement with Nippon to supply the nation with much needed biomass the agriculture industry in the UK is experiencing a period of prosperity. All aspects of farming is represented across the country, from livestock farming (in particular, but not limited to, cows, pigs and sheep) to grain and cereals, vegetables and fruit and in some areas of the south the climate and soil is even suitable for vineyards and wine production. In contrast London Archology is a thriving centre for the service industries, retail sectors and financial companies and now boasts most European head offices of major meta-nationals. This coupled with the London Spaceport and maglev hub serves to keep visitors flooding into the archology, regardless of the border restrictions and general treatment of foreigners.

Companies of note: Reed Rosen – Makers of high end, high performance Skimmers. Reed Rosen cater for discerning and selective clientele throughout human space. Most manufacturing for export is done off planet in orbital factories however, after entering into a contract with the British Home Guard to supply a range of combat capable skimmers, the company has recently reopened a large manufacturing complex in the north east of England. Independent analysts have yet to be convinced of the suitability of this decision and the quality of the final product. Wembley & Hardcastle – A British based company with the exclusive contract to provide man portable ranged weapons (i.e. pistols, carbines and support weapons) to the BHG, Wembley & Hardcastle’s bid was sold on the basis that they have the licence to produce L-K weapons. The W&H versions of the guns vary little from the L-K originals except for the uniform matt black finish and W&H name. That said innovation has been a British forte since In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 11 of 60

the time of Isenbard Kingdom Brunel and so W&H produce a variety of non-L-K models which consist of a set of standardised modifications to basic L-K weapons. British Power – Supplying energy to the majority of the nation British Power has had a chequered and dark history. An early proponent of alternative energy sources Britain would not be in the relatively strong and stable state it is in now without the wind turbines, solar generators and other sources of energy created and maintained by BP. However many believe that these advances were due directly or in part by the work of Aberrants during the war and that stigma and shadow has haunted the company ever since. Mayhews – The Agriculture magnate, founded, owned and run for over a hundred years by the Mayhew family. Mayhews owns farms, it manages farms, it trains farm staff, it manufactures and supplies farm equipment, it supplies temporary farm staff during seasonal periods, to many people it is synonymous with farming in the UK. About 30% of farms in the UK are owned or run by the company with another 37% relying on Mayhews equipment. As such the company is a strong lobbying force for the industry as a whole, but is still not the only player in the market. Plus some in the I.I.S. believe that a good proportion of the “seasonal staff” used by Mayhews are illegal immigrants. A full investigation may be forthcoming but will have to be handled extremely delicately.

British Technology nd

In the 22 century technology surrounds all of humanity and Britain has been swift to embrace whatever cutting edge tech it can acquire. This has lead to the current polite but reserved alliance with Nippon; Britain supplies the Nipponese with much needed biomass while Nippon provides training, machinery, advanced technical specifications, and the licences to produce such items. Both nations have benefited from this arrangement but the British are well aware that the technology they receive is by no means the cutting edge of Nipponese development. However they are nothing if not resourceful. As mentioned above there is a long history of invention and innovation in British engineering and in these austere times this has never been truer. This impacts in two specific ways; firstly very little is wasted in every manufacturing process or business. Companies and individuals are far more likely to repair rather than replace broken items and there is a general consensus that even if something isn’t the best item available if it’s cheaper to maintain than to purchase a new replacement you just make do. Technology dating back to the Aberrant era can occasionally be seen, particularly in rural areas, cobbled together and lovingly maintained by those who have inherited it over time. Such items are rarely of direct Aberrant manufacture or the advanced levels of technology it is rumoured that they were capable of building however the Æon Trinity are often on the lookout for such lost “gems” and will go to great efforts to purchase or obtain such items for analysis, much to the British Governments chagrin. Secondly every Nipponese design that British companies receive they analyse and reverse engineer, then rebuild and redesign to their own requirements, the final commercially produced design often baring only a similarity to the original. Similarly technology purchased by the British Government will almost always be sourced from the UK where possible however if it must be purchased from foreign companies it will be dismantled, investigated, rebuilt and refitted as necessary. By changing and modifying such technology the Government feels they are better protected from enemy powers (for example the layout and capabilities of British run OE Ltd Pathfinder Patrol ships will be completely identical to each other but completely different to a commercially available vessel of the same class and model) and the technical knowledge of the government engineering and scientific staff increases. In this way British companies and the Government are increasing the complexity of their own designs and technology level at a rapid rate, a fact that has not escaped their Nipponese partners. It should be noted that all this refers to hard tech, not bioapps. The British authorities generally disdain bioapps across the board as they consider them inseparably linked to Psions. As all the Psion orders are based in countries other than Britain all biological technology is considered, by association, to be of foreign, and possibly even alien, origin. Bioapps of any nature don’t go down well in the UK. Individuals openly carrying or wearing biological technology will be given dirty stares and in all likelihood the Home Guard will be In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 12 of 60

called by a concerned citizen. Likewise while there may be some rare exceptions the Government tends to have a “no-tolerance” policy of bioapp use by its staff, it is a policy that the few Government Psions are constantly petitioning against.

British Fashion and style Although the British Government does not restrict access to international media few people in Britain outside of London pay little attention to it, seeing it as irrelevant to their interests. In the light of such insular thinking it is unsurprising that elements of British culture can appear somewhat strange or unconventional to the rest of Human society. Possibly the most obvious quirk is the fashions of the Neu Elizabethan movement. In a time when most people living in Britain are fiercely proud of their nation and, with the prospect of the London Bridge, looking forward to the future of the nation in space and amongst the stars it may be unsurprising that the latest fashions of the day are harkening back to the time of Queen Elizabeth the first, a period of exploration, conquest and expansion for Great Britain. For women with an eye for cutting edge fashions this means many layered gowns, high and wide shoulders, bodices and ruffs. Fashionable men are wearing linen shirts, doublets, hose and jerkins. But in this technology driven age the clothing might bear a physical resemblance to that of the 1500s but below the surface it is often very different. The Elizabethan fashions copied by the movement were regularly decorated in ornate beading and embroidery and modern designers, such as the oft lauded Roberta Fine, are using such features to hide all kinds of personal electronics, such as minicomps, biomonitors, and communication devices. The movement has also seen a return to wearing “favours”; badges, ribbons or gifts showing allegiance to a company or cause or the affections of a loved one. Socially these give a clear indication of a wearer’s taste and opinions but when two individuals arrive at a party wearing the same lover’s token the results can become somewhat embarrassing and on some occasions turn violent.

While a British gent may get a strange look on Olympus as he strolls past in his tights, soft shoes, jerkin and ruff such ostentatious attire may seem at odds with the reality of the austere and reserved United Kingdom. However it has been a historic trend in Britain, particularly in such lean times, for individuals to wear their wealth openly. From Celtic times to the Victoria era onwards people were often judged socially solely on appearance. If an individual appears wealthy and can afford to go out bedecked with jewels and fancies the impression given is that they must be a person of actual importance and riches. Thus while things may be hard for the average British citizen they will still dress up in their flambouyant best at every given opportunity. It also means that if an individual has smart clothes and the confidence to carry them off they can pretty much gain acceptance wherever they go. Crime and disorder nd

No matter what statistics the Government laud and publicise crime is rampant in 22 century Great Britain. Violent crime is rare, due in the main to the very constant and visible presence of the Home Guard, but in a society where the majority have very little theft, fraud, smuggling and forgery are wide spread. For the majority of British residents “victimless” crime (media piracy, petty shoplifting and the like) are seen as something “everyone does to get by”. A means to acquire a few luxuries to alleviate the day to day drudgery. Larger scale crime can often be attributed to organised gangs, some originating from continental Europe and the near east that have well developed networks for the movement of goods, and in many cases people. Smuggling immigrants (and to a lesser extent bioapps and foreign tech) into the UK is very big business and requires a high level of organisation and inside contacts. Likewise a vast amount of Home Guard resources are dedicated to clamping down on such trade. Drugs are a significant problem in the UK, especially within the London Arcology. People see them as a means of escape or as a cosmopolitan affectation, with the added “glamour” factor that most of the drugs produced legally in Sudamerica are still considered illegal in Britain.

The British Home Guard The heavy handed enforcement of British law and the responsibility for constant vigilance against invasion of the nation’s borders falls to the British Home Guard (BHG), the combined armed forces of the United Kingdom. The BHG has jurisdiction throughout the UK, they have universal rights of detainment and interrogation and may hold an individual for up to 48 hours without charge. Only British citizens have a right to trial and even legitimate visitors can have their travel papers truncated without criminal cause. All psion visitors to Britain have to carry tracking devices with a 60 day time limit. Not only do the BHG track where they are at all times but if a psion over stays their welcome they will be located and taken in for questioning.

The Integrated Intelligence Service nd

The Integrated Intelligence Service is the 22 Century’s answer to the legendary MI-6 and its sister agencies. The I.I.S. performs the same roles as most other national intelligence agencies: gathering data on other countries that those nations like to keep secret. The Service is split into two divisions: Analysis sifts through collected data performing tactical analysis, looking for trends and clues and works to provide forward strategic planning while the Field division is responsible for the classic “spy” operations: deep cover operations to dig up information. The I.I.S. is headed up by the enigma known only as “C”, or “Control”. “C” was the initial of the very first MI6 commander, and it’s been his title ever since. It’s not like Great Britain to waste a perfectly good tradition so the practice was retained in the I.I.S. Since the amalgamation of the intelligence services “C” has been a complete cipher, interacting with others solely via computer agent, his or her true identity perhaps only known by the Field Director and Analysis Section Heads. Much speculation exists as to who, or what, “C” may be. Some even theorise that “C” may not be a person at all but rather a complex SI program left over from the Directive. The Analysis Division of I.I.S. is split into twelve Sections, each charged with monitoring and analysing data for a particular geographical area. Each Section identified by a letter of the alphabet and historically the earlier in the alphabet the letter the higher profile and more important the Section allowing it a greater level of funding, larger staff and better access to non-I.I.S. resources. Every Section is run by a Section Head who answers directly to “C”.

In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 15 of 60

The current Analysis Sections are: A – British Isles and its territories (inc. Camelot) B – Western Europe C – Central and Eastern Europe D – North America and Canada E – Asia F – Central and Sudamerica G – Africa H – Luna I – Solar System J – Australasia K – Oceania and the Poles L – Extra Solar In contrast to the Analysis Division the Field Division is organised into Teams, each with a specific focus or area of operations. All Teams answer to the single Field Director, a post currently held by Sir Milliard “Mills” Coleman. The number of teams varies according to the current requirements of the I.I.S. and new teams can be raised or dissolved as required. Thus Teams vary greatly in size dependant on purpose and current political climate, from the elite Excalibur unit with its minimalist support and field personnel to Wellington’s multiple Platoons of troops and logistics staff. Outside observers often think that the term “team” refers to a single operation squad but this is an intentional misnomer. Teams can consist of hundreds of individuals, organised in designated “Units” (the I.I.S. term for a squad or mission team). As of 2120 the known teams in operation are: Team 1, Codename: Excalibur – Wetwork/black ops specialists Team 2, Codename: Pendragon – Anti-sedition unit Team 3, Codename: Windsor - Security specialists Team 4, Codename: Lionheart – Psions and Noetic phenomena Team 5, Codename: Nelson - Space specialists based on Luna Team 6, Codename: Churchill – Political espionage experts Team 7, Codename: Wellington – Tactical support In practice a single Team may be involved in operations spanning a number of Analysis Sections and this can sometimes lead to infighting over resources. However the fact that Field Division Agents get regular exposure to a wide variety of environments and situations but are supported up by analysis from regional specialists any minor squabbling between Sections is seen as an acceptable price to pay.

Recruitment Generally speaking the I.I.S. recruits new agents and analysts from four separate routes. The Alumni Historically the British Secret Service has had a tradition of recruiting the brightest and best nd and this holds true in the 22 century. All British colleges and universities, including the Oxford Campus in Camelot are monitored for potential recruits. Often such recruits will be placed in the Analysis Division, at least initially but there are always those individuals who demonstrate an obvious flair for field work. Poachers turned Gamekeepers The I.I.S. as a whole is a practical beast and the Government are not shy to make use of a ready resource when it is presented to them. In this case the resource in question are those criminals, enemy agents, military deserters, terrorists or insurrectionists who, possibly after lengthy interrogation or imprisonment, are willing to exchange their loyalties and work for the Service. The knowledge and skills that these ex-enemies of the state posses can be invaluable to the I.I.S and such individuals often exchange employment with the I.I.S. for a In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 16 of 60

reduced prison term or, in some rare cases, protection from prosecution. Agents recruited in this way are constantly under surveillance, often by close colleagues in the I.I.S. and are regularly interviewed and “assessed” for any possible return to their old ways or allegiances. Up through the ranks Service in a branch of the British Home Guard or Royal Space Navy can make for a good foundation for service in the I.I.S. Individuals from branches of the military who show a desire to join the Service, or those that the I.I.S. are actively trying to recruit are usually offered positions in the BHG units attached to Field Division Team: Wellington, providing tactical support to I.I.S. operations. There they are monitored and tested to see whether they do indeed have the temperament and aptitude for work within the I.I.S. proper. Monsters to catch monsters While the British government tends to avoid the use of psions they recognise the abilities and usefulness of such individuals. Therefore the I.I.S. will actively try to recruit as many sympathetic psions as possible. To this end recruiters actively seek British citizens who have been through the Prometheus Effect, watching them for some time and performing background checks on them to identify their suitability for recruitment (and also the likelihood that they may be used as agents against Britain by a foreign power or organisation). Such th efforts are particularly focused on members of the 6 Legion stationed in their regional base in London and ISRAns who may have their homes in or near Camelot. Recruitment posters, leaflets and even obvious recruitment officers are common sites in such “target” areas.

The British Stellar Authority The British Stellar Authority or BSA was founded in the early 2030’s to take responsibility for Britain’s presence in space, replacing the British National Space Centre. While the BNSC claimed credit for the UK Space industry it had little control over budgets or partnerships, devoting most of its funds to the European Space Agency. This changed with the inception of the BSA, whose first major project was the development and foundation of the Camelot base on Luna in 2039. Since then the Authority has taken responsibility for both civil developments in space (such as the continued maintenance and management of Camelot) and the fleet of British space vessels. Should the proposed “London Bridge” beanstalk go ahead it will be the BSA who oversee its production, protection and control. The British space fleet is divided into two service arms; the Merchant Space Navy with responsibility for transporting cargo and passengers and the Royal Space Navy with responsibility to protect British interests at home and abroad, through the exercise of military effect and diplomatic activities. Military vessels are supported by Marine complements supplied by specialised divisions of the British Home Guard.

Above: The British Merchant Space Navy Ensign The Royal Space Navy Ensign Note that the design of the flags shows the BSA’s assumed responsibility for (from top L to bottom R) the UK, Luna (particularly Camelot), Earth as a whole and then the rest of the solar system and the colonies. Many consider that the Authority places their priorities very much in that order.

The Merchant Space Navy operates a variety of vessels from Bakuhatsu GPT-03s to L-B Comets and MELs. The flagship of the Royal Space Navy is the impressive L-B Novastorm cruiser; HMSS Victorious which is supported by a fleet of smaller vessels including a backbone of OE Ltd Pathfinder Patrol ships and Britain’s own I-45 “Lancelot” fighters.

Enemies of the state Corporal Morris Ngu carefully placed one armoured foot onto the floor of the derelict building. He swung his carbine round the frame of a door and peered in. Almost immediately the visual sensors located at the side of his combat helmet detected poor light and a digitally enhanced image of the building popped up on to his eyepiece. Switching between various visual options he could clearly make out the striking image of an adult and a child hiding in a room upstairs. He focussed on the graphics and allowed the imaging software to analyse the readings from the two subjects. The two targets were female, the eldest probably around 30 years of age. No obvious signs of weaponry. Carefully Morris made his way upstairs keeping his carbine in front of him. He burst into the room where the two were hiding and smashed open the wardrobe door that they had taken refuge in. The woman and the girl shrieked out in fear and began to chatter manically to each other. They held each other tightly and began to cry aloud. Morris’ vocoder quickly translated the French words that were being spoken. These two were saying goodbye to each other. A few months ago, Morris might very well have considered letting the pair of them go but after his best friend had been caught doing that very same thing, well, Morris had his own family to think about now didn’t he? Who would look after them if he was disappeared? Morris took in a deep breath. Suddenly his comm squawked into life; "Are you done in there trooper?" "Yes sir, ...terrorist...cell located, sir" "Confirm targets neutralised." Morris paused; his eyes met those of the woman. She was shielding the girl's face. "Repeat: Confirm targets neutralised." He could see the tears on her cheek. "Confirm status Trooper Ngu, do you require assistance?" "No sir." He paused, her eyes never left his and he thought he saw a spark of hope start to glimmer behind them. “Pardonnez-moi” he whispered as he raised the carbine to his shoulder and gently squeezed the trigger. The carbine gratefully whirled into life.

National adversaries While still a vocal member of the United Nations Britain maintains a polite but cool relationship with most other nations. Their only true “allies” on the international stage are Nippon and the FSA, however no one is under any misapprehension that these are nothing more than economic relationships. If the other party has nothing to gain they will be rushing to lend aid or support. There are a good number of countries that United Kingdom consider hostile, or at least worthy of close monitoring. The main focus being on their continental neighbours: in particularly France, Poland, the Germanic states and the Ukraine. The British Government remains convinced that the damaged and economically barren European continent looks upon the United Kingdom with greedy eyes and is paranoid in its attempts to protect its borders and keep tabs on its old allies. Second to the European countries in Britain’s list of hostile nations are the Sudamerican nations of Argentina and Ecuador. When the Argentinean forces invaded the Falkland Islands in 2115 Britain was in no position to retaliate and the fact stung the government to the core. The continued occupancy is a major thorn in the side of the current administration and is an issue that will come to the fore, quite possibly just before the General Election due in 2122. Ecuador has fallen under scrutiny by the British due to their emerging plans to build a rival “space bridge”. Activity on this front is under close surveillance by I.I.S. operatives with speculation that sabotage plans are being readied if progress outstrips the work being done on the London Bridge project.

Psions Due to the fact that all Psi orders are based outside Britain and therefore all psions have been influenced by, or are employed by a foreign power, the British Government considers all individuals with psionic powers to be potential security risks. The British Home Guard keeps lists of known psions and regularly performs surveillance on them, their activities and known associates. All Psions in the United Kingdom, even British nationals, can expect to be stopped and searched or even taken in for questioning on a regular basis. The British people, as whole, see the usefulness of psions, as very few could doubt the contributions that they have made to the defence of humanity and to progress in technological advancement, medical care and many other aspects of everyday life. However they would far rather that all that was done outside of Britain. There is still nagging fears amongst everyday people that psions are just going to become the “new aberrants” and end up fighting against the poor old Joe Hologram. The government in turn does little to allay these fears. nd

Psions are a part of 22 century life though and cannot be avoided. Four of the PSI orders have particular relevance to British life: Æsculapians While some Æsculapian staff work within the United Kingdom the most common view of the Docs are those selfless souls who work in the French wasteland. Most British people have nothing but respect and admiration for such individuals and give readily to such support charities, as long as the problem remains on the other side of the English Channel. The other, frequently parodied and ridiculed view of an Æsculapian is of a meddling busy body who wants to tell Britain how to run the country and how more immigrants should be let in or more investigations made into finding a cure for the French Flu. Such individuals are treated derided and insulted in person and via the local British media. ISRA The clairsentients are the order that the United Kingdom possibly tolerates the best. Arguably this is due to the close relationship enjoyed by ISRA and the Oxford campus on Luna and as a result a large proportion of British latents are triggered as Clairsentients. That said back down on Earth the ways of the “moonies” are often considered to be somewhat eccentric and open to ridicule and the idea of a “peeping Tom” psion watching you from afar is a very present stereotype back in Great Britain. The portrayal of the evil Clear voyeur, watching their victims from afar was most recently highlighted in the popular 2119 crime drama “The Watcher”. Many notable ISRAns protested against the negative portrayal a Clairsentient in the series but no legal action was taken to stop the broadcast of the show and no complaints were upheld. Norça The Norça have a strange relationship with the United Kingdom. To the man in the street they are frightening Brazilian agents who could replace your friends and family with evil duplicates and you would never know, but to the top levels of the British Government they are the source of the French Flu and thus both a necessary evil and potential “partner in crime”. The government doesn’t trust the Order and many in the Government have voiced regret over the arrangement. Yet again it is another secret that the authorities have managed to keep hidden from the general population, for now. th

6 Legion Much like the Æsculapian Order the Legions enjoy a certain amount of popular support from their record of working for the protection of humanity, likewise the British people would rather they didn’t do it in their back yard. Individuals with psychic powers can be disturbing enough to the average Brit without giving those “super-men” guns, armour, tanks and combat aircraft. Thus while the 6th Legion maintains a base in London members of the Legion are restricted to carrying non-lethal weaponry outside of the walls of their compound. In the case of an th Aberrant attack on British soil the protocol, as written, is that if the 6 Legion engage the menace first they will do so only with non-lethal weapons (i.e. tasers, webbers and sonics) until such time as the BHG can arrive to support them. This has yet to be put to the test and there are many who believe that should such an attack ever occur on British soil the Legion In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 19 of 60

will break out the heavy guns straight away and sort out the legal and social fallout after the dust settles.

Aberrants in the UK Since the return of the Aberrants in 2104 Britain has been fortunate enough to have escaped the brunt of attacks. Although lacking a significant number of Psions the obvious military presence of the Home Guard has led to any attacking Aberrants choosing the easier targets on continental Europe. That has not lessened the BHG’s alertness as units will regularly sweep urban areas on the lookout for Aberrant sympathisers. The fact that these patrols take place in areas predominantly occupied by immigrants and foreign nationals and that to date the majority of “Aberrant Cultists” arrested have been applicants for permanent citizenship has not gone unnoticed by the international media. Some analysts speculate that the British military is less of a factor than the fact that all the Aberrants could gain from an attack would be “Beer, sheep and rain”. That said rumours persist of Aberrants living in the remote highlands of Scotland with occasional tabloid headlines screaming of “Aberrant “Nessie” spotted in Loch”. Some conspiracy theorists have even aired a suspicion that the lack of attacks, coupled with such occasional “sightings” are connected and that perhaps the Government has their own Aberrant allies. To date the most reliable rumour of an Aberrant has come from London itself. There are many who believe that a mist like creature stalks the banks of the Thames, occasionally assaulting passersby or those unfortunate souls who eke out a meagre living salvaging from the waste outlet pipes and floating debris. Some believe the creature only attacks to punish its victims for some perceived slight or crime whilst many believe that the “London Fog” is a far more mundane psychopath or just simply the figment of overactive imaginations.

The New Christian Knights While Orthodox Catholicism, based on the Isle of Man, is a recognised and legal religion, only the naïve believe it to be separate from the New Christian Knights. The NCK is a terrorist organisation that has been very active against its enemies (which include the Norça, the Æon Trinity, the Ministry, the Vatican, Xigaze Buddhists, the followers of Qindo and Morning Westerly Exuberance). Most of these organisations consider the NCK to be an irritant, since they’re poorly organised and too extreme to even ally with other terrorists. However I.I.S. intelligence points to heavy financial backing and their resistance to discovery, even by telepathic agents, indicates that there is more to them than meets the eye. Some Norça investigating the NCK have even suggested that its members had formed a front organisation for Chitra Bhanu survivors. In truth no one yet knows where the NCK is getting its money or how it’s hiding from telepaths and clairsentients. Tentative connections have been made between them and the Firewalkers (another Christian terrorist group operation in continental Europe) but to date nothing has been proved.

Dragon’s Tail The Chinese Ministry of Psionic Affairs has long kept covert agents stationed in the United Kingdom but recent events have led them to launch their most ambitious covert operation on British soil, to date. Code-named “Dragon’s Tail”, it is designed to prevent the Beanstalk from being built and as yet the I.I.S. is unaware of the details but movement in the espionage community indicates that the Chinese are up to “something”. The British are prepared to play a waiting game while they attempt to gain more details while the Ministry has started to move pieces into play, tapping moles within the British Government for information and slowly bringing members of an elite psion team, the Iron Dragons, into the UK.

I.I.S. Character Creation New Player Characters follow the standard creation process as outlined in the main Trinity rulebook and Players Guide with the following additions and alterations: All characters must be of British nationality (which includes those born in British Sovereign holdings in space i.e. Camelot on Luna). As I.I.S. agents are expected to be resourceful and creative the British authorities try to recruit unique talents with a wide spectrum of experience. Therefore characters may come from very varied walks of life and such characters may have been “cross triggered” (in other words they may have a Psionic aptitude other than the one normally associated with an Order they previously belonged to). However due to the Norças practice of “keeping” all those Psions they create no I.I.S. character may begin with the Biokinesis Aptitude. Characters may still have Auxiliary Biokinesis modes. Due to the insular nature of the respective orders Telepathy and Teleportation Aptitudes are only permitted with Storyteller approval. While the setting is intended for Psions players may create a Neutral character with their Storyteller’s permission. Ability groups must be chosen from the restricted list (see below). Multiple group memberships are not permitted. All characters must follow the following rules: • "No Man is an island": Each character must have at least two points spent in any combination of Allies, Contacts or Status. • "You're in the army now, son.": Due to the set up at the start of the campaign each character must have at least one point of Status in the I.I.S or Home Guard • "We need guns, lots of guns…": A character may have multiple instances of the following Backgrounds: Clearance (with different organisations), Devices, Identity, Mentor, Requisition (with different organisations) and Status (with different organisations) • “The last suit you’ll ever wear”: Due to their Agency membership all characters begin play with Cipher and Resources but must pay full price for any further increase (e.g. Cipher would cost 5 Background points) and experience costs for the Abilities listed in the I.I.S. Field Division Ability Group are reduced to x3 Current rating rather than x4. • “A double O agent.”: Each character must take a 6 point Merit of Law Enforcement powers reflecting their “License to kill”. • The Nihonjin connection: Due to the United Kingdom’s connections with Nippon characters may have access to cutting edge “hard” technology. In character generation this is reflected in a number of ways: o Bonus point costs for Devices and Requisition Backgrounds are HALVED o Characters may freely purchase one-dot Cyberware from Asia Ascendant with either the Devices background or Resources o Characters may freely learn VARG ability by spending Bonus points without having to provide further explanation or a reason from their back story Psion Characters generate their characters as per the rules presented in the Main Rulebook with the following additional rules: • “No son of mine”: As the characters can no longer claim membership of their previous Orders they follow the Freelance Psion rules for Aptitude experience costs from page 102 of The Trinity Players Guide. Also any Ability Groups marked * below are subject to the rules concerning social skills. • “Pi$$-on”: Each character must take a 3 point Flaw of Provisional Member, reflecting the fact that Psions are not trusted within the British hierarchy. This DOES count towards the maximum of seven points of Flaws that a character may have. Neutral Characters generate their characters as per the rules presented for “heroic” neutrals in the Trinity Players Guide. Characters may be given the Psi Sink merit (paid for with Bonus In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 22 of 60

points as normal) and such individuals are highly prized and sought after by the I.I.S. Characters may also be created as Latents however it is highly unlikely that such individuals will ever be permitted to have their psi potential triggered whilst still in the employ of the I.I.S. It should be noted that Neutral agents attached to units containing Psions will often be designated as the psion’s handlers and considered superior to them, regardless of other rank or experience.

Ability Groups and Backgrounds:

The Legions The Psychokinetic Psion Order, often viewed as Earth’s first line of defence against the Aberrant threat. Currently divided into seven “Legions” of which the suitable options for Trinity: I.I.S Player Characters are as follows; •

nd

The Second – “Fortune’s Knights” – The mercenary Legion. In reality the 2 consists of a number of mercenary companies, each of which operates independently of the others but all obtain their contracts via the central Legion organisation. They are potentially a public relations nightmare waiting to happen, but the revenue they generate for the Order as a whole cannot be ignored. While no longer a member of nd the 2 it is possible that an individual with mercenary tendencies could find that the prospect of serving the UK government suits their temperament better, at least in the short term. The Third – “Support Force One” – Consisting of neutral and non-psychokinetic legionnaires, members of the third Legion handle the logistics and support duties for all six other legions. As such they are attached to other Legion units and serve in all rd possible theatres of battle. As the 3 is the designated Legion for all nonPsychokinetic Psions this can lead some individuals to resent their posting. While they may see as much front line conflict as any other Legion (in some cases far more) the fact that they are not part of a “proper” Legion can cause some legionnaires to move to pastures new The Sixth – Europe – The Legion charged with the defence of the European nations is up against it. Not only do they face the problems of a bombed out, radioactive wasteland and Aberrant breeding ground covering most of what was once France, the expansionist aspirations of Ukraine, the social degradation of the Nordic states, the isolationism of the United Kingdom, a divided Germany and a constant battle for manpower and resources, but they also have to deal with the internal strife caused by the recent loss of their commanding officer and his replacement being a young, inexperienced (although psychically gifted) civilian, with no military background. This has caused a great deal of dissention and disquiet, leading a number of seasoned and experienced Legionnaires to seek postings elsewhere, in some cases returning to their home nations, such as the UK.

Other Orders Perhaps due to national pride, the lure of good money, or their own personal reasons it is not unheard of for members of other psion orders to be recruited into Special Operations. As a matter of policy members or ex-members of The Chinese Ministry for Psionic Affairs and the Norça will not be recruited. The UK Government feel that the psions from these orders may still owe greater loyalty to their old Order than to their nation and so will “do without” rather than running the risk of recruiting and enemy agent into their midst. Ex-ISRAns and Æsculapians are generally better received, due to the more relaxed organisation, the comparative close proximity of the Camelot station to the ISRAn presence on Luna and the apparently benign motives of both organisations. Upon the return of the Teleporters to human space the government, like all other significant powers, will be clamouring to recruit any British nationals who are disaffected with the Upeo Wa Macho, of which there are likely to be some.

British Military Upon the advent of military space combat, as far back as the first Aberrant war, the British Army recognised the necessity of a specialised marine force equipped and trained for intra and extra solar conflict. While both the Royal Marine Commandos and Parachute Infantry held arguably valid claims to the role it was felt that a unique unit should be created. Volunteers were recruited from the Marines, Paras and other regular infantry units, together forming the Royal Space Regiment (Commando). These men and women are a key strike force for the British Armed Forces, wherever the United Kingdom’s interests are involved, whether on Earth, in space, on a station or a deep space colony, the “Space commandos” are ready to go at a moment’s notice. Of course members of such an experienced and elite unit are prime candidates for selection to Special Operations. The day to day home land security of the British Isles is handled by the Home Guard. A combined police and military service they are charged with the defence of the United Kingdom’s borders from threats within and without. They are the brawn that enforces the government’s will and their loyalty to the crown is considered to be without question.

Espionage and counter-espionage With the return of the Aberrants, emergence of Psions and the radically changing face of Europe within the last ten years, the British Government took steps to reorganize its intelligence gathering operations, along with the security services, to create a single, monolithic organisation. The Integrated Intelligence Service (I.I.S.), as the new unit was named, is the amalgamation of all the historic M.I. divisions, the Serious Organised Crime Agency, the Joint Intelligence Committee, Counter Terrorist Command and Special Branch. The field agents of the I.I.S. are the spooks, the spies of fiction and tales of intrigue. In their case, dealing with threats to the Crown which may include psychic powers, aliens and super powered mutants, the truth can often be far stranger than the fiction.

Campaign flavour: The predominate theme and tone of the setting is that of an espionage thriller style game, very much in the mood of an action movie or TV serial rather than an attempt at imitating real life spies. As mentioned above the concept is a British Military/Military Intelligence unit. In the Trinity background Britain is one of the most totalitarian and authoritarian states and therefore the general outside view of the team will essentially be that they are the “bad guys”. The thing is, that won’t be their own perception – they are protecting their nation from outside threats (real or perceived) - but as more is learnt about the truth of events some of the team may change their opinions which could lead to division in the team and possibly one or more operatives going “rogue”. At the very least it should provide for good role-play opportunities and stories, especially if one or more team members remain loyal to the government. For source material think Mission Impossible, Spooks (MI:5), 24, James Bond, Man from U.N.C.L.E, and the Bourne series.

Adventure seeds and rumours: Great Britain, at this point (2119 onward) has significant ties with Nippon and through that link is able to get hold of some really kick-@$$ technology (allowing them to try to build the 1 “London Bridge” beanstalk to low Earth orbit) including V.A.R.Gs (not as good as the *real* Nipponese ones or bio-V.A.R.G.s but better than America and the rest of Europe). It should also be noted that Britain has one of the few L-B Novastorm IACs (Intra system assault cruiser) space ships; HMSS Victorious, the largest class of combat spaceship currently in use in Human space. Why would a comparatively small nation like Britain have such a huge space investment, without any notable stellar colonies or holdings to protect? Shattered Europe provides details of a number of grey to black operations projects that Prime Minister Basil Gathwick and the British government have on Earth but what could they be up to in space? That question forms the basis for one of the main thrusts of the campaign.

1

Great Britain doesn’t have a large force of V.A.R.G.s (and even less bio-V.A.R.G.s due to their general anti-psion stance). Therefore any players using V.A.R.Gs will be both high profile but also under high scrutiny.

In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 26 of 60

As at 2120 there are only ten Novastorms in existence and the rest are owned by the “big players” (China owns four, UAN and Nippon own two each and the FSA and Britain have one apiece). It’s a HUGE investment in resources (probably billions of Yuan) and manpower to purchase, outfit and maintain, even before you include the fighter complement. When the only stellar holding of any significance you have is Camelot what are you going to do? Just orbit the moon above it “lookin’ ‘ard”? With Britain presented as insular and isolationist I very much doubt that they’d spend that much money patrolling space “for the benefit of mankind”. Plus why buy a ship like that when the same money could pay for a small fleet of frigates or many, many planetary naval vessels to protect their borders? One cruiser of that size is a huge and intimidating emblem of power, in addition it is versatile – the ship itself can see off most other human space vessels or can launch an orbital bombardment whilst the fighters can engage other ships or space targets. They are also most likely hybrid craft so they can enter the atmosphere to attack planetary targets, deliver troops or support ground forces. Add to this the fact that the only military vehicle of British manufacture previously mentioned is the “Hedgehog”, a mobile missile launcher (see; Hidden Agendas). Why is this interesting? The point is made that since the first Aberrant War military weapons and vehicles have been designed to take down single, powerful targets. This is a time of small unit combat, sometimes with powered individuals, sometimes in powered armour (sometimes both) with a handful of individuals fighting battles that determine the fate of nations or even worlds (see; Trinity Rulebook page 85). Why then would a nation such as Britain want to make a multi-missile launcher, the only purpose of which is to fire a lot of missiles, spreading death and destruction over a large area, rather than at specific targets? Do they fear invasion to the point of being prepared to inflict huge collateral damage on their own nation, or are they planning to get a pre-emptive strike in? If so, who do they plan to attack? It is unlikely that they would be looking to go to war directly with a nation on Earth as their targets either lack the resources to make an assault worthwhile (e.g. France) or are too powerful to engage in a direct conflict (e.g. UAN, FSA, China). This leaves either intra or extra solar colonies or holdings, and if Great Britain has no access to jump capability (as of 2119 the Upeo Wa Macho still missing and the UN and Æon 2 are hardly likely to loan them a Leviathan jump ship for an invasion attempt ) that would cut 2 Of course Great Britain may try subterfuge to obtain access to a jump ship, or they may offer to run a recontact or exploratory mission to found a new colony, but if they are not anticipating armed resistance the question remains as

In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 27 of 60

things down to targets within the Solar System. The UK will probably want to avoid the holdings of the major powers (e.g. Mars), for fear of retribution, and they would need some th form of defence from, or manner of dealing with, the 7 Legion. Alternatively they may seek to fabricate a reason for the attack (Aberrant incursion, Psion conspiracy (i.e. Huang-Marr), an attack on British holdings). The use of the London Bridge project should also be considered; if completed this beanstalk would provide direct and swift access to Low Earth Orbit, allowing swift transport of supplies 3 and personnel to waiting ships . Therefore it might be easy to envisage the UK attacking a planet or colony within the next few years of the time line. But why? Just for material resources or are there other motivating factors at play? The idea of Britain aiming to become an expansionist power again, forging a new British Empire in the stars, could well be a case of history repeating itself but perhaps factions within the British Government feel they have to do it to protect the nation, something, an individual or humanity as a whole. According to Aberrant: The Directive Britain’s trend towards isolationism began in the late 1990s. Could it be that they are acting like this to protect something very secret and important to humanity as a whole? Almost martyr-like they distance themselves from other nations to ensure that they are not also put at risk. The UK is one of the nations that founded "The Directive" during the Aberrant era. Perhaps something that was discovered then is the motivating force for Great Britain's actions in the Trinity era. Although most of the data concerning the Aberrant era was "lost" or "reconstructed" by the Æon Trinity in Project: Rewrite if anyone outside of the Trinity holds some of the truth of events there’s a good chance it'd be a top secret espionage agency, or the member nation agencies that worked with or evolved from it. Secrets are, after all, their stock in trade. One theory is that UK Agents found or worked along side an entity codenamed “Britannia” (after the Roman Goddess often used as a personification of the UK), and her influence is so overwhelming, they feel driven to begin a new glorious empire. If she exists Britannia may be a powerful Aberrant (perhaps an ex-Directive agent Nova from the early 21st century) who went into hiding during the Aberrant War and has been trying to manipulate the British Government ever since. She has fostered their isolationism to prevent her manipulations from being revealed. Britannia’s motives might be good but she may no longer be quite as sane as she once was so her methods and ethics may be somewhat skewed. There may be hope for her redemption yet, but left unchecked she could be extremely dangerous. Others suspect that “Britannia” could be a powerful ex-ISRAn Clairsentient, a waif like woman living in luxury at the top of one of the tallest towers in the London Archology. She provides prophecy for the government but is essentially a prisoner kept under house arrest. It may be a gilded cage but it’s a cage none the less. A further alternative suggestion is that “Britannia” is a document containing a detailed prophecy (akin to the “Destiny Diaries” in Marvel’s X-Men comics) or perhaps a “100 year plan” written by a mega-intelligent Nova. The document was given to Britain (via the Directive) during the Aberrant War and the events it details will soon come to fruition.

to why they would invest in a Novastorm. The other possibility is that they have access to a Nova with the ability to create Warps or a renegade Teleporter. 3 Some may question the security of a beanstalk; wouldn’t it make an easy target for an attacker? That might be true at first glance but the fact is that no human party wants another Esperanza disaster and a falling bridge could be as bad if not worse, that risk alone serves as a potent defence against attack. Of course Aberrants or hostile aliens may not be so discriminate. In His Majesty’s Service Created by Ben Rogers Page 28 of 60

Possible scenario ideas:

The Package The team are sent to Lisbon to recover a package which has been stolen from a British agent. Unbeknownst to the team the item contains details and samples of the French Flu, clearly showing that it was manufactured and implicating both the British and Norça. The item had been up for sale at an underground auction but had been won by the I.I.S. agent on the scene. However before she was able to return to Britain she was killed and the package stolen. The package has been stolen by a cell of Norça agents (who are aware of its nature and want to cover things up) but the players are initially unaware of their identity until they confront them. Added to this agents of other foreign powers (possibly the FSA, China or Ukraine) are aware of the increased activity and want to get hold of the package for their own ends, even though they may be unaware of its nature. Once the (heavily armed and well equipped) Lisbon police get involved the mission may dissolve into a chase to the border with whoever currently holds the package being pursued by a number of agents from foreign powers and the Portuguese authorities. Daniel Eitu – Fearful journalist One of the regional journalists for the Flashnews network Daniel Eitu would love to be seen as a top flight investigative journalist, reporting to all of human space about the issues that matter. Unfortunately Daniel has found himself appointed to cover the British Isles and while he sees a lot of the prejudice, human rights abuses and victimisation conducted by the authorities here he finds himself far too scared of what would happen if he actually spoke out about it. So he continues to apply his “editorial bias”, occasionally implying more than he actually says but towing the party line for fear of his own safety. Should he ever become brave enough to release them though, his personal collection of previously un-broadcast vids highlighting the reality of life in Britain would make unforgettable viewing. Mary Leung – Legal spy? The wife of British diplomat, Walter Quentin, Mary Leung came to the public eye during the notable case of Attridge v. Delafield (Trinity Field Report: PSI Laws). During the case it was revealed that Leung, a notable Chinese born London solicitor, was also a telepath. Since this revelation her case load has fallen by 25% and suspicions have been raised that she is in fact a Ministry spy. The I.I.S. now monitors her closely waiting for any sign that these suggestions are true. Leung, on the other hand, seems more concerned with rebuilding her practise and saving her marriage from the damage caused by an incessant rumour mill. Name : Series :

Political NPCs: Prime Minister Basil Gatwick – Leader of a nation, father of an Empire? Gatwick got where he is by being ruthless to his enemies. A tough, relentless son of a bitch, he never betrayed his core beliefs. He always believed England needed isolation and simplicity, and that his way was the only course that could steer Britain away from the decadence and insanity claiming the rest of Europe. Gatwick lied, he engineered scandals for his opponents, he knowingly played to the fears and false hopes of the voters – but he always felt that his actions were justified by a higher good. Operation Footlight was the next logical step, but it ended in the death of a close friend. He now wonders where good and evil truly exist in Britain.

Minister of Defence Brenda Meyer – The political soldier Brenda Meyer is a retired veteran Home Guard officer and the current Secretary of State for Defence in the British government. Meyer was drawn into politics as a further way to defend the country from the threats and dangers that she believes surround it. She is a devoted patriot and it is often thought that her exemplary military service record is what won her parliamentary seat and enabled her to attain the cabinet position she now holds. She is certainly not the most charismatic of politicians. She treats her authority over the defence of the country with the utmost seriousness. Meyer believes that efficiency and success comes from following procedure and demands that things are done by the book at all times. Although she hasn’t seen active service in over ten years she trains regularly to keep fit and to try to empathise with the Home Guard units who are essentially under her command. Whilst she is in her early forties, many mistake her for a much younger woman and are prone to underestimate her determination and forcefulness of personality. Although she no longer wears the BHG uniform she is always immaculately dressed and in black “power” suits and carries herself with the bearing of a trained and disciplined soldier. Name : Series :

David O’Grady MP – The leader of the opposition O’Grady came to the public eye in 2117 as the main political proponent for the Isle of Man’s campaign for independence. A Liberal Minister in the House of Commons he sits in opposition to the current Government. While not the leader of his party many pundits expect him to take on the role in the coming years, citing his high media profile and genuine charisma. A devoted Orthodox Catholic he considers it the duty of the government to best serve the needs of the nation’s people first, something he believes the present Government fails to do. His religious beliefs have placed him under scrutiny on more than one occasion and some speculation exists that he has ties with The New Christian Knights. In light of his outspoken views on the conduct of the BHG and the current administration O’Grady is well aware of the dangerous line he walks and has given in to calls to ensure that he has adequate personal protection. To this end he has employed a pair of bodyguards from the 2nd Legion, one of whom is with him at all times. Name : Series :

I.I.S. NPCs: Sir Milliard “Mills” Coleman – The Director Coleman has been Director of the Field Division now for six years, having worked his way up through the Service. He has been involved in espionage for all his adult life after being recruited whilst still at university. Because of his background in the field he is generally respected, if not genuinely liked, by his staff and his advice is usually taken on face value. When things are going well he could be likened to a fatherly uncle, he cares for and supports his staff and will defend them to the last, however if things turn bad he is the first to find and make an example of those responsible. His wrath is something that once experienced is never forgotten. Sir Milliard was in his post when Operation: Emerald Fence began and was fully aware of and complicit in the activities of Operation: Footlight. He considers his actions at the time as regrettable but necessary and would not hesitate to do the same again to protect the nation or its people from threat or harm. Name : Series :

Emmaline Blond – Free willed Agent Born into the luxurious life of London high society Emmaline lacked nothing, except excitement. She determined from at early age to become the sort of adventuress she’d read of in fiction and seen in vids and so actively sought out the I.I.S to petition for membership. The recruiters were keen to put off this upper class, flighty, girl but every test they set she passed and every obstacle they put before her she overcame until, begrudgingly, she was accepted into the service. Now a veteran agent she has a reputation as a flambouyant extrovert but someone who can be trusted to get the job done. She tends to operate alone as she is prone to extraordinary risks which often end up endangering the lives of those working with her. She works hard and plays hard, rumour persists that she is addicted to at least one performance enhancing substance but her reputation has so far protected her from significant investigation. However the recent loss of an eye (and her seeming lack of suitability for vitakinetic regrowth or cybernetic replacement) seems to have affected her more than may have been first thought. She is still an active agent but she no longer seems as bright and driven as she once was, and her risk taking now has a different, darker, edge to it. Name : Series :

Robin Wilde – Squad Leader The I.I.S. draw their agents from all walks of life but one of the most prolific breeding grounds is within the Home Guard itself. Soldiers and officers who show ingenuity and talent beyond the high standard normally expected in His Majesty’s Armed Forces or who demonstrate unique gifts or skills are often offered temporary secondment to the I.I.S, usually as a member of one of the Team 7: Wellington tactical support fire teams. Once they have then proved their suitability they may be offered a permanent post in the service. This was Robin’s entry into the world of espionage. Since then he has worked through the ranks and now commands a squad of Home Guard veterans within Team 7, acting as tactical support for agents in the field. Name : Series :

Adam Marshal – Hot headed Psion Adam was a Home Guard recruit until irregularities in a standard medical led to the discovery of his latency. Although showing strong vitakinetic potential as he still wanted to serve in the armed forces he pushed to be triggered as a Psychokinetic and then remained with the Legion, serving in the Sixth. Perhaps because of his bias towards vitakinesis or perhaps due to the vagaries of the Prometheus Chamber itself Adam’s triggering was quite *right*. Not only was it discovered that he had developed an auxiliary vitakinetic mode but tests showed that he was suffering from the condition known as “Mode Dysfunction”; he was completely incapable of developing any skill or ability in Cryokinesis. His unique condition left him ostracised and victimised with calls from fellow legionnaires to have his transferred to the Third Legion “Where all the non-PKs go”. He took a leave of absence and returned home to the UK, eventually bumping into one of the troopers he had started out with in the Home Guard. They met up and the trooper suggested that he had heard of psions working alongside the Home Guard in “special units”. The following day Adam went to the local BHG recruitment office and by the end of the day the Legion had received his request to muster out. Since joining I.I.S he has faced renewed ridicule and persecution but only from Neutrals, never other Psions. He feels at home with other PSI users and will look to foster friendships with any fellow Psion agents he meets. He comes across as a good natured and eager to please guy, always looking to lighten the mood with a joke or clever comment. He steadfastly believes that if he proves himself in the field he will be given the respect and treatment he deserves. Name : Series :

Geneva Cavendish – Ministry Agent (From Shattered Europe) A humble computer programmer for the British Home Guard, Cavendish is one of the few who escaped Operation Footlight. She got involved in the passport conspiracy out of sentiment: She saw first-hand the BHG’s callousness and tried to find a way to help the French. She knew normal methods (such as donations to french relief funds) would lower her credit rating, hurt her security clearance and put her under watch as a French sympathiser. A handsome government functionary, William Cross, provided a different outlet – forged passports. Desire overcame common sense; Cavendish joined the conspiracy and became lovers with Cross. Months later, Cross was one of the first against the wall when the covert death squads were mobilised. More than just Cross’ murder, it was the BHG’s agenda that turned Cavendish’s dissatisfaction into full-fledged hate. She took advantage of her ties through the BHG to meet with a Ministry agent and betray her country. The Ministry pays her well to protect its covert agents, and she gives good value for it. She isn’t certain of the group’s exact agenda, but she has strong suspicions. Thanks to Cavendish, the Ministry launched an ambitious covert operation in Great Britain. Code-named “Dragon’s Tail”, it’s designed to prevent the Beanstalk from being built. Name : Series :

Antagonist NPCs: The Iron Dragons The Iron Dragons are a notorious Ministry strike team led by Wu Chen Ha, a seasoned Ministry Agent and telepath. Wu Chen is seen by many within China as one of the shining lights of the Order. He is devoted to mother China but callous, sadistic and borderline sociopathic with it. He looks down on everyone outside the Ministry; neutrals are weak innocents to be looked after and protected, non-telepath psions are decadent wastrels, lower ranking Ministry agents are subordinates who must earn respect but his superiors are to be respected and obeyed at all times, without question. The Iron Dragons are an elite unit hand picked by Wu Chen and are very much an extension of his will. They have seen action throughout human space, from within China and Russia to Luna and Mars. I.I.S. intelligence now believes that they have entered or are on route to Britain. Name : Series :

New Christian Knights Individually poorly organised and too extreme to even ally with other terrorists, agents of the NCK are nonetheless well equipped and trained. They also seem to have the advantage of being extremely resistant to telepathic probes and clairsentient scanning. British Citizens The stereotypical resident of the London Archology is an urban socialite, they live to party and don’t care for the consequences. They consider British society outside of the archology to be backward and unsophisticated, feeling that they have far more in common with their Lunar cousins on Camelot than those a few hundred miles to the north or west. They also earnestly believe that London is the greatest city in the world and would never contemplate living outside of the borders of the UK. Name : Series :

A British citizen who lives outside of London is likely to be fair minded but very traditional in outlook. To class such people as “rural” may be a misnomer as there are large towns and cities outside of London but the residents there have more in common with those living in villages and on farms around the country than those who reside in the huge edifice that forms London.
