Volume 22 Number 4 December 2011 OUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: “Making It All the Same” Kenneth Wapnick, Ph.D. Introduction: A Resolution for All Years

Making It All the Same: Simplicity in Action

Most students of A Course in Miracles are familiar with the following passage that the Course’s scribe, Helen Schucman, took down at New Year’s, 1966. It is the Course’s New Year’s resolution, and so is a fit subject for our end-of-the-year newsletter:

Making it all the same, simply stated, means to perceive every situation, event, and relationship as offering the same opportunity for forgiveness. This is why Jesus repeatedly refers to his course as simple. For example:

This is the time in which a new year will soon be born from the time of Christ. I have perfect faith in you to do all that you would accomplish.… Say, then, to your brother: I give you to the Holy Spirit as part of myself. I know that you will be released, unless I want to use you to imprison myself. In the name of my freedom I choose your release, because I recognize that we will be released together. So will the year begin in joy and freedom.… Make this year different by making it all the same. And let all your relationships be made holy for you (T-15.XI. 10:1-2,4-8,11-12; bold mine).

The subject of this article, therefore, is how making it all the same releases us from the ego thought system of guilt and judgment, suffering and death, and with us all the Sonship—not only for the coming year, but for all years. What other purpose than release from pain could give meaning to our lives? How, in our right minds, could we ever think of entertaining a different goal to give significance to our daily experience? Could another New Year’s resolution—chosen each and every day, each and every minute in each day, and each and every instant that each minute holds (T-26.V.13:1)—be more important to us than learning the vision that sees us all the same, including every living and non-living thing, knowing it was the way out of hell and the road back to Heaven?

How simple is salvation! All it says is what was never true is not true now, and never will be. The impossible has not occurred, and can have no effects. And that is all (T-31.I.1:1-4).

What is not true in the world of dreams is that there is a hierarchy of illusions (T-23.II.2:3), the ego’s first law of chaos, that we are different from each other, and that our reactions should differ in terms of the differing events and situations that confront us. From the perspective of Heaven, “what was never true” is that there is a world and body outside the mind that impinge upon us, causing us to be born, live, and die—the innocent effect of the so-called natural bodily laws, not to mention the multitudinous rules and commandments for behavior that command our attention and demand our obedience. Even more to the point is that this belief in the reality of differences is no different from believing in the reality of the body: a mass of differentiating cells, organs, systems, feelings, and behaviors that scream that the impossible has occurred, witnessing to the reality and seriousness of sin. Yet the ego’s clever use of projection ensures that this sin of separating from love exists in everyone except me, a “fact” that clearly differentiates my self from others. Let us revisit the first law of chaos, the foundation of the ego’s thought system of separation, differences, judgment, and attack that inevitably leads to perceiving the world as inimical to our well being, an enemy that deserves to be assailed and even killed: The first chaotic law is that the truth is different for everyone. Like all these principles, this one maintains

Our New Year’s Resolution (continued) However, escape is not only possible but inevitable when we understand:

that each is separate and has a different set of thoughts that set him off from others. This principle evolves from the belief there is a hierarchy of illusions; some are more valuable and therefore true. Each one establishes this for himself, and makes it true by his attack on what another values. And this is justified because the values differ, and those who hold them seem to be unlike, and therefore enemies (T-23.II.2).

The world you see is what you gave it, nothing more than that.… It is the witness to your state of mind, the outside picture of an inward condition (T-21.in.1:2,5).

Understanding projection, the prerequisite for Christ’s vision of the sameness of God’s Son, salvation is assured. Choosing vision over judgment, we can no longer make others responsible for our pain or joy. Remembering that nothing exists outside the projecting mind, we know that everything comes from decisions the mind makes. These decisions are generated from the basic choice between the ego and God. We shall return to this simple choice below. Jesus’ function is to teach us to recognize the ego dynamic of seeing without what is really within. Doing so allows the gates of Heaven to open wide in welcome, as our journey home takes on a sense of urgency, accelerating our learning to take with us all our brothers and sisters, now perceived as the same. Readers of The Lighthouse may recall from earlier articles Helen’s experience on an Atlantic City boardwalk, recounted in her unpublished (and unfortunately inaccurate) autobiography and in a letter to William Thetford. It is one of several that she had:

Given our belief in this insane law, how could we ever attain, let alone share Christ’s vision that sees everyone as the same? Our existence as a species and as individuals within that species (our focus being only on homo sapiens, one form of the separated Son) rests on the thought that differences are the truth, and oneness (and therefore sameness) the illusion. Since the belief in differences became real in our minds when we labeled it sin, and since everything that has happened within the world of time and space came from that unholy instant when the tiny, mad idea of separation from our Source was taken seriously, it logically follows that at the core of every perception of differences lies the firm conviction in sin’s reality. To digress briefly, we are not speaking of our differentiating sensory perceptions that come from the body’s eyes, but only from the mind’s interpretations of these perceptions (see, e.g., T-3.III.2:3; M-17:4-12). Our interpretation of the sensory data, brought by our sensory organs to the brain, is solely instigated by the mind. This must be the case because the body is not external to the mind, but exists only within it. As Jesus continually emphasizes, ideas leave not their source: the thought of separation and sin has never left its source in the split mind, meaning there is no material universe outside us (W-pI.132.5). But once we project the mind’s interpretation of differences and sin beyond this mind onto the world, we conveniently forget we have done so. In that way, our projection becomes our perception (T-21.in.1:1), and because we think we see it outside us, we actually believe our projected interpretations of sin onto others are true. Returning to our discussion of sin as the foundational thought behind the perception of differences, we can understand how our perceived sin is seen in another, leaving us as sinless victims of another’s vicious and unjustified aggression. There is no way out of this vicious circle of sin and attack unless we begin to question the validity of our perceptions that another can be sinful and we sinless, that God’s one Son can be fragmented into very real and differentiated parts. As we read from the manual:

One took place on a warm evening when Louis [Helen’s husband] and I were walking along a crowded resort boardwalk. A sudden sense of deep emotional closeness to everyone there swept over me, with a clear and certain recognition that we were all making the same journey together to a common goal.… As we walked I suddenly…got a sense of everyone walking happily and very much together on the same path.…we’ll all make it home eventually. Sometimes I love everybody very much (Absence from Felicity, pp. 115, 140; italics omitted).

We must include everyone in our forgiveness and healing—without exception—for we are one. The wholeness of God’s Son is God’s Son, and since this is his reality, to deny his oneness is to make what is natural, unnatural. What could this be but the ego’s insane attempts to defy the Authority of God? It was this defiance that gave us life originally, breathing illusion into our most uncertain existence, and compelling us to see differences where there is only sameness, the unnatural state of separation instead of the inherent unity of mind and rightminded purpose. For this reason, Jesus exhorts us to “cast no one out” of the circle of Atonement, the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. If we do, we but exclude ourselves.

Now is escape impossible, until you see you have responded to your own interpretation, which you have projected on an outside world (M-17.9:8).

Each one you see you place within the holy circle of Atonement or leave outside.… If you bring him into the circle of purity, you will rest there with him. If you

2

Our New Year’s Resolution (continued) ordering is wrong, but that a better way is offered you. The miracle offers exactly the same response to every call for help. It does not judge the call. It merely recognizes what it is, and answers accordingly. It does not consider which call is louder or greater or more important.… There is no order of difficulty here.… The only judgment involved is the Holy Spirit’s one division into two categories; one of love, and the other the call for love (T-14.X.6:1-6,14; 7:1).

leave him without, you join him there.… Cast no one out, for here is what he seeks along with you. Come, let us join him in the holy place of peace which is for all of us, united as one within the Cause of peace (T-14.V. 11:1-3,8-9).

To be sure, we differ in body, physically and psychologically, and these differences can be very convincing, but only to our sensory organs and brains. In truth, our split minds remain the same: ego, Holy Spirit, and the power to choose between them. How simple, then, is salvation! We choose damnation or salvation, sin or holiness. With Jesus as our teacher, we learn to recognize this sameness in all things, both true and illusory: Every illusion is the same, emanating from the simple illusory source of having believed in the reality of sin. Every correction is the same, because each results from recognizing there “is no order of difficulty in miracles [or correction]” and that the ego’s first law of chaos is untrue. Here is Jesus’ correcting response to the ego’s first law of chaos:

This judgment of the Holy Spirit (see also T-12.I) relieves us of the burdensome need to judge our world, and then choose appropriate reactions to it. We meet everyone in the same way, with an openness of heart and mind that frees us from the prison house of hate. This allows us to return to the source of all worldly things and experiences: the mind that chooses between judgment and vision, sleeping and awakening. What, then, could be simpler than to ask one simple question of absolutely everything that befalls us throughout our lives: Does this impede or contribute to my goal of awakening from the ego’s dream of separation? How can this be difficult if our goal is to awaken? We are not asked to be ego free, but simply to ask the question, thus beginning the process of undoing our investment in the ego’s projections of responsibility onto others instead of ourselves. Imagine how meaningful our lives would become if this question were uppermost in our minds as we walked through each day! The seemingly disparate events, relationships, situations and our responses to them would be unified in this single question, thereby making it all the same. We are indeed on “a journey without distance to a goal that has never changed” (T-8.VI.9:7). This unchanging goal of awakening from the ego’s nightmare renders all things in our dreaming lives as one, bringing them together in a meaningful whole. In the end, what could really matter to us but our salvation from hell? And what else can deliver us from the ego’s cruel fate but a simple question, asked with sincerity of purpose: Does this impede or contribute to my goal of awakening from the ego’s dream of separation? Is there anything else here to consider, want, and work to achieve? The answer to this simple question is reflected in our perceptions of our special partners in hate and love. Do we see them as instruments of imprisonment—theirs and ours—or as partners in the freedom that is the salvation we achieve together, or not at all (T-19.IV-D.12:8)?

If it were realized that they [illusions] are all the same and equally untrue, it would be easy, then, to understand that miracles apply to all of them. Errors of any kind can be corrected because they are untrue.… No part of nothing can be more resistant to the truth than can another (T-23.II.3:3-4,6).

The belief in sin (the judgment of differences) and its undoing through the miracle (the vision of sameness) are succinctly stated in the following passage: The laws of sin [or chaos] have different witnesses with different strengths. And they attest to different sufferings. Yet to the One Who sends forth miracles to bless the world, a tiny stab of pain, a little worldly pleasure, and the throes of death itself are but a single sound; a call for healing, and a plaintive cry for help within a world of misery. It is their sameness that the miracle attests.… The laws that call them different are dissolved, and shown as powerless (T-27.VI.6:4-7,9; italics mine).

How simple, then, is salvation! And how simple is the Holy Spirit’s kind prescription for our responses to all interactions, regardless of their seeming complexity or “factual” perceptions that justify our ordering these perceptions into two categories—sin and innocence, with complex, differentiating gradations within the two. His healing judgment is the end of the ego’s tyrannical rule of judgments based on the perception of differences:

Imprisonment or Freedom, Sleeping or Waking

It will seem difficult for you to learn that you have no basis at all for ordering your thoughts. This lesson the Holy Spirit teaches by giving you the shining examples of miracles to show you that your way of

To help us remember the above question that would unify our lives and provide genuine meaning to them,

3

Our New Year’s Resolution (continued) consider this passage from the end of Chapter 27. It provides added depth to our question and its simplicity:

can be understood that there is no order of difficulty in healing (P-3.II.6:1; 7:1).

For you would not react at all to figures in a dream you knew that you were dreaming. Let them be as hateful [or happy] and as vicious [or kind] as they may, they could have no effect on you unless you failed to recognize it is your dream (T-27.VIII.10:5-6).

In the manual for teachers, discussing the sameness of teacher and student, Jesus makes the same point: The demarcations they have drawn between…the differences they thought separated them from one another, fade and…disappear. Those who would learn the same course share one interest and one goal. And thus he who was the learner becomes a teacher of God himself, for he has made the one decision that gave his teacher to him. He has seen in another person the same interests as his own (M-2.5:6-9; my italics).

All dream figures are the same because they have no effect on our dreaming lives, unless we give them that power to make us happy or sad, peaceful or angry. This is why there is no order of difficulty in miracles. One is not “harder” or “bigger” than another. They are all the same. All expressions of love are maximal (T-1.I.1).

We can expand that understanding of the inherent sameness of therapist and patient, teacher and pupil, to all relationships. We are, in truth, alike in sharing the shared interest of awakening from the hellish dream of separation and death. As Jesus tells us in “I will be still an instant and go home,” the workbook lesson that begins with a description of the alienation that all experience who come here: “No one but knows whereof we speak” (W-pI.182.2:1). There is not a person who deep within the mind does not experience the pain of existence, yearning for surcease from a suffering that seems endless and without purpose. In desperation we cry out for help, yet we hear nothing but the ego’s call to attack, the maladaptive attempt to gain relief from guilt. Our fear of love is so great that we never know that through attack and judgment we merely reinforce the very guilt we are attempting to defend against (“…defenses do what they would defend” [T-17.IV.7:1]). This leaves us all—victim and victimizer alike—imprisoned in the ego’s entombed sanctuary of sin. To see everyone as the same is nothing less than understanding that attack is never justified (e.g., T-6.in.1; T-30.VI.1-2), judgment impossible, and peace our only true emotion. It also means that no one and nothing can ever harm us, for what is oppositional when seen through Christ’s vision of sameness? Kindness is inevitable, and is the only joyful response to the world, regardless of what seems to happen. Recall that nothing is happening outside us, and once we return to the awareness that mind is the only player in the ego’s game of separation, we will know that this mind is a decision-making instrument. Thus we always have the ability to choose peace and joy over imprisonment and pain. This means that everything we do, think, and feel is blessed with the holiness of God’s blessed Son of Wholeness. Happily, then, we walk the earth in holy relationship with everyone and everything, as Heaven looks down on our joyous faces, smiling in gratitude that its Son has been returned to it:

The dreams of others affect us only when we choose to make ourselves part of their dreams of separation, suffering, and attack. Understanding this makes us responsible, not for the egos of others, to be sure, but for our reactions to their egos. These come from the mind’s decision to identify with the ego’s thought system of separation, suffering, and attack. In this sense, the other person is irrelevant to our reactions and feelings. Does this impede or contribute to my goal of awakening from the ego’s dream of separation? This questioning thought, faithfully asked, will surely take us home, for it can never fail to return our attention to the decisionmaking split mind that is the same for everyone. It shifts our focus from the differentiated and differentiating world of bodies, the home of all special relationships, to its source. We are not held captive by the body’s “engine of destruction” (T-20.VIII.4:8) or its “rotting prison” (T-26. I.8:3), but only by the mind’s having chosen the wrong teacher, the voice of differences rather than sameness. The decision for the right-minded teacher of sameness is the decision for vision over judgment, reflecting our wish to learn and then share the Holy Spirit’s true perception. It means our forswearing the ego’s thought system that is held in place by our belief that attack thoughts are justified, that the judgments of others as sinful are deserved. Yet, our new teacher instructs us that attack is impossible when we recognize our inherent sameness with the Sonship, and that judgment is merely a defense against returning home to our oneness. It is a shibboleth of psychotherapy that you cannot judge whom you understand. All therapists should hold in their awareness these parallel lines from Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process and Practice. This was a pamphlet scribed by Helen after she completed her scribing of A Course in Miracles: It is in the instant that the therapist forgets to judge the patient that healing occurs.… Yet it is when judgment ceases that healing occurs, because only then it

The incomplete is made complete again, and Heaven’s joy has been increased because what is its own has

4

Our New Year’s Resolution (continued) not be completed without first sharing this perception of sameness. This alone heals the belief in separation that keeps us asleep and forgetting we are at home in God, dreaming of exile (T-10.I.2:1). In an earlier Lighthouse article (June 2011) I wrote of the great benefit in developing a relationship with the Beloved, symbolized in A Course in Miracles by Jesus and the Holy Spirit. This is the only relationship in the world of illusion that gives meaning to our lives, for it reflects our only real relationship with the Creator (T-15.VIII). The mind’s decision to call upon our love for Jesus or the Holy Spirit (or any other meaningful non-ego symbol)— the irresistible attraction of love for love (T-12.VIII. 7:10)—is the decision for the constancy of sameness in all our perceptions. This consistent perception, which does not recognize as significant the perceived differences of the world’s sensory data, demonstrates the truth of the workbook lesson “When I am healed I am not healed alone” (W-pI.137). Moreover, as we are all the same, to forgive one is to forgive all. We are imprisoned or released as one, for separation is the lie and unity the truth. Our task is solely to forgive the person in front of us—mentally or physically. The extension of our forgiveness to the Sonship as a whole “automatically” happens, the joyous role of the Holy Spirit Who is our right mind:

been restored to it.… No one on earth but offers thanks to one who has restored his home, and sheltered him from bitter winter and the freezing cold. And shall the Lord of Heaven and His Son give less in gratitude for so much more? (T-26.IX.4:5; 7:3-4)

Yet not only is Heaven grateful for our healed perception, so is every seemingly separated fragment of God’s perfect Son. No longer seen as different and sinful, we all share equally in the vision of the Son’s inherent sameness and innocence. As we read: Think what a holy relationship can teach! Here is belief in differences undone. Here is the faith in differences shifted to sameness. And here is sight of differences transformed to vision.… And now the sameness that you saw extends and finally removes all sense of differences, so that the sameness that lies beneath them all becomes apparent (T-22.in.4:1-4,8; italics mine).

This sameness then, is the only truth within the world of illusion, taught to us by the Teacher of truth: What teaches you that you cannot separate denies the ego. Let truth decide if you and your brother be different or the same, and teach you which is true (T-22.VI. 15:6-7; italics mine).

Jesus later summarizes the healing process of bringing illusion to the truth: “What is the same can not be different, and what is one can not have separate parts” (T-25. I.7:7). What can be simpler? Who among us could not, with Jesus by his side, fail to choose the path of sameness that leads to the Oneness that created us one with Itself? God’s Sons are equal to each other, for they share not only the same mind but the same goal: a unity of self and purpose. Recognizing this shared purpose undoes the belief in differences that was the foundation of sin. The vision of sameness becomes the radiant means of salvation, leading us out of the darkness of sin into the light of Heaven’s love:

Leave, then, the transfer of your learning to the One Who really understands its laws, and Who will guarantee that they remain unviolated and unlimited.… Your brother first among them will be seen, but thousands stand behind him, and beyond each one of them there are a thousand more (T-27.V.10:1,4).

The first chapter of The Song of Prayer concludes with the section “The Ladder Ends.” It is reminiscent of our New Year’s prayer, where Jesus would have us say to our brother: I give you to the Holy Spirit as part of myself. It expresses the completion of our journey from the differentiated world of sin, through the all-inclusive vision of innocence, to the remembrance of the oneness of creation:

You and your brother are the same, as God Himself is One and not divided in His Will. And you must have one purpose, since He gave the same to both of you.… To you and your brother is given the power of salvation, that escape from darkness into light be yours to share; that you may see as one what never has been separate, nor apart from all God’s Love as given equally (T-25.II.11:1-2,5; italics mine).

Now prayer is lifted from the world of things, of bodies…and you can rest in holiness at last.… Now can you say to everyone…: I cannot go without you, for you are a part of me…(S-1.V.3:1, 8-9; italics omitted).

It is instructive to note how Jesus brings to a joyous conclusion the journey through the four obstacles to peace (T-19.IV), a metaphor for his leading us up the ladder separation led us down (T-28.III.1:2). Rather than dwell upon the Oneness that will be restored to our awareness when we “disappear into the Presence beyond the veil, not to be lost but found; not to be seen but known” (T-19.IV-D.19:1),

Being with Our Teacher: From Sameness to Oneness A significant part of forgiveness and healing is having a relationship with our inner Teacher (Jesus or the Holy Spirit). It is His single-minded perception—love or calls for love (T-14.X.7:1)—that makes it possible for us to see everyone as the same. Indeed, the journey to oneness can5

Our New Year’s Resolution (continued) separation and fragmentation, to the knowledge of oneness that allows us to pass through Heaven’s open gates, and all our brothers with us. The vision of the innocent face of God’s Son gently yields to the reality of His perfect Oneness. As we are released to the full awareness of Christ, as Christ, for Christ, the Sonship is released as one. The time of Christ softly dissolves into His Home, where Creator and created are one undifferentiated One, the happy fact of creation. The love reflected here is free to be its perfect Self, for the reflected and what was reflected have become the Oneness of Heaven’s Holiness:

Jesus makes the total forgiveness of our brothers the central theme of his discussion of passing through the final veil. This is impossible, however, as long as we see them as our enemies in crucifixion, not friends in redemption. Sharing the Holy Spirit’s healing vision with this savior, as alike to us as we are to Christ, we cannot be without our Friend’s love beside us. And so Jesus says to us, in words written at Eastertime and reflecting the inherent sameness of God’s Sons, which includes our elder brother: It is almost Easter, the time of resurrection. Let us give redemption to each other and share in it, that we may rise as one in resurrection, not separate in death.… Free [him] here, as I freed you. Give him the selfsame gift, nor look upon him with condemnation of any kind.… So will we prepare together the way unto the resurrection of God’s Son, and let him rise again to glad remembrance of his Father, Who knows no sin, no death, but only life eternal (T-19.IV-D.17:4-5; 18:1-2,5).

Those who have learned to offer only healing, because of the reflection of holiness in them, are ready at last for Heaven. There, holiness is not a reflection, but rather the actual condition [Oneness] of what was but reflected to them here [sameness]. God is no image, and His creations, as part of Him, hold Him in them in truth. They do not merely reflect truth, for they are truth (T-14.IX.8:4-7).

Thus are we born again as Christ, shifting from the perception of sameness that heals and undoes the belief in *

HEALING THE UNHEALED MIND The central theme of this book is body and mind, which can be restated as form and content, a key theme in A Course in Miracles. In the context of this book, we see the ego’s ingenuity in having us focus on the external symptoms of sickness, their amelioration then seen as healing. True healing comes only when we let the true Healer return our attention to the mind’s symptom of guilt, whereby our unhealed minds are cleansed of the erroneous belief in guilt’s reality. Our recognizing that sickness and healing are only of the mind is one of the Course’s major purposes, for it is the basis of forgiveness. It is the purpose of this book to help further students’ understanding of this process, which is a significant part of the healing journey we take with Jesus. Available December 1, 2011

ACADEMY CLASSES Faculty: Kenneth Wapnick, Rosemarie LoSasso, Loral Reeves, and Jeffrey Seibert Times: 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. A-1 A-1D1

THE TROJAN HORSE OF SPECIALNESS Dates: January 8 – 10 Fee: $100.00 for entire program; $40.00 for each individual day. January 8 Fee: $40.00 A-1D2 January 9 Fee: $40.00 A-1D3 January 10

Fee: $40.00

Using as a theme the famous ploy of the ancient Greeks to defeat Troy after ten long years of battle, the class will focus on the deceits of specialness. The ego’s lies lull the unsuspecting into a false sense of security, only for them to discover to their horror and dismay that they have welcomed into their lives the enemy, whose only goal is to destroy them. And so we can paraphrase the warning: “Beware of egos bearing gifts.” The classes will contrast the ego’s gifts of guilt and pain, masquerading as love, with Jesus’ true gifts of forgiveness and healing.

A-2 A-2D1

THE JUSTICE OF HEAVEN Dates: February 12 – 14 Fee: $100.00 for entire program; $40.00 for each individual day. February 12 Fee: $40.00 A-2D2 February 13 Fee: $40.00 A-2D3 February 14

Fee: $40.00

What passes for judgment on earth is sins being punished, exemplifying the cornerstone of the ego’s thought system: one or the other. The Holy Spirit’s correction is together, or not at all (T-19.IV-D.12:8), the rock on which salvation rests: No one can lose for anyone to gain (T-25.VII.12:1). Sharing His vision, we perceive the universal sameness in God’s Son, as we all have the same tripartite mind: ego, Holy Spirit, decision maker. This true perception is the basis for true justice, in which all God’s Sons receive their just deserts of gentle correction and kind forgiveness.

5-DAY ACADEMY 3 PROGRAM IS CLOSED. WALK-IN REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. A-3

“THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING” (Dates: March 12 – 16)

A-4 “WHO IS UNWELCOME TO THE KIND IN HEART?” A-4D1

Dates: June 10 – 12 Fee: $100.00 for entire program; $40.00 for each individual day. June 10 Fee: $40.00 A-4D2 June 11 Fee: $40.00 A-4D3 June 12

Fee: $40.00

We read in the text that “Love waits on welcome, not on time” (T-13.VII.9:7). This means that at any instant we can choose to be wholly loving to all people, regardless of the situation. Yet we need the little steps of forgiveness before our fear of love diminishes sufficiently to allow the inherent love of God’s Son to be accepted and then extended through us. The daily practice of kindness is what enables us to welcome into the kingdom of our heart all those who wander “in the world uncertain, lonely, and in constant fear” (T-31.VIII.7:1). After all, who can be unwelcome to those who are kind in heart? (T-31.VI.6:9)

ALL Academy 5 classes will be taught by Kenneth Wapnick PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED. WALK-IN REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. A-5

WHEN VIRTUE IS A VICE, AND VICE A VIRTUE: TWO PURPOSES FOR EVERYTHING

R EGISTRATION ENDS WHEN CLASS FILLS . WALK -IN REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED . Dates: August 20 – 24 Fee: $175.00 for entire program; $40.00 for each individual day. A-5D1 August 20 Fee: $40.00 A-5D2 August 21 Fee: $40.00 A-5D3 August 22 A-5D4 August 23 Fee: $40.00 A-5D5 August 24 Fee: $40.00

Fee: $40.00

Friar Laurence’s speech in Romeo and Juliet on the right- and wrong-minded use of herbs and plants is the framework for this class on changing our focus from the forms of our behaviors to their content, asking the question of everything in our lives: Does what I think, feel, say, or do express the purpose of furthering my path of Atonement or hindering it? It is the purpose of our actions that provides their meaning, and recognizing this truth reflects the shift in awareness from ourselves as bodies to decision-making minds, with the power to choose the vice of guilt and judgment or the virtue of forgiveness and healing.
