LEARNING VOCABULARY Here are some ideas of how you can learn new vocabulary.

What you need Make sure you have everything you need to help you learn English vocabulary. • • • •

a vocabulary notebook and pens of two or three different colours. a good learner’s dictionary – there may also be one online. A good bilingual dictionary – ask your teacher for advice. Small cards/ post-it notes can be useful. You can write words on these and stick them on furniture/ things in the classroom to help you remember words.

S DE

K

What you need to do Writing down a new word When you write a new word in your vocabulary notebook you can include some/all of the following information: • what it means • the part of speech (verb, noun, etc.) • the word in context – a phrase or a sentence that shows how it is used. • any grammatical information about the word, e.g. the different forms of an irregular verb – go, went gone, or dependent prepositions – agree with, give to. • any information about how the word is pronounced – e.g. underline the stress – important, photographer or any silent letters e.g. climb (rhymes with time). • drawings – some people find these help them remember better than definitions or translations. • other forms of the word e.g. nouns, adjectives, adverbs

GROW t bigger verb – to ge growing very quickly. is e.g. This city w, grown on: grow, gre ti a rm fo rb ve ord verb) sal / multi-w ra h (p p u w NB: gro lt come an adu uickly these days. e b to s n a e q m grow up too e.g. Children s with slow) Grow (rhyme **** pens y always hap rl a e n t USUAL a th omething adjective - s for the train to be late. al e. g. It’s usu nusual opposite – u lly ua Adverb – us sual u s s main stre sion / as in televi Z / d e c n u o n s is pro

Word families You can increase your English vocabulary with the following affixes. -er with verbs and nouns to make nouns. e.g. work  worker (someone who works) teach  teacher / drive  driver / farm  farmer

-ly with adjectives to make adverbs. e.g. usual  usually, beautiful  beautifully, nice  nicely

-ing with verbs to make nouns (activities). e.g. sail  sailing / climb  climbing / shop  shopping / read  reading

un- with many adjectives and adverbs to make negative forms. Note, sometimes you need a different prefix like im-, in- or dis-. Use your dictionary to check e.g. happy  unhappy / expensive  inexpensive / possible  impossible

Help yourself to learn words Revise regularly: you need to keep checking that you can remember the words you learnt last week or last month. It’s also easier to learn a few words at a time rather than a long list of words. So try to revise five or six words from your vocabulary notebook every day.

Organise your vocabulary notebook: Write words that are sometimes confused e.g. factory / farm

Write the opposite meanings of words e.g. beautiful, ugly / rich, poor

factory farm

Write words that have a similar spelling e.g. It’s quite noisy / It’s very quiet

Write words that have a similar meaning e.g. suitcase / luggage

Write words that have more than one meaning e.g. I like your watch / I’m watching TV

It’s very quiet. It’s quite noisy.

Finally read and listen to English as much as you can Look for words that you have learnt and see how they are used in advertisements, stories, TV programmes, websites, etc. This will help you remember them more easily and also to use them correctly. 5 Total KET SKILLS & VOCAB MAXIMISER - Blackcat © 2011 De Agostini Scuola S.p.A. - Novara

Sania Mirza – India’s Tennis Star Sania Mirza, India’s most famous woman tennis player, was born in the city of Mumbai but moved to Hyderabad soon after. Sania started playing tennis at the age of six, when her mother took her to play in the summer holidays. Sania’s mother decided she needed lessons but when Sania first met her tennis teacher he didn’t want to teach her because she was too small. Then, after about a month, he told Sania’s mother she was the best child player in the club. Sania first started playing in small tennis competitions when she was seven. But it was when she was twelve

that she had her first big success by winning the under-14 and under-16 Indian national championships. It was only after this that Sania first believed that she could be the best player in India. At this time, the most diff icult thing for Sania and her family was not how to win matches, but how to find the money to pay for her lessons, hotels, tennis rackets, etc. Tennis is not a popular sport for women in India but Sania thinks there is nothing to stop more Indian girls becoming international tennis stars like her.

1 Sania’s mother was a good tennis player. A Right B Wrong C Doesn’t say 2 Sania’s tennis teacher was very interested in her from the beginning.
