41837526 CHAPTER 4 1 - 7 – The ghost used oil on his chains because he didn’t want anymore to hear him. 2 - 9 – One night the twins put butter on the top stair, which made the ghost fall down the stairs to the bottom. 3 - 6 – When the gost went into the twins’ room, a jug of water fell down on him and he got very wet.

4 - 10 – The ghost went down just to look at the bloodstain, but the twins and Washington were waiting for him. 5 - 8 – The gost planned to do the Horseman of Death, but in the end was too frightened to leave his room. CHAPTER 5 1. Why did Virginia go up the back stairs ? Because she wanted to change her skirt before anyone see the hole in it. 2. What eas the ghost doing when Virginia saw him? He was sitting near the window, watching the leaves dan cing in the wind. 3. Who locked Sir Simon in a room without food or water ? His wife brothers. 4. Why was Viriginia so angry about the bloodstain? Because the ghost used her paints to make it, and only left her dark blue and white. 5. Who didn’t want to go to America ? The ghost. 6. What couldn’t the ghost do ? He couldn’t sleep. 7. Where did the ghost want to go ? He wanted to go to the Garden of Death. 8. What two things could Virginia do for the ghost? She could pray and cry for him. 9. Where did the ghost go with Virginia ? Into a great black hole in the wall. CHAPTER 6

2; 5; 6; 8; 9 ACTIVITIES – AFTER READING ACTIVITY 1 1. Butter The ghost has just fallen down the stairs. Because the butter that the twins put on the top stair, his feet went from under him and he went crashing down the bottom. 2. Paint

The ghost has just found out that Washington has cleaned the bloodstain off the library floor. He finds Virginia’s paint box and decides to make the bloodstain again using the red paints. 3. Medicine The ghost has just hurried up the stairs, getting away from the Otis men, who came out when he fell to the floor with the armour. Then he gives his famous horrible laugh, and Mrs Otis comes out of the bedroom to give him some medicine because she thinks he has a pain in his stomach. 4. Oil This is the first meeting between the ghost and the Otis family. The ghost is walking past Mr Otis’s bedroom, making a lot of noise with a bottle of Tammany’s Sun Oil, wich he tells the ghost to pu on his chains. 5. Turnip The ghost has just been back to look at the second ghost again, very early in the morning. When he puts his arms round the ghost, its head falls off, and then he understands that the ghost is not real and is just another trick by the Otis family.
